heidi: (Ascendio)
I got home late on Monday afternoon and have been catching up on email, being organizational for Harry's bar mitzvah (omg! six weeks!), looking at everything from Comic Con including the awesome Harry Potter panel that I semi-organized, and Andrew Sims of Mugglecast hosted, and really not suffering much post-con drop because I've been chatting with so many people every minute since, on Tumblr, LJ, FB, Twitter, googlechat and sometimes phone.

I'm working on a playlist of all the awesome videos that people shot, and listening to the two postcasts I participated on: Edition, which was a little silly and recorded in the hotel lobby on Sunday afternoon, and the much more serious Mugglenet Academia on fanfic & transformative works. Download and listen - they were both awesome experiences.

My photos are up over on facebook, and the entire Ascendio flickr pool is at divided into sections here. If you couldn't be there, we'll also have audio recordings online here (and we now have a package of all events which might be of interest to academics, universities, organizations, etc.). Individual sessions will be online shortly.

Now, speaking personally....

This was an awesome event. The entire Senior Staff - Flourish, Gwen, Amy, Femme, Alexa, Mary, Ailene, Dave, Bekki, Mallory, Anastasia, Noe, Zorb - and our awesome team members, including Chris Rankin and Lena Gabrielle and Vicki my saviour, as well as our awesome presenters & guests, plus the IQA and HPA - were brain-blowingly fantastic and seriously, there was nothing that went wrong that couldn't be fixed within about three minutes.

Even the rain the night of NoaTW disappeared quickly!

I...

I don't know what's going to happen next. We all went into this at least a little burned out - but at the moment, I don't know if it's the euphoria from the event itself or what, but...

So there's going to be talk about things beyond 2013 and if you're interested in talking, then let's talk. :D Personally, I won't work with Universal for a long time, if ever, for many reasons, but...

Ellipse.... Ellipse.... Ellipse...

I am ridiculously sad that I can't get to Lubricus, but there is no way I can go out of state between now and The Bar Mitzvah, but I am looking at MistiCon in New Hampshire in May, because I have to be in Philadelphia that Friday afternoon, so I may be able to manage a Thursday night/Friday morning a little further north. And Wincon is still on my agenda, but it entirely depends on Aaron's work schedule, so I won't know until late September. Also, the Vegas SPN con in March!

After Nimbus we didn't know when we'd all see each other again. These days, we know that even if it's not every year, it'll be every so often and sometimes more frequent than that. Fandom is here, fandom is changing and fandom is awesome.

If I didn't see you this weekend, you were missed (and I miss you still). If I did see you and glomp you and drink with you and possibly sing kareoke with you, then I miss you right now.

And I will see you soon.

The info I've been waiting for since APRIL is finally available!

Yes, Avengers will still be in theaters during Ascendio!

So, if you want to go with me on Wednesday the 11th at 12:30 pm (or possibly 6:10 pm if the midday one is totally impossible) please let me know! I don't yet know if it'll be playing on Sunday evening, and I don't think I can get away any other times but I really, really want to see it with (a) fangirls and (b) margaritas!!

Ascendio Programming Summaries in a Word Cloud
It's not a word cloud! It's a word hat, made up of the most popular words in the Ascendio formal programming session summaries. We're asking all the presenters to please click the button below to repost this - and include your session summaries (and times, and rooms) so everyone knows where to find you at Ascendio next month because O_O formal programming starts a month from today!

You can find the Programming Session grids here:
Thursday Quill Track |  Friday  |  Saturday  &  Sunday

There are so many different wonderful presentations planned for this year’s event that it’s going to be tough to figure out which sessions to attend, so we’ve created an Ascendio scheduling app using Guidebook; download yours here - it's free!

And don't forget about all our after-hours Meetups (Avengers! Sherlock! Hogwarts Houses! Cosplayers! Educators! Doll collectors! And many more!) and events like Night of a Thousand Wizards 2, where we return to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and get to hang out until 1 AM after all the Muggles have gone home (and no stadium presentations by Universal this time - instead, we go right into the park).

If you haven't registered yet, there's still time; online registration is open through June 25 and Day Passes will be available on-site.

See you next month at HPEF's eighth - and final - Harry Potter fan extravaganza!

Now, please, presenters and attendees - click the button below...

Also! Please, come see ME!

On Friday I'll be on a panel on How Fandom has Shaped Social Media Spaces with Femme, Aja and Casey Fiesler from 5 - 6:30 in  Venetian IV (and which I think may be followed by an Avengers Slash meetup (speaking of fandom and social media spaces)

And on Saturday, I'm on two panels - one with my son on Introducing Harry Potter to younger readers at 9:30 in Tuscan 1, and one at 3:30 in Tuscan III with Rachael Vaugn called How To Debate Clueless And Uninformed People About Transformative Works, or, El Tango de Roxanne. Here's part of the summary:

You see them on Twitter and tumblr and wordpress all the time... People who are convinced that they know everything about fanfiction and fanart and wrock and fan films and how they’re each a copyright violation through and through. They’re wrong, but how do you debate them?

I'm ridiculously excited about each of these sessions - and since registrations are still available (and we have this awesome hotel rate (it's about 1/3 cheaper than the Portofino's other rooms are that week)) I hope to see bunches of you there!

Applications are now open for the 2012 Eric Bowling Scholarship, which will provide one qualified individual with a Full registration for Ascendio, a ticket to Night of a Thousand Wizards 2 on July 12, $100 towards travel expenses and a mention in the Ascendio program.

We offered a similar scholarship to Infinitus, in the aftermath of Eric's sudden passing in December of 2009, and again, since we can't have him with us in person for Ascendio, some of the senior HPEF staff want to remember him by inviting someone to attend, as he cannot.

Please pass the information about the application & scholarship around; the scholarship is a terrific chance to be a part of an amazing Harry Potter fandom event.

Programming Session from Infinitus 2010Tomorrow's the deadline for programming submissions! Check out the Call for Proposals, and tell us what you want to talk about!

As at past HPEF events, almost all of our formal programming sessions are attendee-generated, which means that we ask you, the Ascendio attendee, to host discussions, lead round tables, and, if your academic or fannish interests lie in that direction, even present a paper about a specific Harry Potter-focused or -inspired topic. Past programming sessions have included Creating a Byronic Hero: Severus Snape and the Gothic Fathers of Harry PotterCreating Without Canon: Writing Next-Gen Fanfic; Norm-Formation, Inconsistency and the Rule of Law in the Wizarding WorldWhen Fans Become Activists, and more.

We've also been talking about possible Ascendio programming sessions here; topics people are tossing around include a session on Regulus Black, Snape/Hermione, Draco/Hermione, writing about the Next Generation, JK Rowling's women, telling stories and sharing feelings through icons and gifs, and how people are keeping the Harry Potter flame alive.
heidi: (Ascendio)
We're having a great discussion on Ascendio programming sessions that people want to present, be on a panel for, see others present or otherwise encourage here on our LJ. Please join the discussion - you can use OpenID, Twitter, Facebook or your Google ID, or post anonymously if you wish.

Remember, Ascendio's formal programming comes from our attendees, and we showcase what you want to see!

Comments are turned off over here, so we can keep the discussion going over there!

We've extended the Ascendio Programming Proposal Submission Deadline of Deadlineyness! It's a Leap Day thing, now!

As it always is at HPEF cons, Ascendio programming is by the attendees, for the attendees -- so we need YOU to submit proposals for our formal programming slate! We’re seeking proposals of all shapes and sizes, to discuss/probe issues in Harry Potter and beyond.

Our formal programming deadline has been pushed back to February 29, in order to give everyone a little more time to work out their schedules, topics and panels, BUT! All proposals submitted by the original deadline of February 1st will be considered by our vetting committee right away. Ascendio plans to begin accepting proposals in mid-February (while still allowing proposal submissions until February 29 -- we're nice like that! XD)

What kinds of things should you propose? Here are just some examples:

  • Content for our Quill Track: writing workshops, e-publishing how-tos, hot topics in publishing & YA.

  • Workshops, including but not limited to crafts, fanart & writing techniques (knitting, crocheting, drawing characters, jewelry making, scrap-booking...)

  • Discussions of fanfiction and shipping (both het & slash pairings)

  • The real-world implications of Harry Potter, transformative works and fan culture (LGBTQ, religion, politics, feminism, privilege, etc.!)

Want to know more? Check out the Call for Papers, or jump right here to submit your proposal!

And if you have any questions, you can always email us or ask us on Facebook , Twitter or here on LJ!

heidi: (Nimbus)
For posting to tumblr tomorrow, and I was looking for photos or ANYTHING from <lj user=flourish>'s Snape panel at Nimbus, and I found this:

It's hard to believe it, but eight months from now, Nimbus 2003 will be fandom history.

When the dust settles, what part will you have played?

We really need your help...

Are you convinced that your ship is true love... or do you think all ships should sink?

Are you in love with poor ickle misunderstood Draco Malfoy... or do you think he's a nasty little bugger?

Can you remember the Dark Ages of Harry Potter fandom... or are you an baby newbie?

Do you think Snape is a vampire? Do you think he's hot? Do you think he's just *greasy*?

We are looking for a Few Good Fans to talk to Other Fans at Nimbus about different aspects of the Harry Potter series. Just talk, in a moderated roundtable panel-sort-of-discussion. No academic credentials necessary. No strings attached. No catches you can't live with.

Who can sit on one of these panels? You can!

You don't have to run a website or write fanfic or run a marathon or do anything besides be a fan of the Harry Potter series. Hey... you can even be a lurker! We'd love to meet you!

The only requirement in order to be considered for this fun and historic happening is to be a registered attendee at Nimbus.

So if you began to go on one of your famous rants when you read one of the hot-button questions about... we're looking for you!

Yes, you! And you!

And you too!

The Nimbus Programming Committee would like *you* to serve on one of the following moderated fandom culture forum-style panels:

--Resolved: Can Draco Malfoy Be Redeemed?
--Once Upon a Time-Turner: The History of Harry Potter Fandom
--Slytherins, Smoke, and Shadows: The Secret Life of Severus Snape in Fanon

You will be required to do the following, if chosen to present on one of these teams:

a) Register for Nimbus. You must be registered for Nimbus on or before Wednesday, January 15, 2003, in order to participate.

b) Prepare a 500-1000 word "opening statement" on your chosen topic, with examples from accepted Harry Potter canon sources. ("Canon" for our purposes will be defined at a later date.)

c) Be willing to make a positive contribution to Nimbus!

Or... if you have another idea, you may...

Propose another topic as a panel, paper, or other presentation!

You know, those panels could all exist at Ascendio, too - content obviously updated, but the same titles could definitely fly. I am laughing hysterically at the reference to "the dark ages of the Harry Potter fandom" - especially when anyone who was a newbie in 2003 is a serious oldbie by now. And the dark ages meant 1999 - maybe 2000 when WB was sending C&D letters to kids who were using Harry Potter character names in domain names.

And wow, Wednesday, January 15 2003 (my birthday! I was so young!) turned out to be the day that we found out the title of Book Five, which is really weird to look back at. Not only did we plan 99.9% of Nimbus without knowing the content of Book Five (hence the Marauders theme, intro panel, etc.) we actually did all the initial planning without knowing the release date, or the title!

Weird, ironic and neat.

And if you have any photos from any Snapey moments at Nimbus, please zap them over to me or share the urls so we can add them to the picspam tomorrow. We have stuff from every other con, but digital cameras weren't very widespread in 2003... Ancient times, that.

1. LOVED Supernatural last night. Solid, good episode that worked for me. May post something spoilery later but for now, just looking forward to the final pre-hellatus episode so I can finalize my gift for [livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_xmas (SQUEE).

2. Went to the Miami Book Fair today - hung out briefly with Lev Grossman, who some of you may remember from Azkatraz or Comic Con & who's coming back for Ascendio (and probably bringing some other writers along, too). Also managed to snag a 1st printing Book Club edition of Sorcerer's Stone for ten bucks - it's supposedly worth anything form fifty to five hundred dollars, depending on the mood of the buyer. Still! More than ten!

3. My grandma - the one who works as my bookkeeper, who's 93 and still drives to work every day - fainted in the office yesterday, and within seven hours, they had put in a pacemaker and she was sent home (well, to my parents') today. Amazing woman, amazing medicine.

4. Of the four things I requested for Yuletide (Twin Peaks, Soapdish, Pumped Up Kicks (the Foster the People song) and The Eight - I am the only person requesting three of them. No points to anyone who knows which one has more than one request. ;)

5. DH is back with groceries - off to unpack and cook!

If you are interested in a CHAIR-LEVEL POSITION at Ascendio 2012, and you have not already gotten in contact with [[livejournal.com profile] flourish], now would be the appropriate time to do so.

Even if you are not interested in a chair-level position, if you would like to volunteer your time and abilities before the convention itself, please send a message to ascendio2012 at gmail dotcom (yeah, yeah, I still haven't set up the email addresses).

I am particularly interested in anybody who would like to be a point person for accessibility, including both (1) the accessibility of the site and (2) the accessibility of the website. You can do one or both or whatever.

It's going to be an amazing event - a lot smaller and more intimate than Infinitus, and while it'll still be at Universal, we're moving to the Portofino Bay Resort, which is gorgeous and very Beauxbatons, with natural light in some of the ballrooms, a fabulous courtyard and a very Diagon-Alley-ish area, too.
