heidi: (Utopia)
[personal profile] heidi
This is the first of my write-ups from Comic Con - the others will be showing up on AcedMagazine over the next few weeks (except for Past Life which will be held until it airs early next year), but these moments were personal, not while I was on the job, so I'm posting them here instead.

Now, I know that technically, it's a no-no to ask The Talent or TPTB about fanworks, but in certain circumstances, John Barrowman is different.

Last year at Comic Con, I'd wanted to ask him about "The Doctor and I", which he performed on his tour last year, because of a vid I'd done back in the fall of 2007 to his version of The Wizard & I, which he performed at a Christmas concert towards the end of 2006, but the line was ridiculously long and I didn't have the chance.

This year I went by when things were a little calmer, and asked him about the song as redone (clip here) and here's what he said:

1. He did the filking (ie changing the lyrics) himself; it's what he thinks Jack feels about the Doctor, at least circa 2008, pre-Utopia - it's all from Jack's perspective.

2. Both Stephen Schwartz and Russell Davis have given the okay for it to be a bonus track/easter egg on his next album - it now just needs clearance by the lawyers to be officially officialized.

3. When he sings it, he gets a fangasm, because he is such a fanboy and geek for the show that it overwhelms him a bit, that he gets to be a part of it, and still be a fan writing "ficcy songs" that he gets to perform for thousands of people.

So if anyone makes fun of you for ficcing, or vidding, or creating fanart, or anything else, tell them (or remind yourself) that John Barrowman does it, too. :D

So on Friday evening around 5 PM, I was sitting in a bar with [livejournal.com profile] gwendolyngrace, waiting for our wine, our cheese, and [livejournal.com profile] sarahtales, and we are going over our schedules for the next day.

I note that I have to leave the Heroes panel early so "I can interview David Tennant..." and I look up and OMGFLAILFLAIL he walks into the hotel bar, pulling his own suitcase because he is a woobie that way. He has someone with him - and then he recognizes people at the bar and heads that way, instead of to the elevator bank.

So I posted this to twitter:
Ogmo9mgo9g david tenntn walked right by me jst now. Want to bu him drinks 8:06 PM Jul 24th from twidroid

As you can tell, I could not type. No, I hadn't had anything to drink yet - that would change about five minutes later! - and I don't normally get fangirly like this in person - I mean, I've been reasonable and sane when meeting Springsteen! And Barack Obama! But Unexpected David Tennant?

I was in pieces, but I pulled it together.

I mean, he was at the bar. Bars have drinks, and I needed one for myself.

So I just walked over to the bar and he was there and had clearly just arrived - I mean, his suitcase was not five feet away! - and I took a deep breath and said, "Welcome to San Diego! Can I buy you a drink?"

And he said no, unfortunately he'd just arrived and needed a few minutes first, but he was really sweet about it and he is just that amazing-looking in person and his eyes are so fantastic.

So I just said, "Okay, see you tomorrow!" which he blinked at and I didn't realise until the next day why, and I went back to my seat and drank my delicious red wine and ate cheese and sort of surreptitiously watched him at the bar with other people until the guy who's directing EA's Dante's Inferno came over (yes, I know now about their #eafail, but I didn't know *at that time*) and asked [livejournal.com profile] sarahtales if he could borrow her bag because it showcased DI and he wanted to show it to the people at the bar, and Tennant left a few minutes after that.

But it was a lovely 20 minutes or so of DT watching, and when I got to interview him for AcedMagazine the next day, he didn't run screaming from me, but we did suss out that he didn't know what I was talking about when I'd said I'd see him on Saturday because he didn't know about the Introducing the Episode thing until mid-afternoon on Saturday.

Oh, and [livejournal.com profile] glockgal? He loved the Keep Calm and Carry Wands doorhangers - I gave him one, and he asked for a second so I gave him another one, too.

Official interview with David and Russell Davis (where he clears up that Supernatural quote, and fangirls about Jared and Jensen) coming soon!

Hee! And you get your fun, too!

Btw, Cherrybomb screening went well! I didn't get to see it then but did watch it on my own to, um, make sure the DVD worked right.

Very, very dark - but very well done!

I will happily take a photo of the DVD ;) but I just can't rip it - I fear the wrath of the distributors!
