S3 of Supernatural has been ordered. And that means a 90% chance of there being an S4, because the fourth year is the syndication year, when the network's investment in the series has the potential to pay off in syndication dollars.

So? This is way good. Lots of squee on [livejournal.com profile] dean_sam, among other communities & sites.

Hmm, that's interesting. I know for other shows, the creators own it and the networks don't -- their benefit is the advertising revenue during the show run. This is why Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld both made about a quarter billion dollars the year Seinfeld was sold into syndication.

Yes, the producers and the production company. That said, more and more networks are producing their own shows precisely because they can get the syndication and DVD dollars. If the CW doesn't own the show, then they won't care about it getting to 100 episodes. (For contrast, HBO owns all the shows on their network.)

There seems to be buzz on that forum that this press release is a fake—spelling errors, weird syntax, no links, no one stepping forward. Sometimes networks will announce renewals before the upfront—it's new pickups they keep quiet—but it's still weird timing. Color me suspicious.

My response to that forum post:
"I'm going to have positive thoughts that Supernatural will be renewed. As to the validity of that post... First, the person posting has a low count, and second, some of the stats reported are... peculiar. I could've sworn I saw stats reflecting the 'reality' TV shows at 9pm had higher numbers over Supernatural.

I'll wait until official word and then I'll relax when it's confirmed Supernatural is renewed. :-) Plus, it'll be after tax day. ;-)"

But... but there is no confirmation, no link, nothing to indicate that it's real. I'll just wait for the official press release until I start celebrating, because from experience TV show sites aren't as reliable as the Leaky, HPANA and FA.

Okay, so keep in mind that I watch almost NO television whatsoever.

The title intrigues me.

What *is* "Supernatural?"

What *is* "Supernatural?"

A series that's attracting the attention of even non-fans because the SPN fandom is spreading. ;-) Or the shiny "IT" fandom of the moment.

All your base are belong to Supernatural:

Hm, I heard it was the third year... However, Dark Angel made SciFi Channel 'syndication' (kinda sorta) on just two seasons. I've also heard CBS and/or SciFi is interested in Supernatural as well. Rumours but not necessarily too unbelievable either.

Okay ..... erm ..... but what's it *about*? The premise? In 300 words or less. The link doesn't seem to take me to anything that would synopsize. :)

Supernatural is about two brothers who have been raised to fight the forces of darkness: demons, spirits, creatures, that sort of thing. The focus is on American mythology, and the boys drive around the country in a '67 Impala hunting evil things--basically driving in and out of a different horror movie every week. Their mom was killed by a demon when Sam was a baby and Dean was four, and their dad dragged them around looking for answers and saving people almost ever since. When we open the story, dad's missing, and the older brother, Dean (Jensen Ackles) wants Sam (Jared Padalecki) to help look for him. Sam goes with Dean for the weekend, they close John's case, and when Sam gets back, his girlfriend's dead on the ceiling, just like their mom was. Dean saves Sam from the ensuing fire, and Sam leaves with him, unwillingly dragged back into the hunting lifestyle he tried to escape. And so the real story begins! Dean is snarky and tortured, Sam is bitchy and emo and also tortured, and they act like real guys and brothers, except for the part where I very much doubt any "normal" brothers are quite so emotionally dependent on each other. *g* There's also a lot of classic rock, and the boys are very very pretty, although that's very much an added bonus.

Does that help? :D I can go drag up screencaps/video if you want! *enables*
