...suitcase of memories, time after...

I was clearing off an old desktop computer - the one I used from 2002 through 2006 - and I found something I didn't realise I still had.

One of the first trailers for Harry Potter & the Philosopher's Stone, circa Spring, 2001. It was so early, we still didn't have a release date (it ended up coming out in November, 2001) and it was our first glimpse into WB's version of the wizarding world.

I put it up on YouTube yesterday for archival purposes, and

Wow, I don't think I realised at the time, but we never heard Daniel speak. I remember in the run-up to the movie's release there was this Katie Couric Behind the Scenes special that I refused to watch - I didn't want to be spoiled for the movie's actual content.

This week marks my 6th year at [livejournal.com profile] heidi8, and it's also the 13th anniversary of the opening of the FriendsZone, which was my first real non-music fandom experience, and wow, that's more than a third of my life with Friendsz and about a sixth of my life on LJ.

Damned long time. And this little 100-second clip was a tiny part of it in terms of minutes and seconds, and such an immense part of it in terms of import and impact.

Meep. Wow, what ickle things they were then. How grown-up we all are now.

Isn't he just the cutest little thing? With all his expressions and giddy jumping for the letters and...

Awww, Dan.

Wow. I remember so well when this first clip came out. I remember when the press release came out with the first photos of Dan, Emma, and Rupert. I was SO BEYOND THRILLED. Now everyone is practically ancient!

And they put those fake round glasses on Dan! And people looked at clips from The Borrowers and said that's Draco? WTF? And Rupert and Emma were so wee!

It's so funny... what you said about that clip is so very similar to what I always think about the Zone... joining it was such a random little whim of a moment on an ordinary day wasting time at work... I don't think I'd even seen the show yet! And... 13 years later... look at us now... :)

What we have made is real -
We are in Xanadu

Metaphorically, at least.

We really are. Isn't it great?

12-year Zonerversary next week. TWELVE YEARS.

My job at NG, my wife, and that freezing cold weekend in Punxsutawney are all down to that list.

Amazing.

Oh wow - if it wasn't for that trailer, I wouldn't be here today.

Thanks for sharing it. :)

Oh wow! That gave me chills. I can just imagine the excitement that trailer must have incited back then. Wow!

And congratulations on your faniversary!

It did, and it didn't. Back then there was a *huge* contingent that thought the films would be awful (and IMHO Movie #1 kinda sorta was) and a smaller group who wanted to boycott them, and a tiny group who thought that It Would Change Fandom For the Worse Forever!

: giggles slightly at the idea

Wow, I remember how much I flipped over that trailer back in the day. The first look at Quidditch made me so happy that I was in tears.

It's not just the movie or the trailer, either. Back in 2001, there was still loads left to the book series that we didn't know. I find myself looking at my Harry Potter hardbacks and marveling that I have them all.

Oh, God, seeig Quidditch for the first time! Was just so...

I hope they have it in some way in Movie #7. Maybe one of the reasons for splitting it into two films, as rumor has it, is so they can do more about the Epilogue Generation and get some kid-quidditch in in that way?

I suspect the split is because they intend to give the camping scenes the four full hours they merit.

What the last book needed was more camping! Hollywood means to deliver.

Trudge. Trudge. Trudge.

I have no camping-esque icons. There is probably a reason for that.

Toward making room for more camping, I suggest a logical deletion: The scene at the end with Dumbledore's portrait.

If they actually show the portrait, it will be blindingly obvious to the audience that Harry should have begun by stealing that... even more than it was in the book.

I was so cynical in those days - I would have bet my right arm they'd never make all seven!

In fact, I think I did, if you can find the archives of alt.talk.harry-potter....

Technically, though, isn't the rumor that they're not going to make seven - that they're going to make eight!
How does that mess with your Bet with the Cosmos? No, not those Cosmos.

I made a bet with someone circa 2001 - it's in the archives of HPfGU - that Draco would do something that was definitively not-evil through the rest of the books. Unfortunately, the person I made the bet with passed away between the releases of Book Five and Book Six, so we never got to debate the Scene Atop the Tower - it's one of my biggest sadnesses about fandom. I would have loved having that convo with him.

excellent point - I will claim I said 'they'll never make seven films', not 'they won't film all seven books' - thank you for the legal advice!

That is great to have! It's amazing how far the films have come from that.

I love that they tried to fit in every major plot point of the book that they put into the movie in that preview. Great Hall! Hagrid! All the teachers! Flying lessons! Troll!

It's 7 years since I started a diary on Diaryland. Those seem like very far off days :D
