We lost power yesterday evening, so a stockpile of links & info that I'd put together got lost - mostly recovered now.

1. Yesterday was a big mess in Miami - between the unexplained power failure at about 815 all over the beach, the tragedy with the crane that crashed into the house from Something About Mary, killing two, and the motorcycle accident on Macarthur Causeway that closed one of four main routes to the Beach and created major traffic tie-ups.

Hopefully today, things will be calmer and less catastrophic.

    3. Crowded House is coming back to the states! SQUEE! And I am (probably) going in NYC with [livejournal.com profile] jlh on April 30 - see more ticket info here! : flails with finnlove

ETA Tickets are purchased and [livejournal.com profile] jlh and I will be going, yay! General admission so if anyone wants to join us, we'd love to see you there. But just after I squee-ed about the ticket purchase going through, [livejournal.com profile] jlh said, "but heidi, where are you going to eat? didn't you hear that DTUT closed?"
    me: OMGSLDFHLWHJEIOJWLKDSD
    NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    [livejournal.com profile] jlh: yeah
    me: : wails
[livejournal.com profile] jlh: we were like, where will heidi go in new york?
    me: WHY WHY WHY? !?!?!?!?!?
[livejournal.com profile] jlh: with older places like that, it's either (1) the owners are kinda done or (2) there's a lease problem
    me: BUT STILL
    I had my bachelorette there!
[livejournal.com profile] jlh: I know darlin
    things fall apart
    the center cannot hold
mere anarchy is loosed upon the world
maybe we can get you out to brooklyn.
me: um, we could go to the cheese place? I have a wild and crazy love for fondue. [/ETA]

    4. If you follow [livejournal.com profile] otw_news, you've seen that membership in the Organization for Transformative Works is now open, squee! To reiterate what others have said, of course you don't and won't have to pay to use the archive as a reader or as a writer, but becoming a member gives you a formal way to support and be a part of the organization.
Read more about membership here, check out the fantastic roadmap and if you're ready to contribute $10 or more, you can join here.

    5. There's only a few days left to bid in this spring's Sweet Charity auction - I'm up for auction in the Vidding category - and there's a bunch of really talented people whose "prices" are still pretty un-pricey, so give it a look, bid and support R.A.I.N.N.

    6. Very amusing article from Mechanix Illustrated's November, 1968 issue (in other words, three years before I was born, this is what people thought would be; huh). An excerpt:
[...C]onveniences ease kitchenwork. The housewife simply determines in advance her menus for the week, then slips prepackaged meals into the freezer and lets the automatic food utility do the rest. At preset times, each meal slides into the microwave oven and is cooked or thawed. The meal then is served on disposable plastic plates. These plates, as well as knives, forks and spoons of the same material, are so inexpensive they can be discarded after use.

The single most important item in 2008 households is the computer. These electronic brains govern everything from meal preparation and waking up the household to assembling shopping lists and keeping track of the bank balance. Sensors in kitchen appliances, climatizing units, communicators, power supply and other household utilities warn the computer when the item is likely to fail. A repairman will show up even before any obvious breakdown occurs.

It's cute. What I love about futurist articles from pre-1980 is that they never look at the social implications of all the futurey changes they're suggesting, or the environmental implications. It's as if those concepts didn't exist at all - which I know is not true because "Silent Spring" was already out - maybe the concerns of what would happen to all those disposable plastic plates and plastic roads hadn't permeated certain corners of the scientific community?

[livejournal.com profile] redina tagged me to answer some vid-questions:

1.) When did you first start vidding?

Techncially, 1990, when I was in college. I worked for UTV, the campus tv station, and had access to a racked up set of 3/4 inch machines and eventually, an AMIGA for chyrons and I did a lot of vidding, although I didn't know then what it was. I'd been doing TV internships for years, and always liked it when the editors got to play, usually at the end of the year or in tandem with a crisis, and set images of news to music. The first one I'd ever worked with was in 1986 when I'd been working for a Jewish-programming group here in Miami and we did one to Streisand's "A Place for Us"; in 1991 I did one to Don Henley's "End of the Innocence" about the Gulf War, including clips from CNN and things I filmed on campus, and it started me on a rocket of doing them for lots of things around school, from the performing arts groups to Spring Fling and Bill Clinton's visit to the school in the Spring of 1992. I did a bunch about graduation and Senior Week for the Class of 1991, too. They're all on tape now, and I really need to convert them to DVDs.

    2) What would you say was your inspiration or motivation to start doing it?
I grew up on MTV, and maybe that's why I've always seen images - specific clips from things - when hearing certain songs? I have certain songs in my mind, and I match them up with clips and the only way to get them out of my head is to vid them.

    3) What do you or have you vidded?
Since I re-started vidding last year:
Doctor Who/Torchwood, Supernatural/J2, Heroes, Harry Potter, Chuck

Possibly am working on Gilmore Girls right now. Maybe. Heh.

    4) Where do you draw your inspiration from for vids? Is it the song? An idea? Someone else?
Always the song; I always start with a song and see where it takes me. The one exception was Good Together, which I did to celebrate the announcement of Season 4 of Supernatural - I wanted to do something celebratory, and scanned through my songs to find something that fit, and Tim Finn was. It's actually the first time I've vidded to a song from a Finn Brother, and it was lovely fun.

    5) What was your favorite video to make or do?
I loved working on Going Underground because I love the song and watching and playing with images of Jensen Ackles (with lots of Jared for good measure) was a terrific way to pass the time, but my favorite video to make was probably Almost Like a Prophecy, which is the Jack-centric one set to Barrowman's version of "The Wizard and I" because it is the first time I really played with special effects and told a story with the images, specifically, Jack is having a vision of a celebration that's all to do with him but just like Elphaba's prophecy, it's not exactly what he would have dreamed about at the time. It just felt *right* to do it.

    6) What was your least favorite video to make or do?
I wish I'd taken more time with Faith, which I did in a few hours the day after what turned out to be the end of Season 2 of Heroes. I needed to do it to avoid being miserable about the last part of the show, and I was very emotional when I put it together. A little distance might've been good. I still like it, but it could be smoother.

    7) Which video are you most proud of?
My two Sweet Charity vids. Here I was working with songs I'd never heard before, trying to make something for someone else, that would make her happy and make her feel like she was getting something good for her donation, that she'd be pleased to show and watch in the future, and yet still let my muse out to play. And I really (meep!) think-hope I did it. I love both of those videos, because they let me grow and stretch myself and took so much out of me, but in a good way. Rendering them felt like flying.

    8) What's the best feedback or comment you've ever gotten?
It's all, always wonderful. Anything that means I've touched someone, or made them laugh, or given them something to think about for a moment is perfectly terrific. But I have to give a special squee to [livejournal.com profile] bbennett, who gave me my first public vid review for Modern Girl.

9.)What is your opinion on clip theft?
Personally, I wouldn't do it but if someone wants to take clips from something I've done, I don't care. I would rather they didn't take a clip I'd done an effect on without crediting me, though.

    10) Favorite genre to vid to (comedy, angst, romance, drama, AU)?
Comedy and angst! I haven't yet played with an AU, and I'm a little nervous about it. I have something in mind and I think I need to do it just to see if I can.

    11) Favorite pairing(s)?
I don't vid for or about pairings.

    12) What just drives you up the wall when it comes to vidding?
I don't know enough! I feel like I'm a feral vidder in a lot of ways, still just getting my feet wet and nowhere near the amount of knowledge that I'd like to have, but other than [livejournal.com profile] vidding I'm not really sure where to go or look for more. But on the flip side I don't want to get so caught up in meta that I lose any purity of inspiration that I may still have.

    13) Is vidding a pastime, hobby or something to help gain experience to do more later in life?
Hobby. Although I want to do my kids' bar/bat mitzvah vids myself someday.

    14) What is your latest project or idea for your next vid if your muse isn't dead?
An AU vid that will be either J2 or Sam+Dean, and a Martha-centric vid that I can't start work on until I watch Ep 8 of Torchwood.

    15) Finally, what kind of words of wisdom would you offer someone who wants to vid/ is a newbie?
Just do it. Get a feel for the technology and the rhythm of a song, and use talking heads as little as possible until you're comfortable matching up mouth movements to lyrics. And make sure it stays fun.

I'm tagging [livejournal.com profile] chaeche, [livejournal.com profile] sabaceanbabe and [livejournal.com profile] sundancekid (who can save it and post it in four weeks or so if she wants).

It used to be like that for us when we lived in Aventura and commuted to Lauderdale. 30 minutes to get from our apartment by the golf course to the highway, 20 minutes on the highway to go 15 miles to the office.

    Ridiculous.

And oooh, if you want to scan those ads, I'm sure they'd be a hoot.

Yay New York! Let me know if you need restaurant suggestions or anything else or if you want to meet up. I'm pretty sure I'll be around that weekend.

Thanks for the vid answers. I admit to not watching that many vids, but when they're well done they're amazing.

    hadn't permeated certain corners

Oh, I find that the world is not really very big on permeation. Some examples:

    (1) Any TV show classed as science fiction invariably fills set backgrounds with flat surfaces full of randomly blinking lights... despite advances in computer interfaces over the last forty years.

    (2) JKR creates house elves, allows them to teleport inside Hogwarts, and tells us some are Voldemort-sympathetic. The idea of Voldemort assassinating Harry at any point by using an evil house elf apparently somehow didn't permeate her brain.

    (3) The collective failure of the elected representatives of America to grasp concepts related to global warming and incorporate them into legislation during the last quarter century.

It would be nice if we had a US Department of Logical Continuity and corresponding cabinet secretary.
