heidi: (Wicked-animated)
I've now spoken to four people - RL friends - who aren't incredibly familiar with the potterverse - one has read the first book only but hasn't seen any of the movies, one's read the first three books and seen the first film, one hasn't read or seen any, and one's seen the first movie and hasn't read any of the books.

And they all got the plot. They all also recognized that there was "something more there" in terms of what all the symbols & in-jokes were, and for that, three of them plan to read the books.

So I think we're seeing that people who aren't In Depth Fans are still getting it. But given that my Harry, who's almost five and has seen both movies and not read - or been read - any of the books in their entirity, got it, I'm not particularly surprised.

Also, I asked my husband what he thought the relationship between Sirius and Remus was, and he replied, "You mean the whole Boys' Boarding School Romance thing? Yeah, I got it."

So now we know!

- that's Remus & Sirius in the Shack, in Emoticon form. More here!

Just a reminder:

FictionAlley, purveyors of aids to Fanfic Authors and Artists, are pleased to bring you: The Azkaban Assignment!

It's an Alfonso Cuaron Fangirl/Fanboy Extravaganza for the premiere of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Reviews of the film so far (from fans as well as professional critics) have acclaimed the film for its cinematographic brilliance and its darker, richer tone. To celebrate Cuaron's success, our challenge is to write a fic or create a piece of fanart which incorporates a concept or image (like the Frog Chorus or the piano in the Shrieking Shack) that doesn't contradict Book Three, but likewise doesn't appear in the book.

Some images to inspire your writing:
Sirius's lines to Remus as he's transforming
The way the Trio is standing when they think Buckbeak is being executed
What happens to clothing during a transformation
How did Hagrid get to be so good at skipping rocks?
Is Pansy's hairstyle inspired by Louise Brooks?
Why doesn't Parvati think that freaky Jack in the Box is scary?
Wizarding "jazz" and Big Band music - when was it trendy, if ever?

Post your art (in the usual way) here or post your cookies or ficlets here sometime within the month of June. Fics may be drabble length (100 words) or up to 3000 words.

All entrants (as of July 1, 2004) will receive six months' usage of a FictionAlley Online Notepad.
