[livejournal.com profile] lowlands_girl just posted a lovely gift-fic for me inspired by my request for something featuring Regulus and music, and you can read it here.

It gave me a pondering - if Voldemort put a horcrux into a music box or some sort of wizarding player-piano (or self-playing sheet music) would it change the tune? Would it automatically become Greatest Hits of Queen or just random sinister tunes of evil?

eta also, is there any fic touching on the issues about/stemming from the fact that in CoS, two of Tom-via-Ginny's victims were girls her brothers were close to and one was a classmate who was obsessed with Harry, or exploring whether Ginny had any choice as to the victims?

Sinister Tunes of Evil

Isn't that one of the essentials lists on iTunes?

You talk like having a sudden permanent loop of "Don't Stop Me Now" is a bad thing. ;]

(I definitely feel Crowley's pain vis-a-vis the lack of understanding from Headquarters. ;] )

We're talking about something made no later than 1981, so there would be access to stuff by Queen. And Styx and Boston and Genesis and such.

Meep.

Now see, if the thing played an endless loop of "Come Sail Away," I think I would have to lay down in the middle of the freeway. =)

That's actually an essay worthy question. On the one hand, the ring didn't seem to change, but it was linked to evil in the first place, same with the locket. The cup, we honestly don't know if there was some evil linked to it at some point, actually in how it was acquired. So, would a good music box even become a horcrux, if it wasn't gotten in evil ways? Would it then turn evil just cause this is the WW? Music having a lot of symbolic connotations with the soul and healing, (re Fawkes song) so can music turn? If so, would it turn just cause of the act, not the actual spell that turns it into a horcrux? Or just cause of it's new owner?
Ok, so overthinking this.

This might be a little premature since I've just started posting it, but I wrote an H/G novel that deals with some of these issues (the entire thing is written, but only the first 5 chapters are posted so far.)

The basic premise is that part of Tom's soul is still alive in Ginny. And when she dates Colin briefly, Tom tortures her about the knowledge that she was instrumental in petrifying Colin in CoS. But she has kept this knowledge a secret from Colin and therefore, Tom says, he can never truly understand the real Ginny like Tom does.

I didn't touch on the Penny-Hermione connection, but that's a very good thought as well. I never put all of those together before. I don't suggest in my story that Ginny had any choice in who was petrified. I think it was more that Tom was able to interact with these specific people precisely because they were in close proximity to Ginny (he had to have gleaned some information about them through Ginny to know that they were Muggleborns) and therefore, those are the ones he chose to attack.

Anyway, that Tom/Ginny/Colin interaction is a very small part of the overall fic, but it's called For Your Love (http://www.siye.co.uk/siye/viewstory.php?sid=11951). If you're very interested, I'd be happy to email you the entire novel (as I've done for some other readers). But if this answers your question, that's fine too :)

I also seem to remember that Arabella's Very Secret Diary (http://www.sugarquill.net/read.php?storyid=1026&chapno=1) dealt with this a little bit. That Ginny was angry with Colin for bothering Harry and wrote about it in the diary, causing Tom to target Colin. And there may have been mention of the other victims as well, but it's been a long time since I read it.

You know how the other horcruxes all had to be broken or ruined in some way to be destroyed? Well, music is almost universally seen as a good thing, and Fawkes's song in GoF backs that up HP-wise. So, what if instead of breaking the music box, you have to fix it? Maybe the inherent evil of the horcrux 'breaks' the music box and it won't work. So you have to find something to make it work in order to destroy the horcrux.

Ooooh, I like that idea. And given Draco's talent with fixing broken machinery, if he gets co-opted by Not!Evil!Snape into doing something for hte good guys, I can see him becoming vaguely useful for that purpose.

Of course, knowing JKR, she'd then have his hair get trapped in the mechanism and kill him as soon as it's de-horcruxized by an inadvertent trapping of blond locks.

Well, if that much hair didn't break delicate cabinet hinges, he has a fighting chance. :-) I could totally see him working on it. And once it worked, he'd be the only one cultured enough to know what song it played, which would obviously be a clue to the next horcrux...I'm getting carried away. It would be fun, though.

I wrote an essay on the Ginny selection of victims, suggesting that Ginny felt isolated and homesick at school and didn't get much support or attention from her brother's except Percy, and then Percy became too interested in Penelope to pay attention to Ginny so that as Ginny wrote about all this in the diary it gave Tom a steer to which victims to select so that Ginny would feel that she was somehow carrying out her secret wishes subconsciously.

It would only become Queen's Greatest Hits if Voldemort left it in his car too long.

*snort* Whatever. If anyone wants to genuinely complain to me about the originality of my fic, go ahead. But do it to me, and not anonymously.
