Hope everyone on the eastern side of Texas is hunkered down for the storm. A lot of us in Miami have a twinge of guilt that Ike didn't hit us, as we thought it was going to last week. Good luck, and don't go outside during the eye, because the "dirty" side can come upon you without a warning.

MoveOn's giving away Obama buttons totally free--no strings attached. I just ordered a slew and if you want one, click this link to get a free Obama button. I'll have about 25 at EyeCon if they arrive in time, if anyone wants one - let me know.

Two weeks ago I did a little poll on what you thought was more ridiculous re Sarah Palin - but now, I'm wondering what people find scarier.
[Poll #1258577]

An ad about Sarah's hunting wolves from planes. What do those of you who *do* hunt think of it?

One more thing about the wolves..that is not hunting, that is slaughtering. I have a lot of hunters in my family and know a lot of hunters. These are people who go out during the season and follow the law in Ohio. Most hunt deer and turkey, they also dress and eat their kills.

I asked them about the whole shooting from the helicopter thing and they are appalled by it, it is not hunting, it is not respecting the land, and it is unlikely they are eating their "prey".

What scares me most is how scared the left is; it's almost as though they would rather lose. She's a big fat distraction, and we're sitting back letting it happen. I'm about 5 clicks past being over it, baby, and loving this column by Gail Collins in Wednesday's Times.

The first election I could vote in was 1992, and I didn't pay much attention to the process beyond 'I like Clinton, I agree with what I've heard are his positions on things, and all the Republicans I know are assholes.'

Subsequent presidential elections, I've paid more attention to the process, and this seems like the way the Democrats are EVERY FREAKING TIME:

What scares me most is how scared the left is; it's almost as though they would rather lose. She's a big fat distraction, and we're sitting back letting it happen.

The GOP goes on the offensive with completely specious and meaningless attacks usually based on semantics or fear-mongering rather than on actual issues, and the Democrats go "OMG OMG OMG! WHAT DO WE DO?? THEY'RE SO MEAN! AND PEOPLE ARE GOING TO BELIEVE IT AND THEN WE'LL LOOOOOOOOOOOOOSE!!!" I feel better about Obama than I do about the Democrats as a party, just because he seems to be doing a pretty damn good job of keeping his campaign on track and neither overreacting nor freezing up when the GOP b.s. gets tossed at him.

Um...all of it? I feel closer to the thing about the rape kits, but I think that over all, a willful ignorance of the regime she will largely be taking over is pretty frightening for everyone involved.

I'm not sure it's willful, as much as the fact that she hasn't had that much time to learn what should take someone years if not a decade or more to process and develop theories on.

"Sarah, what would be in the Palin Doctrine?"

1) The fact that she says she "didn't blink" when McCain asked her to be VP -- meaning she's as prone to snap decisions as he is.

2) That she keeps bringing up the damn "Bridge to Nowhere" and taking credit for it not happening.

I'd heard of most of those - but the hating cats is a new one.

I'm not sure which one to pick - there are a couple that really bother me. Well, most everything I've heard so far bothers me but out of your choices there are a few that are probably on equal 'bothering' ground. (Sorry, I can't think of an easier way to word that.)

I used to have major "new-clear" war paranoia, and it wasn't until the Wall came down that I finally was able to put those terrors aside. I didn't worry as much about Bush in 2000 on this front because the world just felt more stable than it does now. But if she came into office?

There's a song from Everything But the Girl about talking to kids, and it goes:
It's hard enough to watch the news, let alone explain it to a child,
to cast your eye cross nature, over fields of wheat and corn,
and tell him without flinching not to fear where he's been born.

When I had Harry, when I had Jon, when I had Cate, I listened back on that song frmo 1986 and thought we - the world, all of us - have come such a long way in such a little bit of time.

And these people want to start it all up again. You can't join NATO if there are border disputes involving your country! Does she not *know* this? What preconditions would she look at before Georgia or Ukraine could join?

All of the above! :O

I've indulged in drag hunting in my younger days, but I'd never hunt an animal, so can't really find anything positive to say about her wolf hunting.

I listened to part of her interview at ABC and felt so embarrassed for her! Charlie Robinson had to explain exactly what the Bush Doctrine was!

I think the argument that she is close to Russia therefore knows foreign policy is soooo silly.

Look, I think she's kind of adorable. I love that she had her hair in a pony tail during one of the rallies.

But that cute hairstyle covers up a brain that is just incapable of synthazising everything a President needs to know, and inside of her is a heart that's cold and selfish and cruel (those poor wolves).

Easy write-in...

...the fact that she doesn't know, she KNOWS she doesn't know, and she doesn't care. It's the real Bush Doctrine: the idea that experience, expertise, reason, logic and sanity are all superfluous and the only thing that matters is doing whatever your gut tells you, as quickly as possible.

The only thing is, we don't all have Daddy Bush and his friends to protect us from ever experiencing the consequences of our gut.

And to borrow a line I saw at the blog of an ex-Republican, "I can see the moon out my window, it doesn't make me a F-ing astronaut."

As a lifelong hunter, I think it's disgusting and very unsportsmanlike. The only animals that should ever be hunted by helicopter are ones that are an immediate danger to nearby defenseless human life. And no animal should be run to exhaustion by machine before being killed.

Not a hunter myself, but grew up in hunting culture and frequently enjoy the rewards of hunting (ie, when my dad fills my freezer with delicious, delicious deer meat), and it's disgusting. We have huge advantages over animals: they are stronger and bigger and faster, but we have malicious intent on our side (as well as guns, often).

It reminds me of those disgusting people who drug animals (often exotic animals) and then hunt them down in an enclosed space: it's cowardly, disgusting, and wasteful.

We're a northwoods hunting family, and THAT is NOT hunting. Here in WI, we have laws against shooting wildlife from moving vehicles and we protect wolves. If the wolf population becomes a danger, the state DNR live-traps them and relocates them to deeper wilderness. If what we just saw is Alaska's idea of wildlife management, they can keep it.

Hunting is an activity that is steeped in pioneer tradition. It is an instrinsic part of the culture here, meant to preserve the ecological balance, to put much-needed food on the table in an economically stressed region, and to preserve a way of life that's tied closely to the land. Any other motive for shooting a living thing in sport is simply unacceptable. There are plenty here who have no respect for that code, but that's certainly not the way the people we know go about it.
