Oh, it is shiny!

Sorry I'm being spammity today, and it seems to be mostly musicish stuff, but it seems to be a good day for mobile music and other fun things.

visual voicemail - GSM+EDGE - wifi - bluetooth - quad band is what Techdigest.tv is reporting.

Any info about colours yet?

ETA: MacRumorsLive has more info and amazing pics but their server seems to be getting innundated. I'm trying to gack an image or two to mirror...

Update from ShinyShiny.tv, who are SO on the ball in Vegas this week:
They've got to be kidding, right? The likes of Nokia might announce their phones months and months before they hit the stores, but Apple usually starts shipping its gear almost straight away. So the news that the iPhone isn't going to be out in the UK until Q4 (and not out in the US till June) is almost too strange to comprehend. Clearly, Jobs is confident that no phone competitor is going to manage to produce something more exciting in the interim, but keeping everyone hanging on like this could be a big mistake.

Having said that, the other alternative is that we're all just going to be whipping ourselves up into a frenzy of anticipation for the next 9 months, screeching with joy at every titbit of information (just like we all wet ourselves everytime anyone mentioned the Wii) and then iPhone will sell out in half a day, leaving most of us iPhone-less till 2008.

The 4GB iPhone is going to be available in the US exclusively with Cingular $499 on a two-year contract, and the 8GB will cost $599. No news who's going to be carrying it in the UK. Hopefully someone who's got a decent web tariff so that we can all actually afford to use the thing after forking out whatever enormous sum this thing will go for over here.

I need this so much I can hardly stand it. I think it is about time to renew my Cingular contract, too. Wahoo!

Ah, so many fond memories of my uncle's 512. Ah, so many fond memories of our old Mac Plus, which is still at my parents' house and which still works. Ah, little old Macs. :)

I remember awaiting System Seven. And Oscar in the trash can, singing.

And if the mac plus ever stops working, you can turn it into a fish tank.

Oh, I remember both so well.... :) Did you ever have the Talking Moose?

Yes. If it ever stops working, it will be a fish tank. And I'll get a clown fish and a blue tang. :)

I loved the Moose. I remember changing all the sounds for everything to something that I obviously thought was Funny At The Time, but I have no recollection at all anymore as to what exactly that was.
And it was all black and white! Hee!

For some reason, the Moose phrase I remember best is, "You are getting sleeeeeeeepy. Your eyelids are growing heavier and heavier," spoken, of course, like the computer would say it. ;)

I still end up playing with all the system voices. Looks like I'm not the only one, if the program I was playing with last night (http://casirafics.livejournal.com/339895.html) is any indication. :)

*sigh* If only I didn't hate Cingular and think VZW was much better...

Didn't they just merge anyway? I thought AT&T, Cingular & Verizon merged?

AT&T and Cingular merged, but Verizon is still its own entity. Sadly.

It isn't coming out until JUNE which gives everyone some lovely time to (a) save and (b) finish up their current phone contracts!

My biggest concern is less what the thing costs up front than what the data service is going to run. If it's like Cingular's other smartphone plans, the data alone will cost a good $30 a month - so by the time the smoke clears, you're looking at $80 or so per month.

That said, the device itself isn't appreciably bigger than other bar-type smartphones I've used (SonyEricsson P800, Nokia 6620) and is of course radically thinner and more capable (WiFi! 2 MP camera! True un-proxied HTML browsing!) than anything I've ever seen. Or as my buddy Ray said at the keynote, "Steve Jobs is puttin' money in a brotha's pocket." (Check AAPL if you don't believe him.)

Yeah, I'll definitely be lining up for it, pending approval per Wife. ;]

I think Steve can be safely confident that no one will manage to build something better than the iphone, even if it takes him 2 years to get the thing out. I mean, they've had 7 years to come up with an mp3 player that beats the ipod, I can't imagine anyone coming up with such a slick operating system.

I'm definitely intrigued, if only from the OMGITMUSTBEMINE perspective. I do wish that the phone came with a Verizon option, as Cingular has somewhat spotty reception in some of the parts of San Francisco where I often find myself. And, of course, I'm currently only 4 months into a 2-year cell phone contract, but that will give Apple a chance to work out any bugs in the intial release before I get around to buying it.

And a full-blown web browser would be really nice. I've gotten used to Blazer on my Treo, but it ain't the same.
