No, the dream isn't complete - there's still work to do for everyone. But we can do as dreamers do, and keep dreaming and keep working and keep living and make this country what it can be.
The BBC found a clip of Dr King in 1964 talking about how America could have a black president in under 40 years. Prescient and fascinating.
I am so excited to hear Obama's speech today - I'll be in a classroom of 9 and 10 year olds, across the courtyard from the room I sat in on this day in 1981, watching the Reagan inauguration. I remember that they handed out flags to everyone, rolled the TV in, and we watched - but I can't tell you a thing about the speech. No, what I remember strongly is the statement just after his speech that the hostages had been released from Iran and were being flown home.
I wonder what my son will remember from today, 28 years from now. I have a hunch he'll remember something from Obama's speech. Kudos, though, to the NY Times for finding two poems written by Barack Obama 28 years ago in Occidental College's poetry magazine. I wonder if he's written any since those days - the one about his grandfather is intense.
