I've set up a poll on FictionAlley to see if anyone wants to come to a fandom get-together in the Rockefeller Center area on August 1 and/or 2 - you can go and vote here. And if you're reading this and not a registered user of FA, then (a) register :) and (b) please come anyway - I'll be posting location info here in my LJ and at [livejournal.com profile] fiction_alley as well as on FA itself.

I know there's an Au Bon Pain nearby, but if anyone has any recs for locations, that would be great. Nonpricey with alcohol availability is probably ideal, but without alcohol is viable too (see: Au Bon Pain).

And if anyone has any icons, I'd love to gack, please?

Just to keep my life organized...

[Poll #728592]

And a very happy mother's day to all the mommies here on the flist - may you have a little time to yourself today, for relaxation, newspaper-reading, playing online, watching the Cybermen episode from last night (which I can't do as my internet at home is still down, although it's likely to be fixed later today), etc.

Sigh, I've watched The Doctor Dances at least three times this weekend already, and watched TGITF again yesterday, and I think I'm going to end up (meep!) getting some Dr Who icons. I watched it a bit back in the early 80s - the boys a year ahead of me were very into it, so I caught intermittent episodes back then - but I was just a smidge too young to enjoy it as much as I enjoyed the Tomorrow People (same crap special effects, not quite as good plotting, right?) so I never got into it. I saw the lame-ish Milennium episode with Aaron, and have just absorbed all the squee from the flist these last few months, and my brain has utterly capitulated.

Harry saw some of School Reunion with me, and he's obsessed now with K-9. Are there any recs for specific older episodes - what was it, Doctor #5? 6? - that I can watch with him that aren't too scary (ie age-appropriate for a 7 year old) which have a good amount of Tin Dog?

And are there any K-9 action figures still rumbling around the shops?

K-9 was Doctor #4 and my memory is that most of them were fairly age-appropriate for a 7-year-old. I say this because I started watching DW when I was about 7 and my first Doctor was 4 ::grin::

Off the top of my head, I don't remember which ones have a lot of K-9, though.

K9 was one of Four's travelling companions, and I reckon most of his episodes would be suitable. The Pirate Planet might appeal, because it also has a robot parrot(!), and I also like Destiny of the Daleks, because hey, Daleks.

Glad you're liking the new series. It is fab.

K-9 was introduced in 'the Invisible Enemy', which was not one of the greatest or worst Doctor Who stories, but featured one of the most memorably bad Doctor Who monsters ever. Even now, my brother and I only have to utter the words "the giant prawn" to each other to set each other off laughing. I liked it when I was eleven(?) though, so odds are that your seven-year-old would enjoy it, too.

K-9 stayed around as a regular companion for about three years, so he was in most of the episodes of the last few seasons of Tom Baker (Doctor 4), though sometimes they just left K-9 in the TARDIS if they were visiting a swamp world or something similar. Overall, the later Tom Baker seasons were more light-hearted and had less in the way of horror and violence than Tom's first three seasons (because of a change of production team) so most of the episodes featuring K-9 aren't any more scary than Doctor Who in general.

Well, he can handle Power Rangers, so the Tom Baker episodes should be viable. Squee.

The Doctor Dances kinda freaked me out. But then I watched it all alone in the dark as all good sci-fi is supposed to be viewed.

Happy Mother's Day to you as well!

Oh, meh, I don't think that would've done well for me. But the thing is, I watched it wiht closed captioning on and the sound off, so I didn't get the scary woo-woo music - I was with Catie and it was 2 AM - which I think mitigates it a bit?

Happy Mother's Day right back to you!

I might be in Miami next March: that is if the Renaissance Society of America accepts the panel of which I'm part. Hoping they do since I a) have never been to Miami and b) would be really ready for someplace warmer after three unrelenting months of -30 degrees that is winter in my neck of the woods.

Phoenix Rising - I'll be there with other The Quidditch Pitch staff

OotP - Probably see you, but it depends upon other plans I might have. That's more than a year away, so things are a bit fluid :)

Reunion in Philly - I live in Philly :)

Even if I don't see you in a fandom context before then (which would be difficult, as I'm not going to Lumos or the thing in NYC in August, and am moving to England in October), hopefully I'll see you at the wedding!

I love Doctor #9 but The Empty Child freaked us all right out. The Doctor Dances was GREAT, though in the back of my head it seemed a little melancholy (concerning Doctor & Rose) - an hour later I found out about #10. ::sigh::

I found great Dr Who icons conveniently located in an LJ comm:

Actually, I wanted to ask you about Disney.

James and I are thinking of bringing Jamie next year (he'll be 4 in August, dear GOD.) and I was wondering if you ever brought Cate. And if you did, did she actually have fun or was she just hot and miserable?

Jamie's going for sure, we've started a little Disney Account (Mickey Mouse cookie jar that Jamie puts $2 a day in), but I was wondering about Bella.

What do you think?

We brought Catie last year in September for two days when we fled Hurricane Rita, and we're taking her back next week. We brought Jon at 9 months, and again at about 30 months, among other times. Harry's first trip was just before he was six months, then again at 14 months, and this trip will be, IIRC, his fifteenth? sixteenth?

Anyhow, we've *never* had a problem bringing little ones, and we've always had wonderful fun. If you can stay a day longer than you think you need, and go in the autumn, it won't be frenzied, you can take everything at a moderate pace, and really enjoy yourselves. But I think Bella's a little too young for this but I really recommend this, or the Winnie the Pooh breakfast if you're early risers - you get into the park an hour before it opens!

Star Wars Weekends ROCK.

I'm planning on coming over for Star Wars weekends. If you are, too, we should try to stand in line together. Send me an e-mail if you want to hang out. brcowan@hotmail.com I'll send you my cell number and we'll make plans.

Oh, and if Carrie Fisher is there again, I am NOT standing in line to watch her drink-induced scribbling again. But some of the other stars are most excellent people, so I always try to go!

Nothing concrete for July, except there's a strong possibility of a NYC premiere for OotP then. Not definite, though.
