Haiti

Parliament has collapsed. The tax office has collapsed. Schools have collapsed. Hospitals have collapsed. There are a lot of schools that have a lot of dead people in them.

That's what the president of Haiti said this morning. Among those trapped inside the Parliament building but still alive was the president of the Haitian Senate, Kely Bastien.

There's a page up on DailyKos this morning with ways to help the relief effort in Haiti.

Fandom always does amazing things when help is needed, and it obviously is now. Is anyone interested in creating for and/or bidding on fan/original creations/foods/jewelry/art where the money goes to one of a few aid groups, such as the Red Cross, UNICEF, OXFAM, Wyclef Jean's or Jimmy Jean-Louis's (the Haitian from Heroes) organizations.

I'm happy to help organize a comm and manage things (although I will be very AFK on Saturday) if others are interested. Feel free to direct people to this post if you think they're interested in helping.

ETA I've set up help_haiti - for now, I'm just putting up some info about ways to donate now, and a poll about auction time-frame and donation methods.

I'm more than willing to donate money as well as creating art for charity bids, thank you for setting this up. And even better, I trust your expertise to set this up properly, heh; when us artists created a charity comm to collect money for the tsunami relief in 2004, we ran into a LOT of trouble/red tape trying to actually donate the money. I felt so bad for the frustrated admin, since they were just the fanartists who set up the charity comm and had no idea just how difficult it would be to just donate what was collected. :/

I think since fandom's done so many auctions, etc., since then, I've had a bit of a chance to see what's worked and what's been more problematic. But extra input, I think, is vital, so I made a poll on the comm - vote and give your thoughts?

It is a pretty awful situation I know Oxfam lost staff members there, as theirs was one of the many building to have collapsed :(
