This is probably a dumb question, but how to businesses/employees deal with this? Do most allow time when a watch is called (the one time I had one here in NoVA, my organization closed), are people expected to take vacation if they have it, or what? Should businesses start offering 'storm days' as part of the benefits package?

I hope all goes smoothly for you if you evacuate.

Our whole company will shut down if it is too dangerous to come in to work. Employees determine this when they get up in the morning.

Garbage cans flying down the street and/or flooding on the roadway = too dangerous.

Someone will take the file server home with them the night before the storm. Someone else (probably me) will take the back up tapes. We will reconvene when the weather passes.

If the building is gone, we have a backup location.

That's the official plan.

Yeah. They will close down for hurricanes.

Last year, we missed more school than was originally projected for, so we lost a few teacher workdays in the spring, including one when we had already booked a trip to the northeast. The teachers were okay about kids missing on those days, though, because we didn't know until, I think, January which specific days off would be eliminated.

Thanks for the good wishes. Most employers will likely be closed tomorrow, and people will go during lunches and after work today to stock up on things. I'm off in a few minutes myself - alas, so much for the catching up on online stuff I was going to do today...

I think, at this point, I never will.

They are fine. THey are trying to sell their house and...well...you know how the housing market is down there right now. My mother is just so ready to get out of there and more hurricanes just reinforces it, you know?

*hugs*

Are you coming to Orlando? We should get together for dinner or something....

It doesn't look like it's going to get up our way until Wed, but if it comes across the state, Orlando's not going to be a whole lot better, I wouldn't think, though at least it isn't RIGHT in the scheduled path.

Jeez, and I thought it was shaping up to be an uneventful season!

I don't know, but I will keep y ou posted. If we do, it'll be because Orlando is less likely to lose power than Miami Beach is.

Why is Central Florida safer, if Ernesto comes over that region, too? Just because you won't get the sea surge there?

*fingers crossed* Stay safe!

I've wondered that too, since my mom's "evacuation plan" is the same thing, go to friends in Orlando (she lives in SW FL, and I'm not even going to bug her about leaving for this one, she'd just laugh at me, "it's just a category 1", but she's also not under any watches/warnings yet).

I tried to get her to come up to Indiana for Charley, but she just waited it out in the back hallway with her dogs. Gah. Heidi, I hope your trip is uneventful and everyone stays safe!

Land Coverage

Orlando is very centrally located. Unless the storm comes on shore as a strong cat 3 or higher, Orlando just gets a few really nasty but intermittent storms. There is plenty of land on either side of Orlando to diffuse a storm.

I am just north and east of Orlando. (Literally by one lake, I am in an area called Sanford.) If Ernie stays on his projected course, it is going to be mighty windy at my place.

The hotels are less likely to lose power than we are here in Miami. My house is extremely solid with hurricane shutters on, but it's also very very boring in the days after a storm if the schools are closed and the power off, and unlike last October, it'll be bloody hot, too.

Hmm, well I'm in North Florida (Gainesville) and inland, so I should be fine. I'm more worried about my best friend, who is in Tampa, and my mom and my grandparents, who are in Melbourne/Port St. Lucie, respectively.

Hopefully it will turn and fizzle out over the water, but that is unlikely. Hope you're okay, Heidi!

We're in a non-evac zone and we've got a hurricane cabinet full of canned goods and a new cookstove, so we're just going to wait and see... although we are no longer directly in the Cone of DOOOOOOOOM, who knows what could happen?

Stay safe...

We're planning (at long last) to take Meg back to MouseWorld on September 13. I'm in deadline hell so I have to plan everything in advance. *weep*

(Actually, this weekend we're taking her to see the Disney Princesses on Ice, which she doesn't know about yet... hee!)

Really, sincerely, thanks - I just have major blahs about the doooooooooooooom, mostly because nobody wants to go to Disney with me, and I had a great room rate at the Swan/Dolphin.

We booked at the Value Resorts in September (which seem to be like motels with giant things tacked on) because the rate was $59/night. And I'm bewailing the fact that Meg is three and therefore an official Child.

Staying at Disney is so weird to me. I feel like we're cheating. I'm used to childhood trips, where we got up at the crack of dawn and went to WDW and spent allllllll day and then our poor tired parents had to drive us home. (Of course, this is because my parents live only 1.5 hours away from the parks.)

(If I had Animation Powers, I'd make you a "You're in the cone of DOOOOOM! -- what are you going to do now? We're going to Disney World!" icon. ;)

I've been too sick to even think about water and boarding up and all that let alone figure out how to pack up and move anywhere. So I'm a tiny bit thankful we are no longer in the 'cone of uncertainty' at the moment. And we have yet to find anyone to fix the stupid roof after Wilma so... ugh. I just don't want to deal with it all. I think I'll go back to bed instead.
