And in my flail, I mistyped something.

No, only Nathan is dead as he dropped Peter from a huge height and flew away really quickly so he'd be safe and Peter would kaboom before he hit the ground is supposed to be "No, neither are dead as Nathan dropped Peter from a huge height and flew away really quickly so he'd be safe and Peter would kaboom before he hit the ground except Peter can't be killed by radiation so he isn't dead either."
SORRY!

For the 1st question I answered, "Something Else," and that something else is this:

BOTH THE PETRELLI BROTHERS SURVIVE because any other alternative will cause me to go insane.

Ahem.

I like to think that Nathan was a genetics experiment and Peter was a fluke, which would be filled with delicious irony in many ways.

BOTH THE PETRELLI BROTHERS SURVIVE

Here's how I explain it to myself:

1. Nathan couldn't drop Peter and fly away, since he didn't know when Peter would explode and the whole idea was to save the world.

2. However, he was so determined to get Peter away from NYC that he forgot about outer space.

3. Reaching a certain height, he ran out of air, lost consciousness, and let go of Peter accidentally. Then, as he fell, he fell far enough away from Peter that he survived the explosion... which was, however, enough to wake him up, at which point he flew to safety.

4. Peter's healing factor saves him. (We will ignore the reality of his disintegrated brain.)

Now, why Peter didn't simply fly away solo -- no Nathan required -- I cannot understand at all. Especially since I was explicitly telling him to do so.

Someone on a message board I read theorized that Peter was concentrating so hard on not exploding that he couldn't make himself fly away.

Well, I think that's about the best we can hope for. =)

Along similar lines, try explaining how

• a lead bullet could have killed him, defeating his healing power, and thus stopped the nuke-level explosion, but

• the nuke-level explosion doesnot defeat his healing power and kill him

A lead bullet in his brainstem would have killed him. Removing it would have brought him back, but the killing should have/could have stopped the radiation power from kabooming everyone.

...in which case Peter is now surely dead due to the utter disintegration of his brainstem.

But let's try this:

1. Claire shoots Peter.
2. A thin metal cable 1000 miles long is attached to the bullet.
3. Peter is dumped into the center of the Pacific.
4. Somebody on a boat pulls the string, yanking out the bullet.

This way saves Nathan, notice.

On the other hand, it doesn't quite have the gripping Brothers Bond Together, Dramatically Sacrificing Selves, to Save World thing going for it.

I'm on board with the theory that Nathan flew Peter high enough to drop him, and then got the hell out of the way. That way, they both live! Joy!

Um - why is there no "they are both alive" option?

BECAUSE IT IS TRUE.

Seriously:
a) Off-screen comic book deaths are never deaths.
b) Exploding a bomb above New York would cause awful radiation and shock waves anyway; zooming east and dropping Peter so he exploded relatively close to the ocean would not.

why is there no "they are both alive" option?

There is, but it didn't occur to me that it could happen in any way other than Nathan flying far from Peter, so I sorta only gave that option. Sorry!

I LOVE YOUR OPTION B!

I WILL CLING TO IT. (At the least, until I rewatch the episode and see the angle at which the explosion happened. Seriously though, the TWoP boards were discussing that possibility at length, and the consensus was that if the show cares about vague scientific accuracy, exploding Peter over New York is a Really Bad Thing, unless it's so high in the atmosphere that Nathan wouldn't be breathing anyway.

I guess what confused me about the flying-away-from-Peter option was that it started with "Nathan is dead"?

1. Matt's not dead as of the end of the episode because when he was on the stretcher and Molly was talking to him the sheet would have been pulled over his head if he were.

2. We already know that Angela Petrelli has some sort of power (but not what kind) because she told Claire this when they were talking about going to France. But, yes, a deranged bitch.

3. George Takei is made of awesome no matter what. :)

4. Now I'm wondering if the Noah thing is a reference to Noah's Ark, and all I can do is think of the horrendous and ridiculously literal-minded sequel they've made to Bruce Almighty... Poor Steve Carrell and Lauren Graham! Their careers won't end because of it, but that will probably end up being right up there, shame-wise, with any of the people associated in any way with the film Ishtar.

More specifically, if Matt were dead, Molly wouldn't be talking to him, because she wouldn't be able to sense him anymore, and she'd know it.

The two thoughts I had at the end was why is Sylar a cock roach and HIRO IS HIS OWN GRANDPA! Which after noticing his Dad has one of the men kinda ruined it but still, it's all amusing to think it anyway!

But NOAH? And Peter and Nathan can't die. It's a rule. Neither can Matt. Tis another rule. :D

No... neither is dead. Nathan dropped Peter, flew away to Hawaii or to my place at lightning speed a la Superman, saving himself. Peter made sure his last thought was of Claire when he exploded, thus managing to regenerate after.

BOTH ARE ALIVE. Because I say so. Oh, hi Nathan! Want some coffee? :)

I think:

(1) Peter will survive the explosion and the plummet to earth. He now has absorbed Niki's strength, and possibly DL's phasing, Micah's way with machines, and Molly's locator ability, and Hiro's space-time manipulation (if he hadn't already done so) which is why he was about to lose it in the first place.

(2) Nathan is alive as well, but is going to have a very hard time getting back to New York.

(3) Matt lives, but Candace is dead from the injuries Niki gave her.

(4) I think it's possible Sylar is dead and someone dragged the body into the sewer. Claude, perhaps?

(5) Molly's scarier-than-Sylar person might be the Haitian.

I need to re-watch it. My brain was fried from having literally just arrived home from PR an hour before.
