So I nearly died today
Jul. 10th, 2004 10:20 pmI was driving back from the Seaquarium - harry and jon in the backseat, my mum in the passenger side, north on I-95, and two boxes flew out of the back of the pickup in front of us.
I usually get away from pickups with stuff in the back, but they hadn't been visible - they weren't on the racks and the back was up. I had about half a second to react, and I couldn't move to the left because there was a car, and the boxes had landed to the left and right edges of our lane - we were on the far right, and there wasn't enough space between the lane edge and the wall, given where it landed.
So I swerved a bit to the right then to the left to go around them as much as possible, and got a bit of a brush from one, but I managed to not hit them head on, thank heavens.
Everyone is fine, the car is only slightly scraped, and I did finally stop shaking, after about an hour.
But it was a terrifying half-second. And it puts everything in perspective.
