Ah, smog

So, I heard it rained in LA today? Thunder and all that good stuff?

We missed it, but we sorta flew over it. Boat docked this morning in Vancouver and omg the six of us trying to take our 12 check-thru bags and our 5 carry-ons on two carts, with two kidlings in strollers, from check in (where they'd lost aaron's reservation so we had to re-buy it, meh, and will tomorrow begin fighting with Alaska & American Airlines) through the Customs thing where we got to finally check our bags was just miserable, but at least the line moved quicjly enough.

I'm off to San Diego tomorrow and come back to LA tuesday but I fear all the people I'd ask to meet me at Disneyland on my way back will be in Vegas or en route to it. Then Friday morning I get to Lumos - the first thing I'm going to is the How To on Podcasting, where [livejournal.com profile] robertstandring, [livejournal.com profile] emmagrant01 and Rachel from Snapecast will be tutorializing on podcasting and fic-recording - it's in Marquis 1 from 10-10:50. Then I'll be in the FA/HPANA booth until my 1pm presentation.

If you want me to be able to reach you, post a reply with your mobile number and/or since I've missed so many announcements of when various of you are presenting or what you're attending Friday & Saturday. Comments are screened but if you're ok with me unscreening yours, just say so.

Catie is asleep, the boys are in camp, and we're about an hour from the Hubbard Glacier, so I'm about to head upstairs with Baby, a blanket and some hot chocolate to watch the ice bergs and look for whales. I saw one yesterday coming toward the top of the water and poking a bit of back out - it was unreal.

I'm in a bit of a state regarding something Lumos-ish - two of my co-presenters at the legal issues have had to bow out - Leeanna has to (*has to*!!) go to Hawaii for something work-related and [livejournal.com profile] elfundeb has a very important sports-related thing for one of her kids.

So I am sorta kinda desperate for a co-presenter at this point - any attorneys or paralegals who are attending Lumos and have any background in tax, internet, nonprofit and/or corporate law issues are asked to please email me at heidi @heidi8.com if you're able to help at all on the Saturday panel. Accountants are also Greatly Appreciated. If you are in - or can get to - the Las Vegas area, and a lawyer, para or accountant, and not already planning on attending Lumos, but want to come on Saturday and present and then enjoy some of the event, also, please let me know.

And crossposting, forwarding, reporting of and passing on this post? Also very appreciated.

[livejournal.com profile] saeva, who was our Blaise-panelist on the "How Did HBP Joss the Characterizations?" panel, isn't going to be able to do it because of health issues. If you wrote/drew Blaise pre-HBP and are interested in taking that seat on the panel, please let me know asap!

HP Education Fanon, Inc. is thrilled to announce that our website is now live and available at http://hpeducationfanon.org/ for your perusal.

It has a collection of links to past and future events, including [profile] prophecy2007 and, of course, next month's Lumos 2006, and information for those who are interested in bidding on events for 2008 and beyond.

Thanks to everyone who made this possible, and especially those who have contributed to my understanding of server-side includes, so I can edit and update the thing!

Yesterday, before my computer was abruptly and accidentally shut down, I posted to [profile] fiction_alley about our contest where two people can each win one ticket to the August 2 JKR reading in New York City - you can read my original post here or visit the contest page itself here.

And lastly, FictionAlley and HPANA are thrilled to announce that sign-ups are now open for The Creativity Booth at Lumos! If you're registered to attend Lumos, we'd love to have you take a seat in the Creativity Booth, which will be situation in the Vendor Room; you'll be part of the booth staff for a one-hour time-slot, and your fellow attendees will be able to request a drabble, a sketch, a filk, or a bit of meta/debate from you. We have almost 100 slots available for artists, writers and filkers, so we're hoping that a lot of you are able to take an hour and join in the fun!

As some of you remember, we sponsored some of the booths at The Witching Hour, and it was fun for the attendees and the creative people staffing the booths, so we wanted to do it again! (And again, and again, and again!)

ETA: Forgot some spellcast stuff!

The staff of SpellCast is seeking people to fill some positions hidden behind the LJ cut:

And, of course, our SpellCast logo contest is still going on. Learn more here!

If you are interested in applying for any of these positions, use your computer's recording equipment and send a voice mail to Skype username "fictionalley" with the following information:

- A brief introduction of yourself.
- How you became interested and involved with the Harry Potter fandom.
- Which position you're interested in and why you'd be the person for the job.

If you are applying for a crew (off-air) position, you can also submit your application to our Skype account using your telephone. The number to call in the United States is 303 800 4342 and in the United Kingdom you can reach us at 0161 408 3427. We ask that all applicants who are applying for cast (on-air) positions not use their telephones but their computer's recording equipment, because via the sound quality suffers via the telephone.

If you have any questions, comments or problems, please don't hesitate to drop us an e-mail at spellcastfa at gmail dot com. Thank you for your interest and we hope to hear from you soon.

Any questions about any of the above? Feel free to ask!

As we approach the 10th anniversary of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, it's time to reflect on all the Harry Potter phenomenon – books, films, and fandom – has become.

It began with a prophecy...and in 2007 the legendary tale will come full circle. Thus, HP Education Fanon, Inc. is very pleased to announce:

Prophecy 2007: From Hero to Legend will take place in Toronto, Canada, August 2-5, 2007. Hotel and registration information will be available soon.

Our first international event, Prophecy 2007 will encompass a number of elements, including formal programming with a focus on the development of the series and the fandom over the last ten years, along with HPEF traditions such as wizard sport, a quest, a gallery, film viewings, and some new surprises, such as the Hall of Reflection, where attendees can reflect on the past ten years with Harry Potter.

Our principal organisers for Prophecy 2007 are Vishaya Naidoo, Suzanne Fossey, Madeleine Beaupre, and Camille Kelly. Additional information about volunteering is available at the Yahoo!Group, http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Prophecy_Headquarters/

Members of the Prophecy 2007 team will be at Lumos to answer questions, accept registrations, and take volunteer contact information. Join us to remember, to reflect, and to realise what is yet to come!

Prophecy 2007: From Hero to Legend is produced under the auspices of HP Education Fanon, Inc., an educational non-profit (501(c)3) organisation committed to producing high-quality events that combine a professional and academic focus with the spirit of the Harry Potter series for scholar and fan alike. This event is unofficial and is not endorsed by Warner Bros., the Harry Potter book publishers, or JK Rowling or her literary agents.

I've set up a poll on FictionAlley to see if anyone wants to come to a fandom get-together in the Rockefeller Center area on August 1 and/or 2 - you can go and vote here. And if you're reading this and not a registered user of FA, then (a) register :) and (b) please come anyway - I'll be posting location info here in my LJ and at [livejournal.com profile] fiction_alley as well as on FA itself.

I know there's an Au Bon Pain nearby, but if anyone has any recs for locations, that would be great. Nonpricey with alcohol availability is probably ideal, but without alcohol is viable too (see: Au Bon Pain).

And if anyone has any icons, I'd love to gack, please?

Just to keep my life organized...

[Poll #728592]

And a very happy mother's day to all the mommies here on the flist - may you have a little time to yourself today, for relaxation, newspaper-reading, playing online, watching the Cybermen episode from last night (which I can't do as my internet at home is still down, although it's likely to be fixed later today), etc.

Sigh, I've watched The Doctor Dances at least three times this weekend already, and watched TGITF again yesterday, and I think I'm going to end up (meep!) getting some Dr Who icons. I watched it a bit back in the early 80s - the boys a year ahead of me were very into it, so I caught intermittent episodes back then - but I was just a smidge too young to enjoy it as much as I enjoyed the Tomorrow People (same crap special effects, not quite as good plotting, right?) so I never got into it. I saw the lame-ish Milennium episode with Aaron, and have just absorbed all the squee from the flist these last few months, and my brain has utterly capitulated.

Harry saw some of School Reunion with me, and he's obsessed now with K-9. Are there any recs for specific older episodes - what was it, Doctor #5? 6? - that I can watch with him that aren't too scary (ie age-appropriate for a 7 year old) which have a good amount of Tin Dog?

And are there any K-9 action figures still rumbling around the shops?

FictionAlley is very interested in having some space in the Vendor Room so we can sell our Katie O'Brien Scholarship bracelets but we don't want to have to operate a vendor table for the whole of the event, as required, and we also would rather not spend the whole $500 out of our own pockets. Are there any other fansites/communities/groups that are interested in sharing the cost of a table, at an evenly divided cost (ie four other sites come in, it's $100 each, nine other sites, and it's $50 each) or at a pay-for-a-few-hours basis? Let me know by posting here, or emailing me at heidi @ heidi8.com - or buzz me if you have questions. I'm also on YM at heiditandy and AIM at travelingheidi.
