Date: 2004-01-26 02:03 pm (UTC)Now they're getting nasty and starting to have a potential for hurting people.
I'd like to know just who it is they've been consulting with on this lawsuit thing.

Date: 2004-01-26 02:00 pm (UTC)Is this group actually harassing other LJ users in the community by their threats of lawsuits?
Could they, in effect, be kicked out of LJ for what they're doing?

Date: 2004-01-26 08:02 pm (UTC)I actually did file a "threats and harassment" TOS violation report with LJ about them, and I'll post updates if I get any.
I'm wondering how anyone who's that big of a dipshit (or rather, that much of a group of dipshits) got anyone from the government to talk to them, much less tell them that somehow LJ is a "commercial" medium and that these Evil Writers Must Be Stopped!

Date: 2004-01-26 02:17 pm (UTC)Besides, it's called the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act, or COPPA. Not COPA. If you're threatening legal action, can you at least get your terminology straight?

Date: 2004-01-26 03:36 pm (UTC)This attitude of "We Must Protect Our Children" is something I never understood and likely will not ever in the future, either. Not letting kids know about sex is NOT going to stop them from having sex. Not allowing them to drink alcohol DOES NOT stop them from drinking. Preaching abstinence in school, as they did at my catholic private school in the States, results in teenage pregnancies because the girls don't know how to protect themselves. Not talking about homosexuality just makes the lives of those who actually are gay that much harder because they will be even more terrified of coming out.
How does our fiction hurt anyone? I get it that rape fics are horrible, I really don't like them myself, but I know nobody who doesn't give proper warnings at the top, so then I'll know not to read it. Nobody forces kids to read the fics. I just do not understand the f_s'ers. :(

Date: 2004-01-26 04:49 pm (UTC)They make my stomach writhe. They scare me, not because of what they say, but because I am afraid this is what will happen more and more in the future. Right now, we're living in a glorious time in which freedom of speech on the web is largely guaranteed. I am very sure it won't stay that way.
The US Government has tried to put out a law that restricts freedom of speech on the net for almost 10 years "to protect the children". So far none of those tries has made it into enforcable law, because they were all challenged in court before they could. Unless they completely scratch the 'freedom of speech' part of the constitution, I don't see it happening.

Date: 2004-01-26 04:33 pm (UTC)*shakes head* When are they going to realize that the only way to keep kids away from the seediness online is to keep kids off the internet?
Would it be legal for the government to pass a law making it criminal to allow children under 13 internet access? After all, they're not legally competent (I think), and they can't take out accounts at most locations anyway. And it's not like there's anything someone that age needs out here that they can't get from hard-copy research.
Simply put, they don't need to be out here. For the sake of our way of living online, let's keep it that way.
