Gwynne's told me about LJArchive before, but I've got LJBook versions of things - you click off all the little boxes and use Acrobat Reader 7 or better, and it's entirely searchable, etc.
(Gotta try that Archive again, though. I must have had some problem with it.)
There's a site - I think it's LJBook - which will create a PDF of your journal with comments. I don't think there's any way to have the comments backed up in such a way that you can restore them, though.
same here. i love icons, but in the end it's the text i'm interested in, and i use the search function all the time to find old posts, arguments, etc...
Thirding LJarchive. It's much friendlier in the long run than LJBook, and it gives you the option to save your journal(s) as HTML files after the fact. While it's true that there are no icons in comments, it does format comments correctly (something LJBook doesn't do).
Also, if you're a community maintainer, it allows you to back those up as well. It's far from intuitive but you're not going to have any trouble with it.
Honestly? I do it the low-tech way and add to my collection of screen-scrapes of journal pages every six months or so. (Save Page As, HTML only.) Sure, it means I don't back up new comments on long-ago threads, and it was a royal pain when I started for the first time and had to save about 200 pages - practically impossible, given the value of your time, for someone with 3,700+ entries. Better than nothing, though.
I may well investigate ljArchive, as per djinnj above; the only reason why I didn't in the past was because I didn't have .NET installed. But I do now, for some other application, so I probably should.
