...suitcase of memories, time after...
I was clearing off an old desktop computer - the one I used from 2002 through 2006 - and I found something I didn't realise I still had.
One of the first trailers for Harry Potter & the Philosopher's Stone, circa Spring, 2001. It was so early, we still didn't have a release date (it ended up coming out in November, 2001) and it was our first glimpse into WB's version of the wizarding world.
I put it up on YouTube yesterday for archival purposes, and
Wow, I don't think I realised at the time, but we never heard Daniel speak. I remember in the run-up to the movie's release there was this Katie Couric Behind the Scenes special that I refused to watch - I didn't want to be spoiled for the movie's actual content.
This week marks my 6th year at
heidi8, and it's also the 13th anniversary of the opening of the FriendsZone, which was my first real non-music fandom experience, and wow, that's more than a third of my life with Friendsz and about a sixth of my life on LJ.
Damned long time. And this little 100-second clip was a tiny part of it in terms of minutes and seconds, and such an immense part of it in terms of import and impact.
Meep. Wow, what ickle things they were then. How grown-up we all are now.

Date: 2008-02-07 03:34 am (UTC)It's so funny... what you said about that clip is so very similar to what I always think about the Zone... joining it was such a random little whim of a moment on an ordinary day wasting time at work... I don't think I'd even seen the show yet! And... 13 years later... look at us now... :)

We are in Xanadu
Metaphorically, at least.
We really are. Isn't it great?

Amazing.

Date: 2008-02-07 07:13 am (UTC)It's not just the movie or the trailer, either. Back in 2001, there was still loads left to the book series that we didn't know. I find myself looking at my Harry Potter hardbacks and marveling that I have them all.

Date: 2008-02-07 01:09 pm (UTC)I hope they have it in some way in Movie #7. Maybe one of the reasons for splitting it into two films, as rumor has it, is so they can do more about the Epilogue Generation and get some kid-quidditch in in that way?

Date: 2008-02-07 03:10 pm (UTC)I suspect the split is because they intend to give the camping scenes the four full hours they merit.
What the last book needed was more camping! Hollywood means to deliver.

Date: 2008-02-07 03:15 pm (UTC)I have no camping-esque icons. There is probably a reason for that.

Date: 2008-02-07 03:19 pm (UTC)If they actually show the portrait, it will be blindingly obvious to the audience that Harry should have begun by stealing that... even more than it was in the book.

Date: 2008-02-07 01:08 pm (UTC)How does that mess with your Bet with the Cosmos? No, not those Cosmos.
I made a bet with someone circa 2001 - it's in the archives of HPfGU - that Draco would do something that was definitively not-evil through the rest of the books. Unfortunately, the person I made the bet with passed away between the releases of Book Five and Book Six, so we never got to debate the Scene Atop the Tower - it's one of my biggest sadnesses about fandom. I would have loved having that convo with him.

Date: 2008-02-11 09:08 pm (UTC)I love that they tried to fit in every major plot point of the book that they put into the movie in that preview. Great Hall! Hagrid! All the teachers! Flying lessons! Troll!
It's 7 years since I started a diary on Diaryland. Those seem like very far off days :D
