For posting to tumblr tomorrow, and I was looking for photos or ANYTHING from <lj user=flourish>'s Snape panel at Nimbus, and I found this:

It's hard to believe it, but eight months from now, Nimbus 2003 will be fandom history.

When the dust settles, what part will you have played?

We really need your help...

Are you convinced that your ship is true love... or do you think all ships should sink?

Are you in love with poor ickle misunderstood Draco Malfoy... or do you think he's a nasty little bugger?

Can you remember the Dark Ages of Harry Potter fandom... or are you an baby newbie?

Do you think Snape is a vampire? Do you think he's hot? Do you think he's just *greasy*?

We are looking for a Few Good Fans to talk to Other Fans at Nimbus about different aspects of the Harry Potter series. Just talk, in a moderated roundtable panel-sort-of-discussion. No academic credentials necessary. No strings attached. No catches you can't live with.

Who can sit on one of these panels? You can!

You don't have to run a website or write fanfic or run a marathon or do anything besides be a fan of the Harry Potter series. Hey... you can even be a lurker! We'd love to meet you!

The only requirement in order to be considered for this fun and historic happening is to be a registered attendee at Nimbus.

So if you began to go on one of your famous rants when you read one of the hot-button questions about... we're looking for you!

Yes, you! And you!

And you too!

The Nimbus Programming Committee would like *you* to serve on one of the following moderated fandom culture forum-style panels:

--Resolved: Can Draco Malfoy Be Redeemed?
--Once Upon a Time-Turner: The History of Harry Potter Fandom
--Slytherins, Smoke, and Shadows: The Secret Life of Severus Snape in Fanon

You will be required to do the following, if chosen to present on one of these teams:

a) Register for Nimbus. You must be registered for Nimbus on or before Wednesday, January 15, 2003, in order to participate.

b) Prepare a 500-1000 word "opening statement" on your chosen topic, with examples from accepted Harry Potter canon sources. ("Canon" for our purposes will be defined at a later date.)

c) Be willing to make a positive contribution to Nimbus!

Or... if you have another idea, you may...

Propose another topic as a panel, paper, or other presentation!

You know, those panels could all exist at Ascendio, too - content obviously updated, but the same titles could definitely fly. I am laughing hysterically at the reference to "the dark ages of the Harry Potter fandom" - especially when anyone who was a newbie in 2003 is a serious oldbie by now. And the dark ages meant 1999 - maybe 2000 when WB was sending C&D letters to kids who were using Harry Potter character names in domain names.

And wow, Wednesday, January 15 2003 (my birthday! I was so young!) turned out to be the day that we found out the title of Book Five, which is really weird to look back at. Not only did we plan 99.9% of Nimbus without knowing the content of Book Five (hence the Marauders theme, intro panel, etc.) we actually did all the initial planning without knowing the release date, or the title!

Weird, ironic and neat.

And if you have any photos from any Snapey moments at Nimbus, please zap them over to me or share the urls so we can add them to the picspam tomorrow. We have stuff from every other con, but digital cameras weren't very widespread in 2003... Ancient times, that.

As we approach the 10th anniversary of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, it's time to reflect on all the Harry Potter phenomenon – books, films, and fandom – has become.

It began with a prophecy...and in 2007 the legendary tale will come full circle. Thus, HP Education Fanon, Inc. is very pleased to announce:

Prophecy 2007: From Hero to Legend will take place in Toronto, Canada, August 2-5, 2007. Hotel and registration information will be available soon.

Our first international event, Prophecy 2007 will encompass a number of elements, including formal programming with a focus on the development of the series and the fandom over the last ten years, along with HPEF traditions such as wizard sport, a quest, a gallery, film viewings, and some new surprises, such as the Hall of Reflection, where attendees can reflect on the past ten years with Harry Potter.

Our principal organisers for Prophecy 2007 are Vishaya Naidoo, Suzanne Fossey, Madeleine Beaupre, and Camille Kelly. Additional information about volunteering is available at the Yahoo!Group, http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Prophecy_Headquarters/

Members of the Prophecy 2007 team will be at Lumos to answer questions, accept registrations, and take volunteer contact information. Join us to remember, to reflect, and to realise what is yet to come!

Prophecy 2007: From Hero to Legend is produced under the auspices of HP Education Fanon, Inc., an educational non-profit (501(c)3) organisation committed to producing high-quality events that combine a professional and academic focus with the spirit of the Harry Potter series for scholar and fan alike. This event is unofficial and is not endorsed by Warner Bros., the Harry Potter book publishers, or JK Rowling or her literary agents.

LiveJournal claims that one of our staffers sent unsolicited email that somehow linked back to the journal content. However, they suggested that we set up a new journal, which we have done:

Nimbus - 2003.

Go make a new friend if you want to subscribe to the updates.

Please go and vote in our poll about the FictionAlley birthday party on Friday night at the Copa Banana, which is expected to go from 9pm to 1am (but which might start at 8:30 - still undecided).

FYI - this is the only scheduled event for Friday night. The movies are on Saturday night.

I just got a fan letter from Jim Dale.

Sort of.

Gail Bohacek and I wrote a FILK to the tune of The Museum Song from Barnum, and posted it to HPfGU to plug the launch of the programming page (you can also find the filk here) and I bcc:ed Jim Dale on the posting.

I'd exchanged emails with him earlier this year, inviting him to Nimbus, but his schedule was still unclear for the summer, so he wasn't sure he'd be able to make it - he still isn't sure, actually - so he did have a bit of knowledge of what Nimbus is going to be.

This afternoon, he sent me an email back, showing his good sense of humor and appreciating the homage.

Am fangirling!!!

Now... if only I could figure out how to filk something to Pasamaquady...

Until October 31, you can still do an early bird registration for Nimbus - 2003, the first international Harry Potter event.

To bring you up to speed, Nimbus - 2003 will take place from July 17 - 20, 2003, at the Walt Disney World Swan & Dolphin Hotel in Orlando, Florida. We've obtained a terrific rate at the hotel - $139 (plus tax and resort fee) per room, per night, for up to 4 adults in a room, and we're finalizing arrangements for discounted airfare as well!

The event will feature discussions of Harry Potter canon and fanon,(including topics like the role of authority in the series; race, class, and other social issues; Rowling's usage of myths, folk tales and
legends; fanficcing an "incomplete" canon; the use of perspective in the novels and in fanfic; justice and legality in the wizarding world; drawing recognizable characters; and more - as well as a Keynote Address by Judith Krug, director of the Office of Intellectual Freedom for the American Library Association, and at least one showing of both Harry Potter films.

Further to the list of topics above, if you want to do a presentation on one of those topics - or any other! - our proposal/panel/presentation submission form is open - you can find it here and submit a summary of a presentation right online!

Registration at the $99.75 (ninety nine and three quarters dollars) rate will be available through January 15, 2003, but early bird registrants who sign up before October 31, 2002 (US Eastern Standard Time) will also get a special early bird t-shirt too.

As many of you know, I'm working on the committee for the HP2003 Symposium and we've had a very weird question from a possible committee member that I just can't suss out.

We have planned to try and get corporate sponsorship to cover some breaks or continental breakfast for all attendees - bagels, danish, coffee, iced tea, fruit, cookies - all depends on the time of day. She says that we shouldn't think to do something like that, but instead should have a suite for attendees.

What is the difference? What am I not seeing? Why would having food in a separate room somehow be a better idea?

Any insight?
