My Everchanging Moods excited

I have so many feels about Show last night, I can't even. But I'll try...

Back in the summer of 2005, I was at the Beverly Hilton with my grandma; we were in town for my niece's babynaming and there were all these posters all over the hotel for the new season of shows on TheWB, including something called Supernatural. It looked too horrorshow for me.

It took until 2006 for so many of you to fangirl it so hard that I started watching; I haven't stopped, I'm still into Show, and that's why my soul is overflowing with joy at how much #Supernatural200 was/is a love letter from Supernatural to the fans, and from the fans to the show. Thanks to the network, the writers, producers, directors, cast (past and present) and everyone behind the scenes, but more than that...

Thanks to the creative minds in this fandom, because without their fic, art, cosplay & more, #Supernatural200 wouldn't exist.

This episode - this transformative episode of a show that's not some meandering genre dreck - exists because the fans have created so much awesome. No other show can do - or say - that like Supernatural can.

Go, fangirl.

Because what every Supernatural fan has done to create, inspire, share, rec, curate and squee about when fangirling (or fanboying) is the reason we have this episode. Thank you, fandom, for doing so much to make #SPN200 possible.

I have a hunch that

missyjack and I may try to parlay this into a panel at SDCC this summer, because what's happened with SPN and its fandom, as shown by, in and through this episode, is unique - and probably not emulatable by any other show, film, webseries or book series, but it's a fascinating showcase of what happens when The Powers That Be let the transformative works develop amongst the fans. It's aspirational, it's magical and it's family.

And now I have to go and ponder whether a fan-staging of "Fan Fiction" would be a transformative work/fair use.

Today has been an absolutely magnificent perfect storm of things that are partially about fannish creativity and legal issues. Basically, within a fifteen minute time frame of my life today, I did an analysis of copyright language, got a text that the ruling in the Google Books case was in and it was a massigve victory for Fair Use and transformative works in so many ways that can be analogized to fanfic, and *then* while I was sitting in my car tweeting about it, the Amazon delivery guy arrived with my copy of FIC: Why Fanfiction Is Taking Over the World (and if you haven't started Following FIC editor Anne Jamison on tumblr yet, today is the day to!).

I have three fandoms that I definitely want to nominate: Tomorrow People 2013, Julian May's Galactic Milieu novels and Tuff Turf (for which there is absolutely NO fic on Ao3 and isn't that a crime of Downey-Spader proportions?).

I almost stopped at some point in S7 - but I watched them all by the time the season ended, and loved Season Eight in so many ways, and for so many reasons.

Now That's What I Call... Still Into You

Flourish, me and Anne Jamison (the editor of the FIC! book from SmartPop that I've written a chapter for) have panel proposals up for voting for SXSW and SXSWEDU.

All you have to do is take a minute to register, and a moment to vote - the Public Vote portion of the South By Southwest selection process counts for about 30% of the selection process, so your support might tip us over the edge!

Only a few proposals were submitted for SXSW 2014 sessions that focus on fans - their creativity, marketing to them, dealing with legal issues involving them, etc.

Luckily, two of the proposals - one in SXSWEDU and one in SXSW2014 - are fantastic, and fronted by experts on fannish creativity - including the editor of SmartPopBooks' upcoming FIC! collection, and one of the essayists who's included in that book. .

Professor Anne Jamison of the University of Utah has teamed up with intellectual property/fandom lawyer Heidi Tandy for the SXSWEDU proposal, which you can vote for (and post to FB/LinkedIn/Twitter about) at http://panelpicker.sxsw.com/vote/25460 - the presentation is inspired by SmartPop Books' upcoming FIC! which is a collection of essays about fanfiction and fandom in the past and at present, with predictions for the future. This session is unique in the SXSWEDU track because of its focus on a topic that resonnates with teens and young adults and captures their attention in the classroom.

Heidi has also teamed up with Flourish Klink of The Alchemists for "Why Fanfiction Is Taking Over the Worls" - you can vote and support it here: http://panelpicker.sxsw.com/vote/25432 . Fanfiction has become completely mainstream - in some sectors and to some creators. Whether that is a good thing for fans, for creators, for publishers, for tv networks or social media companies is a question that unfolds and changes every day. Sixth year running, we're doing a Harry Potter fan panel at Comic Con - this year it's at 4:15 in 6DE (same room as the last few years) and since it's one of the final panels at the Con, I'm strongly considering planning to decamp to a nearby bar for an hour or two afterwards to stave off post-con drop (and because my flight doesn't leave until 9:45).

Who's coming to Comic Con? Who'll still be alert and awake for our HP panel?

Amazon is working with WB to publish (read: sell) fanfiction from the Gossip Girl, Pretty Little Liars and Vampire Diaries 'verses. And they said that more "worlds" will be announced soon.

Basically, fanfic writers will be able to sell their fics - formatted for Kindle - via Amazon, and the restrictions are not as massive as you'd think!

No crossovers.

No excessive product placement for non-show brands.

No porn.

But here's the thing about porn! Amazon says they don't allow porn to be sold on their site, so as long as your fic content is no more explicit than anything that's on Amazon's site today (see: 50 Shades and anything in the erotica category) then it won't run afoul of Amazon's content restrictions - and if they say it does, then the Internet will stand behind you as if you were a Nutella fan barred from celebrating its wonderful tastiness.

HOWEVER, each World Licensor will be providing "Content Guidelines" for their specific 'verse - and I can't find those anywhere. THAT might make a significant impact on what types of fanfic one can and cannot sell, but until we've had a chance to look through them, we can't determine the specifics.

I don't think it's realistic to be concerned that the existence of Kindle Worlds will mean that tv show/film/book creators will stamp out freely given fics. At this point, Kindle Worlds will only accept things over 5000 words, anyway, and the longstanding laches issue that protects fics posted elsewhere and given away will still hold.

However, it does mean that people who write in the fandoms covered by Kindle Worlds and sell ebooks of those stories outside of the Kindle license may find themselves dealing with cease & desist letters. But there was always a chance they would because of the commercial aspect of that action.

Also, this will leave fandom with a lot of questions on issues other than legality be on fan-created gift culture, commissions, fundraising for charity, or even the ability of pro writers to write in other universes>

Does this further "legitimize" fan creativity (which I think has long been a pretty legit hobby), will it just create an additional outlet for story distribution, and what other fandoms will WB add?

I wouldn't be shocked if they bring Tomorrow People into this as the show launches in the fall, but what about things that are ending their runs like Nikita, or shows with massive fanbases and almost a decade of fan creativity, like the behemoth that is Supernatural?

Oh, and here't the royalty-related info:

Amazon Publishing will pay royalties to the rights holder for the World (we call them World Licensors) and to the Fic Author. Fic Author's standard royalty rate for works of at least 10,000 words will be 35% of net revenue.

In addition, with the launch of Kindle Worlds, Amazon Publishing will pilot an experimental new program for particularly short works (between 5,000 and 10,000 words). For these short stories—typically priced under one dollar—Amazon will pay the royalties for the World Licensor and will pay authors a digital royalty of 20% of net revenue. The lower royalty for these shorter works is due to significantly higher fixed costs per digital copy (for example, credit-card fees) when prices for the entire class of content will likely be under one dollar.

Now, I want to be very clear - I think the possible impacts of this are serious and significant and will change fandom massively - but I'm not sure that it gives any rightsholders any additional rights/chances/ability to go after anyone who's giving their fic away for free - at least not in the US, under current IP law.

Your main fandom of the year? I was as multifandomish as I've been in any recent year, but I was probably mostly Avengers-focused, except for a brief Hunger Games moment.

Your favorite film you watched this year? AVENGERS! I saw it in theaters three times in two and a half days, in two different states, and managed a total of twelve times in theaters before it wrapped up. And I squee-ed every time!

Your favorite book read this year? I started the year reading Beth Revis's Across the Universe, and I can't wait for Shades of Earth next month! (And no, I didn't finish Casual Vacancy; I got strep when I was around a third finished, and wasn't able to concentrate on anything. Hope to finish it during travels in the next month or two.)

Your favorite album or song to listen to this year? iTunes tells me that my most played song that I first listened to in 2012 was fun.'s Some Nights (Intro)/Some Nights, which is one spot ahead of the fun. cover of Call Me Maybe. The original of Call Me Maybe is only a few spots back! So, basically, Top 40 Pop!

Your favorite tv show of the year? Doctor Who's Pond sequence ended wonderfully, with solid episodes, and I loved the three Sherlock eps from back in January. I'm still watching SPN but cannot get used to the Wednesday timeslot and tend to watch it on Friday mornings, still.

I really enjoyed Political Animals (except for the plane crash concept in the final episode) and wish it had been renewed for another season. It worked as a standalone series, though.

Your best new fandom discovery of the year? Does Cabin Pressure count? It made flying actually fun, and funny, and my kids have become fans of it, too. Yellow car!

Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year? Elementary not having a military background for Joan Watson, and not having time to watch either The Hours or Teen Wolf. Political Animals and Leverage not being renewed.

Your fandom boyfriend of the year? Still Tom Hiddleston, unless Neil Finn counts because of the song on the Hobbit soundtrack. (Please, give this man an Oscar nom!)

Your fandom girlfriend of the year? Surprisingly, because I didn't adore her in IM2, I found Natasha utterly awesome in Avengers.

Your biggest squee moment of the year? Going to the sneak preview of Avengers in NYC early in the morning of April 14, almost completely unspoiled (Coulson! Rag-Doll!Loki! Shakespeare in the Park!).

I got a copy of the Carpet Book on July 16, and I read it on the 17th (it took a while to DL and extract) while YMing with a friend. Some of the bits of that conversation follow:

My Everchanging Moods nostalgic

I got home late on Monday afternoon and have been catching up on email, being organizational for Harry's bar mitzvah (omg! six weeks!), looking at everything from Comic Con including the awesome Harry Potter panel that I semi-organized, and Andrew Sims of Mugglecast hosted, and really not suffering much post-con drop because I've been chatting with so many people every minute since, on Tumblr, LJ, FB, Twitter, googlechat and sometimes phone.

I'm working on a playlist of all the awesome videos that people shot, and listening to the two postcasts I participated on: Edition, which was a little silly and recorded in the hotel lobby on Sunday afternoon, and the much more serious Mugglenet Academia on fanfic & transformative works. Download and listen - they were both awesome experiences.

If you couldn't be there, we'll also have audio recordings online here (and we now have a package of all events which might be of interest to academics, universities, organizations, etc.). Individual sessions will be online shortly.

Now, speaking personally....

This was an awesome event. The entire Senior Staff - Flourish, Gwen, Amy, Femme, Alexa, Mary, Ailene, Dave, Bekki, Mallory, Anastasia, Noe, Zorb - and our awesome team members, including Chris Rankin and Lena Gabrielle and Vicki my saviour, as well as our awesome presenters & guests, plus the IQA and HPA - were brain-blowingly fantastic and seriously, there was nothing that went wrong that couldn't be fixed within about three minutes.

Even the rain the night of NoaTW disappeared quickly!

I don't know what's going to happen next. We all went into this at least a little burned out - but at the moment, I don't know if it's the euphoria from the event itself or what, but...

So there's going to be talk about things beyond 2013 and if you're interested in talking, then let's talk. :D Personally, I won't work with Universal for a long time, if ever, for many reasons, but...

I am ridiculously sad that I can't get to Lubricus, but there is no way I can go out of state between now and The Bar Mitzvah, but I am looking at MistiCon in New Hampshire in May, because I have to be in Philadelphia that Friday afternoon, so I may be able to manage a Thursday night/Friday morning a little further north. And Wincon is still on my agenda, but it entirely depends on Aaron's work schedule, so I won't know until late September. Also, the Vegas SPN con in March!

After Nimbus we didn't know when we'd all see each other again. These days, we know that even if it's not every year, it'll be every so often and sometimes more frequent than that. Fandom is here, fandom is changing and fandom is awesome.

If I didn't see you this weekend, you were missed (and I miss you still). If I did see you and glomp you and drink with you and possibly sing kareoke with you, then I miss you right now.

But I am today, when online registration closes for the final HPEF fancon.

For those who didn't know, HPEF and our first event, Nimbus - 2003, stemmed out of discussions on the HPForGrownups Yahoogroup in 2002...

About ten years ago, a group of HPfGU members decided to organize a fancon in Orlando, Florida. Our plans became Nimbus - 2003, which was the first of so many fantastic fan-created, fan-run, not-for-profit events where Harry Potter fans could gather to discuss the books in person, in formal programming sessions and in casual meetups in restaurants, bars, Starbucks cafes and Common Rooms.

We've played Quidditch in ballrooms and in the water, we've dressed in costumes on the streets of Hogsmeade, we hosted the first Wizard Rock concert and saw Chris Rankin kidnapped by Death Eaters in 2005 and Dementors in 2008. We Wrocked Around the Rock, had Christian Coulson write in our diaries, liveblogged analyses of geography, alchemy, nomenclature, spells and whether Snape loved Lily (granted, that was in 2003 - we did not know yet!

We mourned Sirius Black and Albus Dumbledore and Dobby - and Snape - and watched deleted scenes from Chamber of Secrets while sitting in inflatable armchairs. We sat on the floor to watch Team StarKid acoustically perform Going Back to Hogwarts despite all the ladies in the cast being absent, and we toasted with Butterbeer made with liquor, or whipped cream, or soda in all the years before the WWoHP opened.

Every wrock concert, formal programming session, pick-up Quidditch game, costuming event, craft faire shopping experience, HP film cast member autograph session, Common Room meetup, Art Gallery viewing, sponsor-hosted reception, fanfilm, fanvid, fanfic reading, fan-performed show (except WXWXW) and dance is included with a Full registration - and so are our two feasts! We're looking forward to Ascendio with a sense of joy - and with some sadness as it'll be our final HPEF fancon. Some of us started working on our first HPEF event ten years ago this month, when we started planning Nimbus - 2003, which took place in Orlando in mid-July of that year. As we close the door on this aspect of our Harry Potter fandom experience, we want to share it all with you.

Most of you that I've met in person, I've met at fandom events - HPEF cons, or PoAIMAXNYC in 2004 or at Phoenix Rising in 2007. Those of you I haven't met yet, there's still events and trips and the WWoHP and Leavesden Studios and moments we will have. I can't wait to see so many friends this summer, and in all the summers and winters and springs and falls yet to come.

I'm going to offer a vid and possibly something more (although I won't be posting til tomorrow because of RL-cannot be online issues) so even though Komen has reversed itself (sort of) on the mammograms issue, it's still a great way to support an important and life-saving organization.

The one who seduced you, screwed you over, broke your heart in a million pieces, and laughed about it.
Heroes. I stuck with the damned thing until the very freaking end, and I am not unhappy that I did because my GOD the WALL-verse for Gabriel and Peter was exactly the arc they needed (well, no, the arc they needed would've been keeping them as brothers-and-possibly-twins but that lasted what, two episodes?) but there were episodes of the show that were so bad and it had such potential and the showrunners fucked it up. I will never regret anything I read or wrote or vidded, or my set visit of amazingness, but when I re-watch the Pilot or random S1 episodes, which I still do, it makes me headdesk.

The old flame you don't see very often any more but whom you still really enjoy getting together with for a few drinks and maybe a pleasant nostalgic romp.
Leverage. I'm almost the entire season behind as it aired while I was traveling, but I still read fic and am pretty well spoiled for the season and I am fine with that, and looking forward to a wonderful catch up marathon on planes in September.

The mysterious dark one whom you used to sit up with talking until 3 AM at weird coffee houses and with whom you were quite smitten until you realized s/he really was fucking crazy: Torchwood. I still haven't watched all of CoE, and while I'll happily read a crossover with something else I love, and I may very well watch all of Miracle Day at some point, I just don't trust the show not to hit one of my major squick points until it's been fully vetted to the end of the season.

The steady:
Supernatural. If it hasn't lost me yet, I don't think it's going to. To think, when I started watching back in January of 2007, nobody was sure it was going to make it through the summer! And Heroes was the big thing back then! Winchesters, I am with you til the end of the road, which I still hope will be an American Gods thing (as per

lyra_wing) but I doubt that more and more with each episode, and I'm okay with that.

The alluring stranger whom you've flirted with at parties but have never gotten really serious with: While Collar. I read it often, especially things that xover with Chuck or Leverage, but I've never been tempted to write anything, and I haven't vidded to it yet. Back in June I was wondering if the end of S2 might lead to me doing a Neal-centric vid to Little Lion Man and I am pleased to say that at this point, I don't think it works as well as I thought it might back then. But, maybe someday.

The one you hang out with and have vague fantasies about maybe having a thing with, but ultimately you're just good buddies: Current Doctor Who. I respect and appreciate Matt, Karen and Arthur, as well as Alex and Mark and the storylines but it's just not Tennant and Tate. I'm not ruling it out forever, but I'm not there right now.

The one your friends keep introducing you to and who seems like a hell of a cool person except it's never really gone anywhere: Inception. I'm so happy you're all so happy, and the film was adorable but again, I'm not there.

The one who's slept with all your friends, and you keep looking at them and thinking, "How the hell did they land all these cool people?" Still the various Stargate shows. I think they were hitting it big while I was very busy with Harry Potter things, and having babies, so I've never seen a single episode despite the fact that I loved the movie back a million years ago. I would probably like it if I ever took the time for it, but I'm just not interested in spending the time. Um, sorry?

The one who gave you the best damned summer of your life and against whom you measure all other potential partners:
Harry Potter, always and forever, my introduction to fanfic, fanart, fanvids, fanfilms, filking and massive amounts of creativity and positive social change and good things. Also, a lot of crazy, but there's crazy lurking in so many random places on the Internet, we all just need to work around it. And ship Barty Jr/Regulus Black. No, btw, am not in Pottermore yet - still waiting on my email - but I am curious where I'll get sorted and what wand I'll get. I'm mostly unspoiled for the content, too. I really want to discover this on my own, with my son.

The one you recently met at a party and would like to get to know better: Oh, XMFC, you are everywhere on my flist, and I loved the film and I have preordered my blu-ray for the missing scenes and I cannot wait for a sequel set in the time of angst that was the late 60s and 70s.

The old flame that you wouldn't totally object to hooking up with again for a one night romp if only they'd clean up a bit: Ha, no clue. I was mono-fandom-ous from 1999 through 2006, so I don't have anything other than HP from that time period at all.

Your hot new flame: Hunger Games! I'm supposed to talk about fanfic/fanart for YA novels/films at Dragon*Con next week, so I'm, um, reading for research. I think I've read every Finnick-centric fic already though?

The one who stole your significant other: Bandom. :P Ah, fandommigration, you happen and then many migrate again a few months later, don't they?

I have five days in London in July - but one of them (July 7) is going to be filled with Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows premiere-type things, and I may have stuff for that on the 6th and possibly the 8th as well.

On the 8th, also, I am going to omgomg Much Ado About Nothing SQUEE in the evening, so that's booked up.

I haven't been back in the UK since the summer of 1992 - I hear things have changed? I'd certainly consider going to the British Museum or the V&A, but what, specifically, should I go there - or to any other museum - to see?

What else do I want to do? Not Madame Tussaud's, and not the London Dungeons as they freaked the hell out of me when I was 14, but is there anything else theatrical that I must see? Restaurants, stores, museums, exhibitions? Is the Doctor Who exhibition worth it? I don't think I have time to get to Cardiff or Haye on Wye, unfortunately, not on this trip.

I'm staying by Leicester Square, if you have any nearby restaurant recs, as I'll probably need them on the 7th.
