FictionAlley is turning five!
Jul. 22nd, 2006 02:29 amMy main post about it is on the
fiction_alley lj here. Our poll on memories of FA is here. And later today I'll add in links to the gackable icons from our lovely new cover art.
I'm all contemplative in the middle of Alaska's Inside Passage this morning, posting about the frenzy of five years ago when we launched something that we hoped people would enjoy. And I'm thinking of all the people who volunteered for FA - for a few months or a few years - and who helped build, generate, instigate or improve a part of the site. Amber and Simon, especially - FA would never have happened or survived without both of you.
FictionAlley was created to be a repository of fics and a resource for fic-writers and in some ways, we're still simply that. You can put your fic onto FA and know that it'll be searchable and accessable at the same url and we won't suddenly start charging to host it.
But it's also so much more, because of the people who use it every day, or once a year. No one person can even comprehend everything that FA is, or will, I hope, metamorphosize to become.

Date: 2006-07-22 03:07 pm (UTC)Man, it's been such a long time but a fun ride - I remember lurking around when FA first went live - time sure flies because it boggles my mind that just about four and a half years ago I delurked on FAP's SCUSA...
*throws confetti*

Date: 2006-07-22 03:52 pm (UTC)and no I'm not biased at all! It's a place where proper spelling and grammar is required in the fics, and at the very least, decent spelling and grammar and GOOD punctuation is required in the posts, and that is important to me. It's a place where everyone is fun and nice, or at the very least, civil. ;o) Trolls are not allowed, and that is *also* important!
I love how it is an equal oppurtunity fanfic site, no judging of ships or writing styles or main characters or eras, etc.
I read your post over at the fiction Alley lj, Heidi, as well. I really, really would join the fic intake team (I even looked at the application) but when I *did* look at the application, I realized that *this* was why I needed a beta: I was totally flummoxed on what to correct! Oh well, I tried. ;o)
But anyway, Fiction Alley is the second HP fansite I ever discovered (I discovered the first after typing in "Harry Potter Fan fiction" at yahoo and choosing the first one) and I discovered it from a link from the first HP website I ever visited. Ever since then, I've been hooked!
Such great fics, such a wide variety of fics, and so many fun, HP dorks like myself to get to know. Thanks for starting this website, Heidi, it's brought me hours of joy.

Date: 2006-07-22 05:03 pm (UTC)This is all pretty crazy for me, I was 13 back when I registered. Now I'm almost 18! I've been registered at FA for most of my online "life".
Here's to 5 more years!

Date: 2006-07-23 10:08 pm (UTC)Can I just mail the art to you, since it's for Katie's scolorship?
Even if it didn't get in in time for Lumos, you'd have it and could maybe use it as a fund raiser or something for FA if needed.
