What I did this weekend:

1. Finally saw ( Attack of the Completely Terrible Script )

2. Got Douglas Adams' Salmon of Doubt, which I will read when I'm traveling next week. Meh, the sadness that this is the last book of his that we will get...

3. Went swimming. A lot. And finished another scene from SoC. 6 down... who knows how many to go..

How a discussion on fanfic challenges on FA turns into an analysis of canon

heiditandy: it didn't seem v. in character for Harry to be so self-sacrificing - he would never be the one to go to the guillotine for the sake of Draco & Hermione's romance
heiditandy: but why does it seem in character for Draco?
heiditandy: HUH? tell me that?
stacey: because draco is a self-aggrandizing fuck?
stacey: and he knows that Harry and hermione would have to think of him every day for the rest of his life?
heiditandy: and would name babies after him
heiditandy: also..
stacey: so being a dead martyr isn't so bad, really!
heiditandy: I can't help but thinkl that dying in the wizarding world isn't the same as it is for us Muggles

heiditandy: it's why I think that AK has to capture a soul and put it into the wand - that's what's so horrible about it. Not the dying - the being trapped and knowing that the person who killed you can somehow use a bit of your power and essence every time he does another evil spell.

heiditandy: I mean, really, though. How can dying be so bad when they know so *many* ghosts
stacey: James' soul in Voldie's wand....
heiditandy: if you know there's an afterlife, what is there to be scared of?

stacey: and, they live with the knowlege of their magical power
stacey: it's much more immediate than guns
stacey: they truly have the power to kill people

heiditandy: anytime, anywhere
heiditandy: but you can kill wtihout AK
heiditandy: You can levitate a mountain troll's club and drop it on someone's head
heiditandy: I mean, what Ron did in PS/SS would've killed a human.
heiditandy: It just wouldn't kill a troll.
stacey: the club thing is a good example
heiditandy: he was 11 and he did something that would've killed a person.
stacey: magical people have the power to kill at their disposal, even without AK
heiditandy: (foreshadowing, IMHO)
heiditandy: and with much less effort than muggles.
stacey: which is why they need to be taugh to harness and control the power
heiditandy: right.
stacey: so to take that magic and train it to deliverately steal the soul of someone, rather than just take their life...
stacey: that's EEEEEEEVIL!!!
heiditandy: right. isn't it?
stacey: EVIL!

heiditandy: and look at peter - he killed 13 muggles with an explosion
heiditandy: no souls captured.
