No, there was nothing in the water when we got together back in December, I swear! It's just a coincidence that [livejournal.com profile] deirdre_c and I posted Sammy-centric vids with an effing theme this week!

My If You Seek Sammy (to Britney's If You Seek Amy) was posted in celebration of Happy Unattached Drifter's Christmas Valentine's Day, and [livejournal.com profile] deirdre_c's brilliantly clever and epic Fudge You (to Cee Lo's F-- You) went up the next day.

Must be something about this week that puts the theme into our minds. Because it wasn't the tequila!

In other news, I'm sick with a headcold and sore throat, and while taking my daughter to tae kwon do this afternoon, I tripped in the parking lot and ripped one knee while re-damaging the meniscus in the other one. Time for some ice and R&R and a look at some of the articles about the Issues with the new Wonder Woman script and the possibility of a spinoff from Castle starring Teh Pasdar (oh, I HOPE!).

Quick poll! Involving things I am doing this summer! Because...

This morning, I found out that the wonderful people at NOW! That's What I Call Music rereleased the absolutely adorable original "NOW! That's What I Call Music, which I first purchased in LP form at the record store at Aventura Mall circa December, 1983. I bought it for Duran Duran and Tracey Ullman, but it may've been the first time I heard The Cure and Simple Minds outside of the occasional glimpse on Mtv.

If you’re on NOW That’s What I Call Music!, you’re a hitmaker. You performed a song that resonated with the public; that’s all that matters.
Then! That's What They Called Music (The AV Club)

One of the things that's never really bothered me about the HP films, but that I've always been aware of, is that while the films are "set" in this millennium, the books themselves actually take place in the 1990s. It's rarely relevant - maybe when Dudley gets his playstation (months before it's actually released in the UK but whatever) but it's Something Of Note, at least to me.

I've wanted to do some sort of wrap-up project as we approach the release of the last HP films in the next few months, and since I've done so few HP vids, that's what I feel compelled to do - a set of eight vids - one for each film - using a song from the year each book begins: 1991 for PS/SS, 1992 for CoS, etc. (Yes, I know that PS/SS really begins in 1981 but still.)

So I spent this morning talking with [livejournal.com profile] jlh and looking back at the original NOW! compilations for each year in the '90s, then the "Millennium Collection" that the released later in the decade which had some of the same songs, and some different ones, and for most of the years, I can't decide on which song to use!

So please, help me pick! )

In other news, I managed to (a) submit FictionAlley in the Pepsi Get Refreshed! Challenge and we'll find out in about four weeks if we're able to be included in the November voting, and (b) get a reservation at the Marriott for Dragon*Con next September, so I can go and be all PR-ish for Ascendio, and see people and have fun and hang out, yay!

Also, tonight? SHOW!

Off to take my sister to the airport....

This. Yay for vidding, Firefly and Joss!

This. Yay for candy/LOTR!

This. (Thanks, [livejournal.com profile] praetorianguard!) And yay books!

This. (Thanks,[livejournal.com profile] danijo!) Huzzah for the 80s!

It's Friday! Something must be terrific, interesting, inspirational, fascinating or otherwise nifty for you right now. And there's probably something that's on the "less than" side, too.

ETA: For me, the non-nifty is gacked from DailyKos:
The watchdogs at Florida Citizens for Science find that Taylor County[, Florida] has passed a resolution:

[W]e are requesting that the State Board of Education direct the Florida Department of Education to revise/edit the new Sunshine State Standards for Science so that evolution is presented as one of several theories as to how the universe was formed.

Stupid people, get out of my state. I don't actually care if people choose to believe in creationism or intelligent design, but they should at least understand that the Big Bang theory deals with the creation of the universe, and evolution is a completely different concept.

Elvis-lution, on the other hand? Works for everyone! [/mojo nixon][/end ETA]

So...

Not one but two polls! The first asks what's thrilling you now, and your answers will be shared with the class. Tell about a community, a song, a film, a book, a food, a page on the internet, youtube vid, shiny thing - anything you want (although please warn if you're linking to something that's not work safe or something with spoilers for unaired eps of tv shows).

The second asks what's,well, not thrilling. And what you answer there is for my eyes only, so feel free to wibble, rant, grieve or show me the website, video clip, image - whatever - that you hate most.

heidi: (All I Want for Christmas Is You)
It's been a very vidding week for me - I showed some friends my Harry Potter Christmas video to All I Want for Christmas, and today was the reveal-day for the vid I made for [livejournal.com profile] titti last week as a teaser gift in [livejournal.com profile] spn_holidays - All I Want for Christmas, Supernatural-style (again using the My Chemical Romance version of the song).

All I Want for Christmas Is You All I Want for Christmas Is You
Title: All I Want for Christmas Is You
Performed by: My Chemical Romance
Fandom: Supernatural
Rating: PG-13, just like the show
Pairing: Sam/Dean
Available at: YouTube and for download on Megaupload.
Summary: Spoilers for SPN 3.08. It's a very supernatural Christmas, and Sam realizes that all he wants for Christmas is...
Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] cathybites for the gorgeous dvd cover to the left!

So many thanks and sparkles of appreciation to [livejournal.com profile] wendywoowho, [livejournal.com profile] cedarlibrarian and [livejournal.com profile] gwendolyngrace for beta comments!

Today, we avoided stores of all types, and started a new Tandy Family Tradition for December 24 - we went to the local bowling alley and everyone from Catie to Aaron had a terrific time bowling a few frames and enjoying the chicken skewers and home-style potato chips they serve. I think we might do it every year, unless we can convince the local JCC to rent the whole place out next year for the whole of Christmas Day. The kids may go see The Waterhorse tomorrow; otherwise it'll be a day of friends coming over to wii and bake brownies and watch a few Disney films.

Who's going to be around tomorrow? Would people be interested in some sort of round-robin/drabble/drawble/quickvid thing tomorrow?

heidi: (Deathly Hallows)
Via [livejournal.com profile] titti - the Observer has an article about Christopher Little (JKR's agent) and in it, they transcribe the words at the start of Chapter 1. It's about 2/3 of the way through the article.

I know I said I didn't want spoilers - and I wouldn't read a paraphrase of those lines if someone paid me a million dollars, and I wouldn't want to see anything other than the absolute start of the book (ie the first sentences, or the first chapter, followed by the second, etc. etc.).

But back when GoF came out, Newsweek featured it on the cover, and had the entire first chapter of the novel printed in its pages - I read it days before the book itself came out, and that didn't spoil me, because it was directly from JKR.

I recognize that others consider that sort of thing spoilery, though, so I won't post any of that actual content here - and no, I don't want to see the chapter titles - I plan to ignore the ToC in the book! - but yeah.

So I've read it.

Want more.

And a poll because I want to know how you feel today, knowing that for those of you reading this who're in HP, you'll never wake up on a Sumday morning again without knowing how the HP series ends... )
heidi: (Books by Copperbadge)
So, recent discussions about readings of the HP series have brought to my attention the fact that a lot of people here may not have read the two 2001 schoolbooks that JKR wrote for Comic Relief UK. In a few days, I'll explain more of the why behind this post, but I don't want to skew the results, so I won't at this point. If you've read the six HP books, or regularly read HP fanfic, I'd appreciate it if you took this poll:
