HUNGER GAMES WAS PERFECT
Mar. 22nd, 2012 12:00 amSeriously, perfect film.
I saw it at a preview tonight with
hllangel, Harry and a friend of his, and one of Aaron's 16 year old cousins and a friend of hers. The 12 year old boys and grownups had read the books, the 16 year old girls hadn't, but were familiar with Josh Hutcherson.
And it was - everyone agreed - perfect (although the 16 year olds didn't understand who Gale was). Jennifer Lawrence is utterly brilliant as Katniss, and Josh Hutcherson is wonderful as Peeta (I don't think we see him til he's reaped) and we can both tell that he's in love with her, and understand why she doesn't trust that he does.
Woody Harrelson is the best Haymitch that could ever be (given RDJ's other commitments and seriously, RDJ looks way too posh to be District 12 anyway). After the first scenes Liam is hardly in it but I'm looking forward to seeing what he does with CF and Mockingjay.
Unexpectedly, I spent every scene they're in together shipping President Snow/Seneca Crane in both good and bad ways, and omgomgRUE!!!!!!! Also Prim but only in foreshadowing ways, which they do brilliantly. Lenny Kravitz is perfect as Cinna and while I was concerned he was too old, his Cinna is completely right.
Yes, there are some changes from the book but they all actually *work*. I'll answer questions in comments but don't want to spoil for everything. Also, normally I hate when they edit a film to add in people from its sequels but if they want to add Cashmere and Finnick and Joanna into the crowd scenes in 18 months, that would be actually cool.
If you've read the books, see the film. If you can handle dystopias and kids in peril, and haven't read the books, see the film. It is *that* good. And those who saw Sorcerer's Stone with me back in November of 2001 will know that I don't automatically love a film because I loved the book....
And wheeee, I am now home for 2 weeks following about 2 weeks of travel chaos. Then it's crazy travel time through the end of May. La!

Date: 2012-03-22 11:28 pm (UTC)RDJ as Haymitch could work, hmm (though yes, too posh). My mental image of Haymitch has always been Randy Quaid, who sadly is TOO crazy right now.

Date: 2012-03-23 01:09 am (UTC)I missed the buildup - but the fireworks have drawn me in...
Date: 2012-03-24 03:02 am (UTC)I just finished Book 1 and have made plans to see the movie this week. What you don't see in my icon is Suzanne Collins hiding in the back seat of the car behind Jack and me in the headlight glow of their vehicle, frothing at the mouth
