1) The number of books I own:
I can't even count. These are our bookcases, other than the ones which are for the kids themselves, and my cookbooks are separate from these as well. One of the bookcases is about 2/3 dvds, but the rest are all books. They are, of course, both Aaron's and mine, but, well, we share.

2) The last book I bought

I just got two copies of Eloise to give as gifts, but the most recent purchase for myself is Paul Theroux's new travel book about Africa. Haven't opened it yet, though.

3) The last book I read
Technically, The Magic Treehouse's Sunset of the Sabertooth, which Harry adores. Last book I finished for myself was a reread of Brat Farrar. Last new book I started and finished was The Girls in the Van, which is about political reporting (a longtime passion of mine).

4) Five books that mean a lot to me
In pulling my books for Catherine's bookcase, I have to list five kids' books, and five I've read since I was 18.

Kids:
Eloise
Searching for Shona
A Little Princess
Marjorie Morningstar
My 1977 copy of the Star Wars novelization, containing the full!scene!with!Biggs!

Adulthood:
The Eight
A Prayer for Owen Meaney
Harry Potter & the Prisoner of Azkaban
Good Omens
Dr Sears' The Baby Book

5) Tag, you're it!

I just started reading "The Magic Treehouse's Sunset of the Sabertooth" to my son today! They're the first books he's ever read to himself. I read a chapter, then he reads one. Love them.

I know I'm just an anonymous lurker, but I enjoy following your LJ :)

I love The Eight! I've always wanted to name my daughter Mireille, but fear that any non-French will not be able to pronounce it. Alas.

I really should re-read that book.

I deleted my earlier comment in order to add something...

I *lovelovelove* Brat Farrar, as well as Tey's other books. Did you ever see the BBC serialisation of Brat Farrar that was done in the mid-eighties? It was produced by Terrance Dicks (the great Dr. Who writer) and starred Mark Greenstreet, the great-nephew of Sydney Greenstreet. He was also screen-tested to play James Bond, just before T. Dalton got the job.

ETA: It has only just occurred to me that the story parallels what J. Tey might have imagined was the history behind Perkin Warbeck who attempted to challenge King Henry VII, by calling himself Richard of York (the younger of the princes who disappeared from the Tower in 1483). He returns to claim an inheritance, and looking very like his supposed father Edward IV, but is in danger from the real murderer of Richard of York (and his older brother Edward V)- Henry VII.

Speaking of books, I tried to find a link at TLC for Amazon.ca to purchase my Raintree copy of HBP but couldn't find it.

I'd rather let my purchase benefit TLC if possible. Was such a deal struck with a Canadian distributor this time out?
