Hey, Northern Hemisphere people?

Anyone wearing white shoes (not sneakers) today?

What's the rule in the Antipodes about wearing white? Is it something you're only to do between, say, Christmas & Easter, or is there no old fashioned etiquette rule on it?

Do those of you in Europe have a dictate on it? Summer months only? Only months without an "R"?

I'm feeling curious, notsomuch fashion conscious....

The rule is white shoes (or white in general, I think) only between Easter and Labor Day, but you live in Florida, where it's still most definitely summer, so I think it's OK (also I think it's OK because that's a slightly ridiculous rule :p).

I'm unaware of any etiquette regarding white shoes. White sneakers are very common (and I've owned pairs for a very long time!). Mind you, I'm almost fashion-blind, so maybe I'm not the person to ask!

My rule on white: don't wear white pants, shoes (unless they're sneakers) or jackets at any time. They just get dirty and your drycleaning bill will be huge (seriously, white suits???).

Uh - I had no idea there was a rule. While overcoats where very popular this year...

I wore white pants once. In junior high school. I so despised how I looked that day so I never wore them again.

I have a bunch of white sweaters and some dresses, though.

Heh. I don't know of any rules, but then again I'm not exactly fashion conscious. The other thing is that fashion has gone a bit mad lately...

Nope, the white after labour day rule doesn't apply here in AU. It's coming into spring/summer now, so there's nothing but white and bright colours from now until autumn.

I've never really given a flying eff about the whole "no white shoes after Labor Day" thing. If it's seasonally appropriate, weather-wise, or it matches an outfit, wear 'em. Two's wearing her white sandals today. I don't have any, but I wouldn't care if I did - it's going to be 83 and sunny later, so it's still 'summer' as far as weather's concerned.

Cate's worn Crocs all summer, and she's still wearing them now. But with the weather we have, yeah, seasonally appropriate rules.

My grandparents (the ultimate in Yankee pragmaticism) would hit me six ways to Sunday if I wore white shoes/pants/dresses after Labor Day. Sneakers are the exception, though. And I always heard it as Labor Day to Memorial Day -- Easter being an exception -- but maybe it's because Easter isn't really "spring" where I am... there's usually still snow on the ground.

I think the first time my mom mentioned the "rule" to me was when I wanted a pair of fuzzy white moon boots when we were going skiing for the first time when I was 11 or 12. They were, like sneakers, an exception to the rule.

Heh, strangely enough I do believe in the "no white after Labor Day" rule, but seeing as I wear sneakers or flip flops 362 days/year anyway and only have one pair of black pumps to wear on the very rare occasions that I wear dress shoes anyway, it hardly matters.

No white shoes after Labor Day or before Memorial Day, with an exception for Easter church. No pantyhose with open-toed shoes, ever.

Yes, they're arbitrary, somewhat silly rules, but the fact is that if you grew up southern, it's IN YOUR HEAD AND WON'T GO AWAY, and if you see someone wearing white shoes in March, no matter how much you tell yourself it doesn't matter, you can't help but think, somewhere in the back of your mind, that they must be a little bit trashy.

Yes EXACTLY bbennett! Same applies (well to most extent) up here in yankee tundra territory, but its more evident with white clothing than shoes, but then again the only white shoes I own are white keds, and they are never out of style I dont think. Anyway,no kidding, I pulled all the white capris and skirts out of the closet and put them in the 'off-season' closet. Southern girls have these things you know, even those of us who are fashion disasters like I am, but still make an effort to try and be stylish, er well sometimes.

I don't think I've worn white shoes at all since my wedding day. I still own white dress shoes, but I rarely wear white anymore. Everytime I look at white bottoms and think about buying them, I think about what they'd look like after riding the subway to work and always decline :-).

But other than those, I don't own any white shoes anymore, either, other than Keds.

Sneakers don't count.

I avoid the issue but not owning any white dress shoes/sandals. I have taupe, black, brown, navy but NO white. And no white skirts. *shudders* Don't want my arse to look any bigger than it is.

I think white dresses are different from white skirts, though - maybe because it's the whole-body line instead of having your body bifurcated at the waist?

I love this post. :D

I went back to college yesterday, and when I was packing my mom kept asking me if I wanted to bring my new white shoes, and I was like "No way! We're leaving on Labor Day! I'd never get to wear them!"

I agree with the above people that it's Labor Day to Memorial Day plus Easter, because a lot of the time it snows after Easter.

I usually push off the non-white shoe issue until at least the end of September (the "first day of fall"). Because as you know, it's so NOT the first day of fall, as it's usually still hotter than blue blazes, but we like to pretend.

But then, I mostly wear a pair of Birkenstock sandals anyway... it's Meg who has the white shoes!

My mom and my sister follow that rule. They also stack their clean washclothes and towels with the folds going the same way and in order of color, though. Which is to say, I don't share my family's habits unless they make sense on a practical level.

Therefore, I wear white well after labor day, because it stays hot here well after labor day, and because a great deal of my warm weather wardrobe (including shoes) is white. Why the hell wouldn't I wear half of my available wardrobe just because of some archaic arbitrary fashion trope, you know?

I also keep a couple of white t-shirts/camisoles for occasional wear under long sleeved shirts and sweaters in the winter, for the practical reason that white goes with nearly every article of clothing I own.

I know, I know. I'm a rebel!

I do believe that that rule has gone the by and by. I think that that rule is out of fashion or else they wouldn't have the colour "winter white". I personally have an aversion to white pants but if I have to match and outfit and that includes white shoes I'm going for it.

Here in the desert it'll still be hot until at least mid-October, and I could get away with capris until Thanksgiving. And I still haven't worn my white capris with my black and white polka dot shirt, so I don't care.

Also, I didn't realize the no white after Labor Day rule was a Southern thing, as my only friends who ever went by the rule were Catholic and I thought it was a Catholic thing. Heh.

It's posts like this that make me glad I live in Colorado, where the only fashion rules most people are aware of are, "Try not to walk around naked" and "If you're going out for a fancy dinner, at least try to wear your cleanest jeans and scrape the mud off your hiking boots."

I'm wearing flip-flops today. *g*

I adore Shoes!

My mom always said that the white and black shoes only referred to "Sunday shoes" or "Dress shoes". So we would have brand new white sandles for Easter Sunday and we could wear them through the summer - but after Labor Day, we got new black Sunday shoes...and we wore those through the winter until the next Easter.

I've never owned a pair of black tennis shoes...But I know that here in the south, well, here in Texas, I know a lot of people who follow the "shoe rule". It's actually quite humorous...
