Oh, I don't know. Personally, I think that flying right toward the Astronomy Tower, when it had a great big Dark Mark hanging over it, constituted criminal negligence at the very least.

What Dumbledore should have done was send a Patronus to carry a message to the members of the Order at the school and Flooed the Ministry Aurors from Hogsmeade. He still could have been killed after that, but at least I'd have felt that he tried to get back-up, and that he wasn't willfully catapulting himself and Harry into danger.

He probably thinks that depressed people are leaping to their deaths from the Astronomy Tower. Don't tell him about the old man who was blasted over the parapet by a blasting curse Avada Kedavra.

You can reverse-engineer the psychology here fairly easily.

"I am a wrongful death attorney. I believe in advertising, and indeed require it, if I am to stay in business. That's why I also pay for late-night and daytime TV ads.

"The cheapest form of advertising, though, is online. Web sites which use specific keywords such as last will and testament are the most likely to relate to my business.

"I should therefore use Google to find as many such sites as I can, and send their admins e-mail asking for a free link to my own site. Most will ignore me, but some will respond, and of those some will create the link. Since my cost in asking is effectively zero, I may as well ask the maximum possible number."

I'm wondering if the spammer used some sort of autobot to do the searching and spamming automatically. The letter certainly has that Form Letter Aroma to it.

Absolutely. That's why it says "astronomytower.org" instead of Astronomy Tower; the domain name is easy to abstract automatically from the Google-caught URL.

It's the atrocious typos that keep getting me. Can you sue for Wrongful Beta Review? Assuming they had one, of course.
