14.5 hours! And then, SHOW!

Although in my case DH has a meeting and won't be home until a little after nine so I may be watching it on a smidge of delay. Better make sure the DVR is recording!

I'm relatively spoiler-free, and I don't want to be tempted to look today, so do me a favour?

Rec me things you've really enjoyed this summer - specifically, one or two things you did - meta, fic, vid, icons, squee are all fantastic and any genre/type is fine - and one or two things you particularly loved.

There was so much fantastic fic this summer, so much amazing art, so many clever vids and wow the icon-creation was stellar! SO obvioudly, it's hard to narrow it down, but here's two things I've re-read (and I'm leaving out [livejournal.com profile] poisontaster's Kept Boy WiP as it isn't finished yet and thus isn't technically a hiatus-creation, and setting aside [livejournal.com profile] veronamay's BigBang, Better Elsewhere, since I was semi-involved with the process):

A Loaded God Complex from [livejournal.com profile] spn_summergen by [livejournal.com profile] gwendolyngrace, wherein the demon-worshipping cult that John has been tracking chooses Sam’s Middle School as their target. But John doesn’t know that there’s already another investigator on the case. Medium crossover (but pre-series, so not necessary to know anything about Medium).

Into HIs Hand by [livejournal.com profile] drvsilla. Yes, this is the J2 AU set in the rodeo world. I read it on an airplane in June, and it kept me enthralled all the way through, which was utterly unexpected. I had no interest in rodeos and was completely unfamiliar with the world, but this story is just mind-grabbing and heart-aching and intense.

Did I just cheat and put four fics in? : blushes :

When I got my iPhone earlier this summer, I loaded all the vids I've ever made onto it - sometimes, you just want to watch something familiar - and out of everything in every fandom that I made this summer, the one I've watched most is Always Be Closing Night, my encapsulation of the finale of Dean's Deal, set to Intermission by the Scissor Sisters. I watched it again this morning, to get keyed up for S4 OMGOMGOMGSQUEE tonight and I'm still happy with the way it came out, which isn't always how I feel about my vids four months after the fact.

Speaking of "after the fact", [livejournal.com profile] deirdre_c knows that I was having issues as to whether my Pina Colada was SPN or J2; when I finished it back in July I was sure that it was SPN crack, but now I am thinking that it's more of a J2 story that just happens to use SPN clips. WIBBLE, I DO NOT KNOW! Maybe I should make a poll...

Meep, kids are up! And SHOW is soooooooooon.

So please, tell me what you especially liked during this hiatus, so I don't go off onto TWoP or the CW forum or that new SPN Spoilers comm and hunt S4 spoilers with a salt-loaded shotfun?

ETA: Speaking of SPN - HEEEEEEEE! )

Yay! The fic that [eventually insert name here] wrote for me in [livejournal.com profile] spn_summergen is up here and it is FANTASTIC. Dean is a lifeguard, but his most important job is looking after Sam.

Wonderful case-fic with terrific brotherly moments! I am asquee with adoration for it and can't wait to thank the author personally!
heidi: (Eloise)
[livejournal.com profile] catharsis_o_s created a pair of wonderful - spoilery for DW 4.12! - icons for me - you can find them here.

AND! AND! AND!!!!!!!!!

The Sabrina-inspired J2 fic I requested from [livejournal.com profile] balefully is now up! I'm only in the middle of part one now, but it's so fantastic I had to rec it because it's just perfect. Balefully's summary behind the cut )

And as I wait for DW to finish and get online, I'm watching the kids play the wii, and realised that what I really want is a DW game for the wii. My dream game would let you be any Doctor or Companion or Bad Guy - if you're a Doctor, you can choose any companion you want - and it would have every location and character from the old and new series - or at least, every major one - and your wii-mote's nunchuck would be a sonic screwdriver and the easter egg would be the SNOG option.

One thing I've picked up in vidding over the last year or so is that inspiration comes from the oddest places. I'd been sorting through my itunes, looking for songs about doom and tragedy and loss, and I remembered to songs that have extremely perky, fun tunes - but which are angsty in their lyrical cores. One is "Hell" from the Squirrel Nut Zippers, and the other is "Intermission" from the Scissor Sisters. It's disarming and charming, because you spend most of the song humming along with the catchiness and then, it just hits you, full throttle in the stomach.

So, I vidded to it.

Title: There'll Always Be Closing Night

Song:
Intermission

Artist:
Scissor Sisters

Rating:
PG-13 for violence

Characters:
Winchesters and demons, mostly

Spoilers:
Supernatural Season Three through 3.16. In other words, do not watch this until you have seen the Season Three finale.

Summary: goes behind a cut! )

Download the QuickTime version on MegaUpload or watch it on YouTube or ( + at the fake-cut. )

Just what every fangirl needs, new from Virgin Mobile: the Samsung SLASH mobile phone

What's on your SLASH phone?

And now, for your regularly scheduled programming, two recs:
[livejournal.com profile] ash48's Changing Channels, which shifts the prism of other shows onto SPN - I have a particular love for the "Friends" portion.

[livejournal.com profile] giandujakiss's Hourglass (set to the Squeeze song from 1988) which incorporates, does meta for and loves on SPN, X-Files, Xena, Buffy, Medium, Early Edition, Lois & Clark, Stargate SG-1, Day Break, ST: TNG and more. This is what a multifandom vid should be like - funny, gorgeous, smart and savvy.
heidi: (Dreamer)
Fic Recs of the Day:
Two SPN crossovers - one is crack and one is simply funny.
Not the Music in Me - a bodyswap-crossover between SPN and High School Musical from [livejournal.com profile] rionaleonhart. It is quite fabulous!
Attack of the Five Foot Ten Woman by [livejournal.com profile] musesfool - it's a SportsNight/SPN crossover that is perfectly voiced, wonderfully characterized and amazingly plotted. Six steps beyond Thespis, you'll find... Winchesters at CSS.

Finally finished my Sam's Birthday vid, which I'll be posting on Friday. OMG this was hellish to render - something was glitching in the last half of the vid, and I ended up having to cut and paste said half into a new file, and then splice the two together. At least I didn't have to tweak with the timing, like I did with Badlands earlier this month. Why can't the tech side of vidding be easy?

The good thing is, in going through all the eps of SPN, I found the image I used in this icon. It's about one fifth of a second in the car towards the start of 1.02, and unless you watch frame-by-frame you'll miss it. Yes, the TV Guide images are lovely, but I like my little Sleepy Sammy icon, too.

Perhaps because I'm damned tired right now and still have to finish cleaning up the playroom because someone thought it was a good idea to get my son the LEGO Mosaic for his birthday. Two hundred single-sized lego bricks. On the floor. I just want to vacuum them up. But I won't.

I'm traveling this week, and in packing my carry-on, I realised that every year, for the last few years, I seem to add an additional piece of technology to my satchel. I've been carrying a camera on trips since I was about six, and I got my first walkman before I went to camp at 11. I added a laptop in 1992, a cellphone circa 1993, a Newton in 1994 (but I stopped carrying it the following year), a digital camera in 1999, an MP3 player in 2000 or 2001 (I had a Rio Riot - it was huge, and held I think 20 GB of content, which was a lot back then), a digital video camera in 2003, an ipod in 2004 and now, my GPS is coming on the road with us, which will help us get around on the backroads of NY State.

And everything needs its own charging cable.

My tech takes up a carry on bag; my cosmetics fill a quart-sized plastic bag.

In 1992, or 1997, or even 2001, it was quite the opposite.

TheWB is relaunching as a website. )

Will do a vidding-and-fics-I-posted-this-month wrapup post from the road tomorrow, including yesterday's Schoolhouse Rock Parody, Unpack Your Adjectives...
ETA: BBCAmerica shows are now on iTunes, including Torchwood. Only one ep of Robin Hood up so far...
heidi: (Heat)
I am one of the Guest Reccers for [livejournal.com profile] spnroundtable this month, and I just posted my first list of recs here - crossovers ahoy! (Big surprise there, right?) Read, comment, and if you have a favorite crossover that's set in an AU to SPN, let me know about it!

I also have a Jensen Ackles Birthday Vid, sort of. It's another in my Schoolhouse Rock series - the song I used this time is Body Machine, and most of the clips were chosen for prettiness.

Title: The High Powered, Revved Up Body Machine

Song originally from: Schoolhouse Rock

Fandom: Supernatural

Rating: PG

Summary: Dean Winchester would like to tell you about The Body Machine, with some help from his brother, Sam, and his clone, Alec. Created for Jensen Ackles' 30th birthday. Gen - sort of a picspam in vid form.

Spoilers: Visual spoilers for Dark Angel S2 and Supernatural S1, S2 and S3 through 3.12.

Genre: Parody, prettiness

Hope you like it! Reviews are like candied apples - shiny, bright and delicious!

( + Follow the fake cut-tag to see a vid where ninety five per cent of the images were chosen specifically because they contain prettiness! )

Stay tuned through the credits!

Also available on imeem and downloadable from Megaupload.

You can see the rest of my Schoolhouse Rock series here - now featuring Heroes, Chuck, Harry Potter and more Supernatural vids.

In non-SPN news, I got my Remix assignment, and OMG-flail-squee! I am the luckiest person ever! This is going to be fun, yet terrifying! Thank you so much, [livejournal.com profile] musesfool, for your amazing work with this!
heidi: (the_eight)
1. [livejournal.com profile] zia_narratora has recreated the tragic stories from Les Miserables, as told by peeps! Sneak peek behind the cut ) or see the whole of the brilliant and tragic and prettily pastel coloured story here.

2. On the fourth day of the fourth month, then will come The Eight.

Sound familiar? Then you may've been in The Zone back in the spring of 1996, when [livejournal.com profile] laughingirl and I typed in pages and pages from The Eight (see icon) in an attempt to convince everyone in said Zone to read the entire book. If you've never read it, the first chapter is available via Amazon here - hey, Lisa, that url is a lot easier to C&P in than typing that entire chapter was, right? And does anyone still have [livejournal.com profile] ginsu's parody of that first chapter? If so, please share?
[Poll #960322]

3. Random Fics I've Read This Week And Enjoyed:
Sam Gets Genie Powers in a fic from [livejournal.com profile] regala_electra
Relevance by [livejournal.com profile] marinarusalka, in honor of National Poetry Month
Circa Jan 2006 fic on Dean, learning Latin by [Bad username or site: fryadvocate</a @ livejournal.com] - got the link via [livejournal.com profile] spnroundtable

Other Stuff I've Enjoyed This Week:
ShinyShiny's list of photo editing programs that are free or supercheap
[livejournal.com profile] fishzilla's cartoony and [livejournal.com profile] thereisnospoon's pencily Peter and Sam With Emo Bangs art (probably worksafe? Unless work is really really conservative?)
The posts in [livejournal.com profile] bookshop's lj on Draco and Harry and series-development, and the discussion that sorta led to in [livejournal.com profile] sistermagpie's livejournal on Myrtle as a Fangirl
This shirt, as featured by ShinyShiny
The Wedding of [livejournal.com profile] dezzikitty and [livejournal.com profile] jiggery_pokery
X Rated Fusion Liquor - it's got vodka, blood oranges and passion fruit, and it's not only extremely pink, it's also yummy! So is Absolut Pear! On the other hand, Bailey's Carmel? Isn't worth the calories; it's just not that supertasty.

Have also finalized Spring & Summer travel plans. Northeast, here I come! Again! And Again! And possibly, again!

And can anyone figure out what's wrong with this Linksys wireless adapter that has caused Amazon to mark it down to about five bucks, from about sixty?
heidi: (Default)
Wheee, fixed coding in recs section!

From last week's [livejournal.com profile] hp_fridayfive:

1. How do you feel about Dumbledore's avoidance of Harry in OotP?

I was very unhappy with it in the course of the story, and especially when I got to the end with Sirius and the veil, because there was a linear causation from one to the other. I understand why he thought he had to do it, but I think he was wrong - just like he was wrong not to bring Kreacher to the cave!

2. Name a favorite crackpot Potter theory.

That the Blacks are descended from Rowena Ravenclaw, and the Tapestry was originally created by her.

That Scabbers transformed in the night while at the Weasleys for all those years and Manchurian Candidate-ed either Percy or Ron - or both.

When Hagrid said he "flew" to the Hut on the Rock, he flew via Thestral, which Harry couldn't yet see.

3. Do you think Sirius (consciously or not) mistaking Harry for James actually caused more harm than good?

I don't think he really did, actually. I think he wanted to see aspects of James in Harry, and that's it.

4. Tonks: Love her, hate her, or somewhere in-between?

She was full of potential in OotP, but I hate the idea that she'd lose her powers because of unrequited love. Ginny didn't! Nor did Ron or Hermione or Cho or anyone else - why, randomly, Tonks?

Silly plotline.

5. What Hogwarts house would you definitely NOT belong in?

Slytherin. I am just not that cunning. At all.

Supernatural recs:

Two by [livejournal.com profile] big_pink:
Dazzleland - “Someone goes over Niagara in a barrel. You gonna jump in and try to save them?” – Dean Winchester, Crossroad Blues. Sam’s making plans, and they don’t include his father or hunting. They might not even include Dean. High school in two time periods, with spoilers through Croatoan. WIP but nine chapters are up and it's close to finishing. It's as gen as an episode - or three - of the show.

Red. "Something evil is killing treeplanters in the forests of the Pacific Northwest, possibly the same predator that Dean narrowly escaped years before. How Grimm will things get before the brothers figure it out?" Completed fic, discussion of sexual abuse and very bad things, some het, and again, as gen as an episode - or three.

[livejournal.com profile] unperfectwolf's Days Dawning; Pure Morning- an outside perspective on Sam in his first two years at Stanford, from the perspective of his roommate

[livejournal.com profile] mahoni's untitled ficlet based on Home

[livejournal.com profile] musesfool's Give Me a Leonard Cohen Afterworld - "Sam wakes up one morning, and it's as if he's living the life he'd always dreamed of having. There's just one small problem." I was shaking through most of this fic, terrified of how it would end - this is probably technically a horror-free "episode" - no monster of the week - but there is major emotional "horror" and it kept me shaking. Meep.

[livejournal.com profile] copperbadge is writing "episodes" of Heroes to keep us all going through the hiatus! Chapter One: Facing the Firestorm
Chapter Two: A Family Decision
Two Steps Back, with a focus on Claude and Peter - how Parasite could have gone, but didn't - by [livejournal.com profile] philote_auctor
heidi: (JustMyType)
The Spring 2005 issue of Movie Magic Magazine has just hit newsstands with about 40 pages of stories on Harry Potter, with a focus on Book Six, Movie Four and various fandom projects as well (thanks to Jenna at DanRadcliffe.com for the Table of Contents scan). The issue includes my follow-up to last year's article about fanfiction (I'll be able to post the original article in July - it was edited a bit, and some things were tweaked from the way I originally wrote it, as happened last time, but that's showbiz journalism, as well as a story about fan films, including Potter Puppet Pals, and a focus on some popular fandom websites including TLC and I think they also mention The Lexicon. [livejournal.com profile] ladyjaida has a snip of the fanfic article here and I'm going to see if I can at least post the whole list here on my LJ...

Enjoy!

(Oh, and PS - last year there was some wank along the lines of OMG TPTB will know about fanfic from this article! Eeeeek! and some less panicky "will this impact JKR's take on fanfic?" posts as well. Hopefully, that won't happen again, because, well, nothing negative happened because of last year's article, did it? Is everyone more relaxed this year? Please?)
