Last week? Infinitus. All Infinitus, all the time. I was pretty much jill-of-all-trades hither and yon at the Royal Pacific in the con-space, and for a few hours each day, with my family. Why my husband thought I would be able to look after the kids for two hours each evening is just... But it was amazing to watch them enjoy the kids' program (no, it wasn't a kids' track, they were just in a room for crafts, activities, discussions and fun stuff) and by 2012, Harry will (kindasorta) be almost old enough to actually be a registrant.

The most gorgeous thing about Infinitus to me was being able to walk around the hotel, and especially around Hogsmeade, and see friends everywhere. At NoaTW and when I went back to the park for an hour on Sunday after dinner, before the amazing Drinks + HBP At The Pool extravaganza (um, Zoners, can HP people GANZA too?), I saw familiar and friendly faces everywhere; it was like walking around Hogsmeade on an Old Boys' and Girls' weekend, like a page out of our own AU of Paradigm of Uncertainty. I could go back any random day, but I think I'm going to save the trips to the WWoHP for when friends are in town to see it. I'll go with anyone I know, because I don't want to walk around there alone just yet...

I have reports and squees and thoughts on con-crit (pun intended) and a few scattered photos, but if you posted a con report before yesterday, or have any photos that I happen to be in, please let me know! And if you took any photos that show the LCD screens when they had the gorgeous front and back cover images that [livejournal.com profile] jin_fenghuang did (you can also see them here) she would love to see them! Must finish off my [livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_bigbang vid first, though.

Brief Infinitus linkspam:
Shaebay's amazing 'plant' information which you may've seen in the trees
A piece from the UMichigan school paper about A Very Potter Musical and A Very Potter Sequel, the latter of which was shown on Saturday night and which caused those massive lines. The shows were both written and produced - by a team of undergrads (and a few grad students) at the university; they filmed it back in 2009 and it became a massive YouTube sensation, sort of like Potter Puppet Pals in days of old, and by showing at Infinitus, almost 1300 people got to see it.
Rumor has it Universal ran though a multi-year supply of Butterbeer mugs in about two to three weeks. They've been running short on other things, too, because the demand is outpacing the supply, especially things like Snape-items (including his wand) and Pygmy Puffs. Lucky me, I have a mug and a Puff!
An interesting post that discusses not just Infinitus but also Avatar the Series with some anthropological perspective
Oh, and do friend [livejournal.com profile] ascendio2012. We won't have much news in the coming weeks or months, so it won't be very highly trafficked for now, but if you add it now, you'll start to see stuff as we post it. An amazing team is coming together for 2012 and I cannot wait!

This week: Liss came back to Miami with me, and we hung out, watched Glee, talked HP and cons and weather and amazing cookies and she helped me shop for groceries as we had nothing in the house. My sister went out of town today and her dog Zoe is moving in tomorrow, and my kids can't wait! And alas, the likelihood of me going to Comic Con has basically slipped to a virtual zero, because Aaron has to be in LA for deposition prep by 11 AM PDT on Monday and there's not enough time for me to do my Harry Potter panel on Sunday afternoon, and then fly home in time for him to fly out to LA. I will miss all of you, but between trips to NYC and D*Con this fall - and hopefully How to Succeed in February or March, I'll see a lot of you in the next few months including...

Next week in Washington, DC or Williamsburg, VA. We're coming up to DC next Friday and would love to see as many people as can make it for dinner at Bua just off DuPont Circle on Saturday night. Still finalizing times but it should be around 5:30. LMK if you're possibly able to make it, and I'll let you know as the plans finalize.

Has anyone done the Washington Monument tour recently? I have actually never been up but we have tickets to go up on Saturday morning.

Next Sunday we are heading for Williamsburg, and I hope to see [livejournal.com profile] bookshop and [livejournal.com profile] eibil_libbie if she is in town. Anyone else in the general vicinity? We'll be in the area through August 7.

Of course, the night before we go, [livejournal.com profile] roguebitch will be joining me in Miami Beach for OMGOMG a Crowded House concert! We have front row seats! There will be a Neil right in front of us and we will scream and squee and sing along a lot! I cannot wait!

I know I've been bad at keeping up on LJ recently - how many days behind am I on that HP meme? I promise I'll start tomorrow - but now that Infinitus is over I'll have a bit more time, I hope. I've hardly read anything in a week, so message me if there's something you think I need to read.

01. Discuss how you got into Harry Potter

02. Your favorite book

03. What house would you be in?

Sparklypoo! Just like Pansy in my icon!

No, seriously, I keep getting sorted into Hufflepuff, but I have had my moments of braverism[/wicked], although they're mostly of the intellectual variety where I do wacky things like try to school Apple on why fair use means that an iPhone app that contains a schedule for a conference is allowed to use "elements" from Harry Potter such as character names in the summaries of sessions that are focused on things like analysis of said character's personality.

I am really wondering if the ALA would've had the same response if they created an app with a schedule in it that had titles like "The Impact of the Harry Potter series on Millennial YA Novels" because that contains an element right there. Anyhow, as you'll find out tomorrow, thanks to a few phone calls and the fact that the law is 100% on our side, there's gonna be a shiny new Infinitus App tomorrow (yes, you could find it now but the schedule times haven't been perfectly updated, so if you get it make sure you update it tomorrow or Thursday, too).

Back to houses! I'm not a Slytherin, but I love and respect my friends who are. I do love reading and knowledge, but I have major issues with formulas and maths and would probably not thrive in Ravenclaw, even if the Hat saw a bit of bibliomania in my head. I tend to throw myself into projects and work weirdly intensely at them, which feels vaguely Hufflepuffian. So even though I look really, really bad in yellow, I stand with the badgers.

Future Days )

So, tomorrow, I am getting:
1. New Crowded House album (download)
2. New Naomi Novik novel (download, purchasing a paper copy for her to sign at Infinitus)
3. New White Collar episode (viewed if I am in my hotel room by then, DL on itunes otherwise
4. Butterbeer at the WWoHP if I have time to run in
5. New iPhone/iPad Infinitus Scheduling App called the Sorting App! It is downloadable from the iTunes store now but needs an update on the scheduled times, etc. So I recommend getting it tomorrow. It's terrific.

This is what the back of my car looked like before I put my suitcase in.And the back seat is full of bags from Lush - about 500 lucky, randomly chosen Infinitus registrants will get a lovely LUSH giftie in their registration pack. LOVE the Aventura, FL LUSH for being so supportive of Harry Potter & fandom!

Heading up to Orlando in about nine hours. Should catch some sleep first... if I can!

SO excited! SQUEE! Fandomy fun!

Does anyone have the drinks menu for any of the past HPEF cons? The Orchid Bar and Tchoup Chop want to get creative. The one interesting and obvious new limitation this year is, no butterbeer at the hotel bars, just at the WWoHP.

In the last ten days I have: Had a child graduate from elementary school and win the first Outstanding AR Reader award for hitting 945 AR points (he would've hit a thousand by the close of the school year but the librarian took ill *at* the graduation although she is doing fine now, so they didn't open the library on those last two days); taken said child and friend to camp; been home for 36 hours; started the younger kids at camp; gone to Orlando; got terrible blisters because of a bad shoe choice; listened to John Williams conduct music from Harry Potter, met JK Rowling in the shop inside Hogwarts Castle as I was putting my stuff in a locker to go on The Forbidden Journey ride for the first time; participated in round tables with cast & park-and-film art & producer people; flown on a Hippogryff and on a broomstick; pondered kareoke songs to sing during Infinitus; got a terrible bugbite on my back (I blame Aragog); eaten two Cauldron Cakes; drank far too many Butterbeers; hung out with friends at The Three Broomsticks; tweeted a lot and counted the days to Infinitus.

26, btw. 22 until I get on-site.

Registration closes in three days, so if you are coming and haven't registered yet and have any interest in going to the feasts, you need to now. And Night of a Thousand Wizards sold out a few days ago, but there is a waitlist if you're registered.

Things I know I am doing at Infinitus:
Presenting twice on Thursday
Selling "Keep Calm & Carry Wands" gear at the Craft Faire to support FA's upcoming server purchase (more on this next month) on Thursday evening
Going to the amazing luncheon on Friday featuring [livejournal.com profile] naominovik, [livejournal.com profile] sarahtales, [livejournal.com profile] aliwilgus, [livejournal.com profile] karenhealey and [livejournal.com profile] rj_anderson, moderated by [livejournal.com profile] pegkerr.
Going to Night of a Thousand Wizards
Drinking frozen Butterbeer at The Three Broomsticks with friends on Wednesday night
Going to a dozen amazing panels on Friday & Saturday
Helping at Registration on Tuesday and Wednesday

Things I am doing before Infinitus:
*Choosing what dress to wear for NoaTW (more info on clothing coming on Tuesday)
*Trying to get many of you to volunteer to be programming prefects and/or security volunteers. Programming prefecting is easy - you just sit in your assigned programming sessions (and you can choose the ones you want if nobody's claimed them yet) and keep time and make sure the question process is organized. Volunteer sign-up info is here and programming prefects have almost nothing to do before the event starts. If you haven't seen the formal programming times yet, they're all up here
*Finding better shoes to wear around the parks because those sandals cut me.
*Catching up on LJ. If you posted something this past week that you think I should read (fic, meta, news, etc., please link me to it!)
*Getting a chair massage tomorrow. SO much driving this week, so I desperately need it.

There is one thing I wanted to post about re the Forbidden Journey ride. As Reuters reported yesterday and others have reported in the last few weeks, there is an issue for people of larger size in being able to ride the Forbidden Journey:
Jeff Guillaume of Lansing, Michigan, who in 2002 founded an early online Harry Potter news aggregator and fan site HPANA.com, said fans like him will be disappointed because of limitations on body size to ride the Forbidden Journey.

At 5 feet, 8 inches and 265 pounds (1.72 meters and 119 kg), Guillaume said his mid-section would not allow the restraint system to close, so he could not board the most heavily promoted ride. He said some other rides include special cars for larger guests.

But [Thierry] Coup said that Orlando Magic basketball player Dwight Howard fit into the restraint and rode the ride this week. Howard is listed on the NBA's website as 6 feet, 11 inches tall and weighing 265 pounds (2.11 meters and 119 kg).

I can't tell what the maximum weight-height ratio is. I know people who are 5 foot 5 and 200 pounds who got on, as well as someone who is 5 foot 7 and 230, but I think we'll hear more on this. But if your BMI is over 37 or 38, you may have an issue getting onto the ride. There are seats out front to test, and if you can't ride you should still walk through the castle queue - it's definitely worth an hour to get to see it all! And hopefully they will figure out a way to tweak the seating system to allow people of larger size to ride.

Night of a Thousand Wizards schedule & ticket sales
Universal has released about 200 additional tickets to Night of a Thousand Wizards, so we have about 400 left for sale. We are closing ticket sales on June 23, unless we sell out before then, and no tickets to NoaTW will be sold on-site, so purchase your tickets now by registering or modifying a registration here.
Learn more about Night of a Thousand Wizards here.

Speaking of Sell-Outs...
We have only a few Full registrations still available, as well about 100 Merlin's Circle registrations and under 20 add-on tickets to the Welcome and Leaving Feasts, so if you want to attend the Infinitus Feasts, we highly recommend registering (or upgrading) as soon as possible. No Full or Merlin's Circle registrations or Feast tickets will be sold on-site although single- and two-day registrations will be. Click here to register or here to read the Registration FAQ.

It's the 50th anniversary of its release this summer, and I didn't realise it until I saw it in the Times this morning.

Is anyone interested in doing a meet-up-style discussion of TKaM at Infinitus, or do I have to make my husband do it?

Coming tomorrow, or maybe Thursday, Infinitus polls!

Coming tomorrow, or maybe Thursday, Infinitus polls!

We're just a little more than 100 days away from Infinitus, and some of the teams are looking for staffers. As usual, we need Security Team members to work during the event, as well as Programming Prefects to keep things on time and organized in the various Formal Programming rooms and the Registration Team especially needs people to volunteer on Wednesday and Thursday to do check-in.

Also, we're doing something very nifty, so the Informal Programming Committee is looking for a few dancers for a very special segment! Dancing background is a plus, but is not necessary. It just requires a willingness to learn and a desire to have some fun!

Most significantly, we are looking for one or two people to chair the Sponsorship and Vendor Committee(s) - our prior chair had a death in the family and isn't able to stay in the position, but is available to help transition. Sponsorship will require a good amount of work before Infinitus and not as much on-site, whereas the Vendor Chair will have a lot more to do on-site - and needs to be in town at least from Wednesday morning on, through Sunday. Locals - or spouses of locals who aren't necessarily planning to attend all of Infinitus - would be terrific on the Vendor side of things.

If you are interested in helping out in any of these roles, just fill out an application, found here, then send the application and any questions to volunteers@Infinitus2010.org and we'll get you all set up!

With a few notes and a HUGE and terrific announcement:

1. I have tasted some of the wonderful treats that will soon be on sale at the Three Broomsticks and they are all amazing. I can't talk about specifics yet but omgflail everything is beyond delicious.

2. Hogwarts at the WWoHP looks lovely in the rain. But the sunshine on it is gorgeous, too. Check it out!

3. The Elvis Library at the Hard Rock Cafe is wonderful, but it's sad when a bar runs out of absinthe.

4. I still haven't had a chance to wander around CityWalk. Maybe after the Park closes tonight - we are having meetings and working all day but we should be able to go to the Park for the last three hours. Any locals want to meet up at Margaritaville at 8:30-ish tonight?

5. Amazing meetings at Universal yesterday, and we got a terrific piece of news:
We are excited to announce that our exclusive Infinitus event in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter only at Universal Orlando Resort’s Islands of Adventure will take place on Friday, July 16! More details, including pricing and times, will be coming soon - our park access will be after hours and will be only for Infinitus attendees (and possibly a guest per attendee). We know you are excited as we are for this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

We can't talk yet about the awesome that this add-on event will include, but soon, we will. I strongly recommend registering for a single-day pass, a full registration or a Merlin's Circle registration sooner than later. Also, the Royal Pacific is filling up - although there are still many rooms available at the Portofino and the Hard Rock - so it would be a good idea to make your hotel reservation. too. There will be in-park benefits during regular operating hours for those staying at any of the three Universal Resort hotels.

6. Six is on the Simpsons Ride. Again.

7. Have people seen Percy Jackson? Aaron is taking the kids today and I think they may want to go again on Monday, so I may have to sit through it. Is there a scene equivalent to the ninety seconds of Hedwig flying in PS/SS that I hated so much?

8. Because of all the blackouts and blizzards and school and road closures and weather-ish messes, we've extended the deadline for programming submissions. If you haven't looked over the CFP yet, check it out here.
To submit a proposal for Infinitus 2010, please send an email to fpsubmissions@infinitus2010.org no later than midnight EST on February 28, 2010 with the following information:
· Name of presenter(s):
· Email address(es) of presenter(s):
· Phone number of presenter(s):
· Title of presentation:
· Presentation format (Lecture, Panel, Roundtable or Workshop):
· Time needed for presentation (20, 50, 80, 120 minutes):
· Presentation proposal (fewer than 500 words):
· Presenter biography (fewer than 150 words):
· Equipment and materials requested (e.g. whiteboard, projector [LCD or overhead]), if any:

I've seen a bunch of submissions from many of you, but so many of you have interesting things to talk about. Suggest a round-table that you want to lead, put together a panel, or do a paper - it'll be terrific. Also, remember that you can present if you only have a single-day registration.

Am home from a wonderful three day adventure in Orlando with family and friends, where we saw the Osbourne Family lights at Hollywood Studios, rode Everest, allowed my four year old to go on the Jurassic Park ride (which she loved!) and enjoyed a Pom margarita at, obviously, Margaritaville.

Also, I got to see a bunch of spaces at CityWalk which are perfect for group/website/podcast/ship/interest group/meet-up events during Infinitus, and gaze upon Hogwarts without the scaffolding and it looks amazingly gorgeous (and the wizarding world *can* make palm trees grow in Scotland, right?).

Then, I came home, and unpacked, and woke to Yuletide treasures!

Two lovely fics for me! So gorgeously glorious to read!

And the bizarre thing was that I dreamed that I was reading a Yuletide fic and it wasn't anything I had requested, and I can't actually remember it anyway, but then I woke up and saw OMG TWO fics and wanted to read them both at the same time but I couldn't so I went in alphabetical order by fandom:

The Queen's Gambit Accepted: (Chess - Rice/Ulvaeus/Andersson) Fifteen years after Bangkok, Anatoly Sergievsky seeks advice from the one person who knows him well - his ex-wive, Svetlana.
Svetlana is unmistakably brilliant and kick-arse, Anatoly is having issues, and the dialogue and setup are spot-on perfection. A fantastic coda to the musical!

The Painting: (White Collar) Peter Burke and Neal Caffrey are going to one of Elizabeth's events.
Mmmmm, Peter and Neal shopping for tuxes. Peter and Neal at a museum gala. Elizabeth being adorable and smart. And it looks like it might actually be a 'verse? With more to come on the story? While I think it's a terrific, true-to-canon tale to begin with, if there does turn out to be more chapters here, it would make my 2010! (And Yuletide Writer of Wonderfulness, I will point out that my birthday is in three weeks.)

In less cheery news, the screen on my laptop got damaged over the weekend and I have a few hundred missing pixels on the top right of my screen, which is probably the best physical place to have issues. But, still. Taking it to the SONY store on Monday to see if there is anything they can do.

Merry Christmas to all who celebrate it! Hope you have a wonderful day!
