[personal profile] cee_m has organized [community profile] fandom_helps on Dreamwidth - it's a fandom charity auction to benefit Planned Parenthood. You can post offers through February 13, and bidding runs from February 14 through February 21.

I'm going to offer a vid and possibly something more (although I won't be posting til tomorrow because of RL-cannot be online issues) so even though Komen has reversed itself (sort of) on the mammograms issue, it's still a great way to support an important and life-saving organization.

OMGYAY SPN! 25 hours away! Now, how can I convince my husband to take the kids out for ice cream tomorrow night so I can have an HOUR for SHOW?

I'm celebrating with a vid! [livejournal.com profile] serenada_art won me in Help_Japan, and requested something SPN set to Chumbawumba's Tubthumping, so that's what I did! Spoilers through the end of Season 6 but no hints about anything in S7.

Gen, PG for violence, created as a transformative work, etc.

You can download it on Megaupload or watch it on YouTube via the link or behind the cut )

Warnings: MPREG and crack.

Title: Dean, You're Having My Baby.

Song: Having My Baby as performed by Cory Monteith in S1 of Glee. No connection with his role in Wendigo is intended.

Summary: Castiel's touch is more powerful than Dean knows - and he's not using the right kind of protection when dealing with an angel. Castiel tells Dean his feelings about this unexpected situation, in song.

Ship: Dean/Castiel! Srsly!

Purpose of this Vid: Created for [personal profile] missyjack as she won me in a 2010 auction. It took this long for Show to film and broadcast the perfect clips. Thank you, Misha and Jensen for being you.

Warnings/Rating: Well, that kids book Mr Seahorse was a G-rated thing, so the presence of mpreg itself doesn't raise the rating here. So, PG-13 for violence and self-harm.

Download the vid via Megaupload here or watch it on YouTube here or behind the cut. )

Hey, my mood icon showcases Sam's emotions on learning about the situation!

re: your dismissal of fan-created works, which was weird, dismissive of Pulitzer prize winning works and other classics, and most frustrating to me, inaccurate regarding the legal issues (although, of course, what you feel is ethical or not is a decision that is entirely your call)

I have a question.

Spoilers for last night's Chuck and a few other shows which have aired in the last two or three years )

I really want to address the discussion of [livejournal.com profile] help_haiti, but I am having a hard time doing so without crying. People - not just fanfic writers and fanartists and vidders and iconers but novelists and musicians from around the world - got together to do something positive to help people in need.

I was involved in both [livejournal.com profile] help_haiti and Helping Haiti Heal - both were grass-roots projects and collectively, they raised about a quarter of a million dollars which went to Partners in Health, UNICEF, the Red Cross, Red Crescent, Yele and over a dozen more organizations. We sent five-plus planes full of supplies to Haiti this spring because of fannish efforts.

And both projects included thank-yous from fan-creators and notable authors. For example, Helping Haiti Heal's thank-yous included wizard rock memorabilia, and a signed set of Harry Potter books donated by JKR. It included fanart, and signed books from Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett. Naomi Novik donated the ability to name a character in an upcoming book of hers, and Melissa Anelli personalized copies of her book about the Harry Potter fandom.

Fans and creators came together to do something wonderful, and it helped lives.

Now, how is that like seduction of someone's husband (and, btw, doesn't it take two to tango? Nobody cheats unless they want to.) or for (oh my God I cannot believe this comparison) hell's sake how is that like rape or even taking flowers from a garden?

No, no author has to be as understanding of her fans' urge to create stories or art or vids based on her works as JK Rowling has been.

But I can think of at least a dozen women who, in the last decade, have written (or beta read) Harry Potter fanfic and gone on to publishing contracts and best-sellers and sales of the movie rights to their books - and I know a dozen more who're going to reach that milestone in the next year or two. Yes, people would still be writing Harry Potter fanfic even if JKR wasn't relatively okay with it, because it would still be transformative and fair use and since fair use is a lawful use of copyright...

And that's a good thing.

Oh, and I have one last question for Ms Gabaldon.

When people make icons that include bits of your book covers, how do you feel about that? Because I am really kind of curious...

And tomorrow at 5:45 AM a plane named "HARRY" will fly over my house (more or less) to Haiti, filled with relief items paid for through donations to the Help_Haiti_Heal fundraiser conducted by a range of Harry Potter fansites. Prizes for those who contributed were drawn tonight in a live podcast - congrats to all the winners (I was putting kids to sleep so I couldn't tune in and have no idea who won...)

Thanks SO much to everyone who's posted an offer, pimped the comm, bid on something, created icons (see them below!) and contributed to this fundraising effort. We have over a hundred items on offer already, and as per the poll from this morning, we'll allow people to add things until the morning of January 20 (Eastern Standard Time).

Posts are staying relatively well organized; I'm checking them every few hours, but if anything gets very out of control, please email me so I see it relatively quickly. If the posts start to get out of control, we might need to do index posts, but if they stay as they are we should be ok.

Please visit the post here to see the current list of charities that auction winners can donate to. I was thinking that a confirmation-of-donation process next week that involves screencaps of redacted donation confirmations, combined with scanned/photographed receipts if anyone donates via cash in person, might work, but suggestions for how other fandom-run fundraisers have done it before would be much appreciated. And if you have other organizations to add to the list, or issues with any of those listed, please comment!

All three Doctors Without Borders locations. The air traffic control system. United Nations buildings. Homes. The presidential palace and government buildings and schools; the closest you can come to saying anything was lucky is that the quake happened when it did and not three hours earlier when schools and government offices would have been full.

They believe that hundreds of thousands may have been killed, but the final death toll may never be known.

FiveThirtyEight has a terrific piece about the history of Haiti - why it's been so damaged by political *and* environmental catastrophies over the last 100+ years.

I live only 700 miles from Haiti, and people across Miami today are waiting to hear from friends and relatives; our local disaster teams are heading down there throughout the day, but the infrastructure of the country has been wracked by the earthquake so terribly that it's unclear if help will be able to get to those who need it to save their lives.

It will take years to rebuild the country - as Anderson is reporting on CNN right now, there is a huge need for anything and everything.

I put together some links to organizations and charities soliciting donations on [livejournal.com profile] help_haiti, which I set up this morning as a locus for an auction of creative works (fan and original) - offering posts should be up this afternoon and bidding can start immediately - but keep checking back as offers will be added into early next week!

[livejournal.com profile] help_haiti. Please.

Also, I know I knew how to do this at some point but can someone please tell me how to do those boxes with the scroll bar on the right, where someone can cut & paste the content inside into a comment, so we can have a template for Offerings?

But no Supernatural tonight, and I entirely forgot until I didn't see any squee about it on Twitter. ALAS, what am I to watch?

Oh yeah, Yankees game! That'll do. Oh, and [livejournal.com profile] legomymalfoy, could you email me re a mood theme issue when you have a sec?

1. The Nation is going to be releasing a book about Sarah Palin the same day her book comes out, and it's called Going Rouge and the cover looks very similar to the autobiography book that she wrote actually had ghostwritten for her. Covers are behind the cut )

So, what do you think? Permissible parody, fair use or copyright infringement? Can the cover be a parody even if the content inside is not a parody? In general, one cannot have a trademark or a copyright in the title of a book, but the trade dress of Palin's book may be protectable, and it's possible that a court would decide that the cover of Going Rouge is not a parody.

So I wonder if The Nation came up with the cover and title for PR/shock value and to get people talking about the book, or whether they actually expect to get taken to court and be forced to change it. Very interesting, very curious.

2. Michelle Obama with a green hula hoop!

3. Totally lost track of time at the gym today, and didn't realise that 50 minutes had passed until they had. That's what happens when you listen to Walking on Sunshine/Halo, Sweet Caroline, It's My Life/Confessions and Last Name, then re-watch the Pilot episode of Glee! Loved it last night, thought the musical numbers were all terrific, and am *thrilled* that the soundtrack is available as a prepurchase on iTunes, comes out right after Halloween and includes a song that hasn't been on the show yet )

4. Check out the updated Infinitus website! I was at Universal yesterday for a brief meeting after spending two days with DD, Princessing at Disney World, and Hogsmeade and Hogwarts are looking fantastic. I also got to see an artist's rendition of the inside of the Triwizard Tournament-inspired rollercoaster refurb, and it looks fantastic. I don't plan to actually ride that ride, as it goes upside-down and I won't do that, but I will definitely walk through the pre-show thing to see this amazingness in person.

The Infinitus CFP is also up, and I'll babble more about that next week.

5. [livejournal.com profile] gwendolyngrace and other fandomers are at the preview night for the Harry Potter Exhibition in Boston tonight and I wish I'd been able to get up there for that - and the Jason Manns concert tonight, too! - but I couldn't travel again this week, not with Aaron and I planning to go to LA in November. Must find out who (other than Kris Allen) is supposed to be on Conan that night, and score tickets if it's anyone interesting.

6. Is on a plane.

7. [livejournal.com profile] laughingirl has another round of auctions up right now, including bears signed by Donny Osmond, Kerry Butler, Olivia Newton-John, future GLEE director Joss Whedon, Lance Bass and more. Check it out, and bid! It's all for a terrific cause - breast cancer research!

8. Next week, [livejournal.com profile] glockgal and I are going to launch a CafePress store to raise money for DonorsChoose projects, so stay tuned!

9. Definitely planning to come to Wincon next October. Chicago is so much easier for me to get to than Denver was, and it'll be fantastic to meet so many of you, and see so many of you again. And speaking of SPN events, Creation's added a New Jersey event in July of 2010 to its website. Definitely not planning to go as it's only a week before Infinitus, and I'm going to be, um, busy. And there's no guests listed yet either. But it's a bit of a surprise to see it there.

10. I got a few concerned emails last week re the Sidekick outage, but I haven't had a Sidekick in almost 15 months. I ditched it when the second iPhone came out, and then unloaded it on my dad when the G1 came out. And now I am surreptitiously eyeing the newer phones Verizon is bringing out this fall that have Android. SO glad I'm no longer on the Sidekick system!
