SUBJECT LINES! We want them back for ALL styles! I have them because of my S2 and my choice to use the style for Comment pages but they should be available for EVERYONE.

Jeepers, LJ - did you PLAN in ADVANCE for this to be the question today or is it a crazy random happenstance?

Had you not done this, my rant would've been about whether, in ten years time, one should watch Peter Jackson's Middle Earth movies in the order in which they were released, or in chronological order. But you, LJ, were foolist, so it won't be.

C'mon LJ! Backpedal, this one last time.

I opened a Dreamwidth this morning ... JUUUUST in case. I've already exported all my fic to A03. I should really back my lj up ... it seems that I am preparing myself for an emergency move. O.o

As of next month, I'll have been on LJ for 10 years, so I have a terrible terror of losing all of it. Since 2004 it's all in my gmail account anyway, in terms of content, but that's not the same thing as having it in a readable format. So when DW backups began back in 2009 I was all over that from day 1. I don't crosspost enough and I don't read there enough but I have a hunch that's going to change.

Off to find Avengers-centric comms there....

Ditto - I don't want to move, but I've become increasingly paranoid about losing everything. Can you export your existing lj to dreamwidth? And do things that are locked stay locked upon transfer? I might have to look into that.

*poking nose in*

I'm using a little weird thing called LJ-Migrate to update my backup locations. It misses some posts and will de-filter your locked posts (unless there's a filter with the same name at the destination, I think?) and make them simple f-locks. Also all your icons will revert to default unless you have the icons there too. And polls are hooped unless you've got polling ability at both locations, maybe.

This doesn't bother me too much because I'm just using DW as a backup, but if you are moving to there, it could be a while to get everything perfect. It does also generates a local backup on your hard drive, which is nice.

I don't know about any other updater programs, and this one needs some simple code-monkeying, but it can be set to delete all your source posts if you aren't careful so it's a bit nerve-wracking to set up.

That sounds like it might be workable - where would I find such a weird little thingie? *bats eyelashes* And if I have no friends yet on DW, f-locked is the same as locked, yes? I would assume so. Does it import tags?

I got it from here.

It has a Mac and Windows version, and there are links to the tutorials on that page as well. It's a bit daunting for non-technical people like me, but once it's set up, it's just a sequence of the same three or four command line entries to get at and invoke the program and off it goes. (One thing, if your password has non alphanumeric characters, it may not be able to log you in, since those characters mean something different to the program.)

I checked and it does import the tags as well. What I like best is that it saves a local copy that includes comments and user icons so you don't need to rely on the internet to get at them.

Dreamwidth has an integrated function for importing your livejournal - it lets you import:
  • Profile Data
  • Journal Entries
  • Journal Comments
  • Tags
  • Icons
  • Custom Groups

There is more information on importing from LJ (and other sites with the same codebase) to dreamwidth available at http://www.dreamwidth.org/support/faqbrowse?faqid=86.

Information on how to set up automatic crossposting from dreamwidth to other supported sites (such as Livejournal) is at http://www.dreamwidth.org/support/faqbrowse?faqid=98.

It's a good idea. The more people that move there, the more communities will spring up and the more activity will be there. It's just that so few people have decided to make the move...
