We are home...
Jun. 4th, 2003 07:18 pmWe are happy, we are resting, we are (well, Jon is) enjoying milk.
Thanks so much to everyone who posted, emailed and YMed such sweet wishes - I had my bberry with me, as all of you can probably guess, and those messages were so sweet to read in the wee, wake-filled hours of the morning.
I need to go eat, so I can nourish the little guy, but for those who are not squeemish,
2100 Sunday - came to hospital and checked in. Doula arrived
2130 started on cervadol. Had moderate contractions overnight, and slept thru a
lot of them.
400 watched Grease on tv. Contractions harder but still more pressure than pain
656 started pitocin
745 water broken
800 contractions hurting for the first time. Doula amazing help. Took shower
with hand out to keep heplock dry. Laboured on ball, rocking chair and in bed
1045 first consider epidural, as am only at 3 and not sure I can take 4-7 more
hours of this
1110 ask for epidural, so they start the massive iv infusion which should take
15 minutes at least.
1115 dilated to 4
1125 want to push because baby's head is in place but am only at 6. They up the
pit. Epidural lady ready to start but...
1130 oops! Am at eight! No painkillers for me!
1135 begging to push. Doctor is not on floor yet as office is 5 flights up. Am
hysterical when told to wait.
1136 doctor arrives. They break down bed from a "labour bed" into a "delivery bed" (i.e. with somewhere to put my feet so I can balance) and tell me to...
1138 PUSH!
1140 3 contractions/pushes later, Jonathon is on my chest, covered in vermix
and blood, already suctioned (they did this while his head was out and before I
pushed his body out)
He is wailing and wonderful!
Amazing facts:
Harrison and Jonathon were both born on Monday mornings after Sunday night
checkins and about 14 hours of labour.
My ex roommate Stacey and her husband had a baby girl - Emily - a few hours before Jon was born. We are thrilled and expect Jon and Emily's wedding should take place right after they graduate from Penn in 2025.
I didn't get to switch on the "delivery" playlist on the MP3 player as we sorta ran our of time (see behind cut for explanation) so when he was born, the song on the player was the Finn Bros Paradise (Wherever You Are) and when they put him on my chest about a minute later, the song that started playing was the Ewan MacGregor version of Your Song. And yes, I sang it to him - and have, a dozen times since.
He's lifting his head a bit already, and knows his mama by sight and sound.
Harry is beyong thrilled with his baby brother, and all he wants to do is kiss him and show him toys and say that he can play with them later.
I'm in heaven...

Date: 2003-06-04 04:45 pm (UTC)I think it very appropriate (and wonderful) that Ewen MacGregor's versio of Your Song should be yours and Jon's song... *sigh*
Congrats Heidi :)

Date: 2003-06-04 04:50 pm (UTC)I love the idea of a "delivery" playlist, but failing that, Your Song is a wonderful way to start.
Just... awwwwww. :-)

Date: 2003-06-04 06:51 pm (UTC)And how beautiful that "Your Song" was on when he was born.
*happy sigh*
I'm also so glad that Harry is so thrilled and isn't having the sibling jealousy that I've heard can happen sometimes. It sounds like he's totally taking it in stride! Go Harry!
Hugs,
Elia
