In a new interview conducted by Emma Watson, Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling drops a bombshell: She regrets putting Ron and Hermione together.
The shocking revelation came in the new issue of Wonderland which Watson is a guest editor of this month. The comments were obtained by The Sunday Times.
Rowling says that she should have put Hermione and Harry together in the Harry Potter series instead of Hermione and Ron.
“I wrote the Hermione/Ron relationship as a form of wish fulfillment,” she says. “That’s how it was conceived, really. For reasons that have very little to do with literature and far more to do with me clinging to the plot as I first imagined it, Hermione ended up with Ron.”
“I know, I’m sorry,” she continued, “I can hear the rage and fury it might cause some fans, but if I’m absolutely honest, distance has given me perspective on that. It was a choice I made for very personal reasons, not for reasons of credibility. Am I breaking people’s hearts by saying this? I hope not.”
Watson didn’t seem shocked by these comments and agreed with her. “It think there are fans out there who know that too and who wonder whether Ron would have really been able to make her happy.”
Rowling also says that Ron and Hermione would have needed “relationship counseling.”

Date: 2014-02-02 01:05 am (UTC)If I didn't have to put up with Brannon Braga's asshattery when he was writing Trek or DC's asshattery with the new 52, I sure as help don't care about Rowling's after the fact meanderings. This includes comments of hers that support and deny my fannish insights. They bear little weight in my books but serve to diminish the author in my esteem as a vacillating bumbler.

Date: 2014-02-02 05:03 am (UTC)I'm still a R/Hr shipper no matter what she says, though, and she can't change canon now~
H/Hr would have left Ron on the outskirts and splintered the trio entirely, so unless the end of that friendship was what JKR was going for, I'm not sure how she would have written it, even! It's interesting to see all the Harmonians coming out of the woodwork, haha.

She and Amadeus Cho would make an interesting couple, though.

Date: 2014-02-02 01:16 pm (UTC)For reasons that have very little to do with literature and far more to do with me clinging to the plot as I first imagined it
because really, wasn't that the problem with the final books generally? Marching to a conclusion that didn't entirely feel earned in so many respects, just because it was what she'd thought up when she wrote the first book?
As to the shipping bit, my extreme, sincere, and heartfelt sympathies to R/Hr shippers who feel like she's being mean to Ron and undermining something they loved, because that's not cool. But no sympathies extended to those who bullied other shippers on the basis of their ship being canon or not, and used JKR's words in interviews to do so. That's the sweet, sweet irony of the whole thing, to me.

Date: 2014-02-02 03:02 pm (UTC)It's like, you want to use canon as a weapon to bludgeon other fans with? Fine. Hit yourself about the head with this.
Which I say as someone who has ABSOLUTELY given into that temptation myself. Not my proudest fandom moments.
