But I had to write it up for myself.
House. Senate. Statehouses. Governorships.

Oversight. A change in the cabinet.

Stem cell research in one more state. A rejection of a ban on gay marriage in one more state.

And maybe in two years it will be ten more states. Or even more.

It's a chance to fix the country and see whether we can again be a place of hope and optimism and, well, not torture.

I still believe in a place called hope.

But for now, I'm off to get ice cream to enjoy while watching The Daily Show. Last night's episode has been downloaded from iTunes and is on my ipod so I can share it - belatedly - with my grandma tomorrow.

Should I retire this icon or otherwise tweak it to commemorate today? If so, how?

As much as I'd love to, we shouldn't gloat. Remember, we're the nice party. I'd retire it. It'd be like someone keeping a "Bush/Cheney '04" bumper sticker on their car past the election. (Yes, I know there are people who do that.)

Let's pat ourselves on the back, enjoy the victory for a little bit, then try to bring back the bipartisanship that is sorely lacking in Washington.

Yup - the D's are on the hook now. Time to start planning. Ruthless in battle, gracious in victory, unrelenting in effort.

Or, as they put it in Bull Durham:

"Can't I enjoy the moment?"
"The moment's over."

2008's only 2 years away. It's never too early to be ready.

Then again, kicking out the corrupt doesn't mean that you're interested in kicking all Republicans just because of who they voted for. At least, I hope it doesn't - I voted for a Republican for our state Agriculture commissioner because he was the better guy for the job. ANd I don't want anyone kicking me for it.

It's like (OMG am I about to quote RUSH?) Limbaugh said yesterday - there's no reason to "carry the water and make excuses for people who don't deserve it". I think he did because he was addicted to power, and I hope the democrats don't develop the same Issue.

But I also hope that Hewlett Packard decides that advertising on Air America isn't a Controversial thing. 'Cause it isn't.

I think Rush, Hannity, Scarborough, and all those other talking heads are addicted to feeling like victims. Calls of "liberal media!" and "obstructionists!" resonate well with their Clinton-era mindsets and those of their listeners.

And yes, there are good Republicans who don't like what's happening with their party, both in the list to starboard and in the corruption. And no one is going to kick you out for not voting Democrat. I almost voted third-party for our governor this year.

I think Pelosi and her "First 100 hours" strategy is a good one. The Dems have a mandate, to borrow a phrase. Let's hope they don't disappoint. Let's hope they show that they are the better party to run the government. I know, it's hard to get much worse, but still.
