Seriously, perfect film.

I saw it at a preview tonight with [livejournal.com profile] hllangel, Harry and a friend of his, and one of Aaron's 16 year old cousins and a friend of hers. The 12 year old boys and grownups had read the books, the 16 year old girls hadn't, but were familiar with Josh Hutcherson.

And it was - everyone agreed - perfect (although the 16 year olds didn't understand who Gale was). Jennifer Lawrence is utterly brilliant as Katniss, and Josh Hutcherson is wonderful as Peeta (I don't think we see him til he's reaped) and we can both tell that he's in love with her, and understand why she doesn't trust that he does.

Woody Harrelson is the best Haymitch that could ever be (given RDJ's other commitments and seriously, RDJ looks way too posh to be District 12 anyway). After the first scenes Liam is hardly in it but I'm looking forward to seeing what he does with CF and Mockingjay.

Unexpectedly, I spent every scene they're in together shipping President Snow/Seneca Crane in both good and bad ways, and omgomgRUE!!!!!!! Also Prim but only in foreshadowing ways, which they do brilliantly. Lenny Kravitz is perfect as Cinna and while I was concerned he was too old, his Cinna is completely right.

Yes, there are some changes from the book but they all actually *work*. I'll answer questions in comments but don't want to spoil for everything. Also, normally I hate when they edit a film to add in people from its sequels but if they want to add Cashmere and Finnick and Joanna into the crowd scenes in 18 months, that would be actually cool.

If you've read the books, see the film. If you can handle dystopias and kids in peril, and haven't read the books, see the film. It is *that* good. And those who saw Sorcerer's Stone with me back in November of 2001 will know that I don't automatically love a film because I loved the book....

And wheeee, I am now home for 2 weeks following about 2 weeks of travel chaos. Then it's crazy travel time through the end of May. La!

EEE I CANNOT WAIT to see it!! I have tickets for Saturday, so don't tell me anything else - just happy to know that Cinna meets approval. ;)

Seriously he is my FAVORITE, I was so freaked that they cast Lenny Kravitz, lol. But then the previews came out, and interviews started rolling in, and I started to have hope ...

How horrid and gory and frightening was it? I'm totally freaked out about a certain scene with a certain non-district 12 character in it and am wondering how much of the film I'm going to have to spend covering my eyes.

I can be very spoilery in my descriptions, or not. Tell me which you prefer. There were a few cover-the-eyes moments but they are telegraphed for you to shield your eyes.

I want to be spoiled completely. I've read the books and have an incredibly vivid imagination and suffered from nightmares for about a week after each reading of certain sections. I'm not sure if what transpired in my head is worse or much tamer than what I'll see on screen.

I'm so glad it worked so well! I often hate movies based on my favorite books, but there's so much great stuff in the Hunger Games, and I'm so glad you thought they did justice to it! I'm looking forward to Friday.

No, unfortunately, I'm taking the GRE on Saturday, so I can't afford to miss that much sleep. I'm hoping to go Saturday afternoon so it can either be a reward for doing well or consolation for blowing it, as the case may be. :)

Okay, you broke me down. Based on this review, I am now grudgingly reading the book. It's okay so far, but I'm not bowled over. Maybe seeing the movie afterwards will cement it for me.

I am definitely going to be interested in your thoughts on it. I posted my thoughts on reading all three books here but there are spoilers so read it after you finish all three, or decide not to.
How far into it are you?

LOL I just finished the first one. Read all afternoon. It was pretty good, but I wasn't so into it that I'd write fic or join the fandom. Still, I feel prepared to see the movie now. A bunch of the ladies here are going to see it together either this week or next, so I'll try and go with them.

Glad you like it!

RDJ as Haymitch could work, hmm (though yes, too posh). My mental image of Haymitch has always been Randy Quaid, who sadly is TOO crazy right now.

And yeah, Randy Quaid has.... issues. Or had? Is he better? Hopefully.

Heartened that you as a fangirl love the movie. That makes me more excited. :D :D :D

I'm seeing it tomorrow night at 8:30 with Rachel. I absolutely love the casting. I agree that I had Randy Quaid in mind, but when I thought about Woody, that seemed perfect, too. When this movie does great, hopefully they will make a movie of Unwind (never gonna happen) or Divergent (much more likely).

I just finished Book 1 and have made plans to see the movie this week. What you don't see in my icon is Suzanne Collins hiding in the back seat of the car behind Jack and me in the headlight glow of their vehicle, frothing at the mouth

It really, really was! I got tears in my eyes at the volunteering and goodbye scenes and goosebumps when Peeta and Katniss entered the parade.
