My polling station this morning.

If you have children, take them to the polls with you. Remind them that for most of human history, people had no say in who would lead them, that violence and fear determined who controlled the institutions of power. Tell them that even in our own country, founded on the most noble of democratic principles, people have had to labor and protest and fight and even die to secure this right for themselves and for others. Tell them that there are many things you can do to exercise your citizenship, but this is one thing you must do. Tell them that election day is when you act not for yourself but for your community and your country. Tell them that although campaigns can be small and mean, election day is when our nation can also be bound by hope.

But if you take your kids, remember to tell them to not run out of the room and toward the street thus causing you to maybe vote for Pat Buchanan as you rush through your ballot. :)

Yeah, I was shocked to have to stand in a line -- for the primaries, there was no line. And there's a polling place every three blocks or less in my area. Then again, it's all apartment buildings -- probably 200+ people live on my side of my block alone. It was also cute to see a bunch of clearly first-time voters. Yay! Involvement!

I remember going to the polls with my parents as a tiny thing; they'd pick me up and have me line up the ballot, and they'd let me push down the lever with both hands. So I got to "vote."

What a great thing for kids. Really. (As long as they're not disruptive, like Ron Paul supporters or something.)

I thought about bringing my daughter to vote with me, particularly in such a historic election.

But when I went to the polls (6am) she was still sleeping, so it didn't occur to me until I'd been in line for an hour and a half and knew that she was awake.

Then again, she is only 18 months old, so I'm not sure there'd be any memory of it--but I still wish I'd done it.

That's how it looked here in Orange, NJ. So I ended up not voting this morning and waited until after work. I wore my Obama shirt under my Duran Duran shirt *hehehe*

Is it weird that that little paragraph made me tear up a little? Hope you don't mind, but I think I'm gonna link to that in a post.:)

I always remember going to the polls with my parents. Though it's compulsory here, so they probably didn't have much choice.
