I was a history major at Penn, and I took an amazing History of the South course from her in my Freshman year - second semester. She was a terrific and dynamic professor and I can't wait to see what she does at Harvard.

Date: 2007-02-11 08:14 am (UTC)Harvard's last president ticked off people so much with his "We don't hire many women because they're stupid" comments (OK, those weren't his exact words, but close) that Harvard really had to hire a female president. Maybe having a female president will actually do something about the problems facing women in academia -- namely, the idea that beginning faculty are supposed to move repeatedly from college to college before being given a permanent job (it's very hard for women to find a husband who will follow them from city to city to city) and the timing of academia, which requires faculty to work frantically until they're about 40 (like, right during the years when women are busy with children) and then lets them coast.
