Applications can now be submitted for FictionAlley.org's three Katie O'Brien Scholarships.

A year ago this month, Katie O'Brien, one of FictionAlley's longtime writers, lost her battle with leukemia. Even while she was in the hospital fighting against her illness, she continued to find strength as she wrote her story, assisted by her father, Dave O'Brien. As her father said, "Katie always wanted to be a writer, and she used this forum [FictionAlley] to fulfill her dreams. Correspondence with those who read and enjoyed her story sustained her even during the worst of times."

Katie finished writing her story six days before she died; her father continued to upload those chapters onto FictionAlley through the spring.

When we at FictionAlley learned that Katie had passed away, we realised that the best way we, as a site, could honor her memory would be to provide other writers, as well as artists and those who give back to the community, with some help in making their dreams come true. With the permission of Katie's family, we have established three annual scholarship awards of $500 — the Katie O'Brien Memorial Scholarships for Writing, Art and Community Service. The scholarship funds can be used for tuition and/or books and materials.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The criteria and application information for the three scholarships - one each for writing, art and community service, are shown

WRITING:
Date: Materials must be submitted no later April 30, 2006.

Eligibility: Current full-time students who, during the 2006-2007 school year (August, 2006 - July, 2007) are studying towards a degree at the undergraduate or graduate level, or the equivalent thereof.

Award: One $500 Katie O'Brien Memorial Scholarship for Writing award for one year only.

Criteria

Scholarships are awarded on the basis of excellence in writing.
Applicants should submit a manuscript of non-fiction, exposition, fiction, drama and/or poetry. Individual pieces of writing may be any length, but the entire entry must be 10 to 20 pages of typed, double-spaced manuscript in no smaller than 11 point type on pages that would, if printed, measure 8-1/2 x 11" with 3/4" margins. An excerpt from a work longer than 20 pages is acceptable.
Applicants will be evaluated, and the winners chosen, by FictionAlley administrators and a published writer.

ART:

Eligibility: Current full-time students who, during the 2006-2007 school year (August, 2006 - July, 2007) are studying towards a degree at the undergraduate or graduate level, or the equivalent thereof.

Award: One $500 Katie O'Brien Memorial Scholarship for Art award for one year only.

Criteria

Scholarships are awarded on the basis of excellence in creative visual arts.
Portfolio should contain 12-15 scans or photographs of two- or three-dimensional, original art work. Works must include at least one of the following: drawings, painting, crafts, ceramics, printmaking, sculpture, CGI, fabric-based art, etc.
Applicants will be evaluated, and the winners chosen, by FictionAlley administrators and a professional artist

COMMUNITY SERVICE:
Date: Materials must be submitted no later than April 30, 2006.

Eligibility: Current full-time students who, during the 2006-2007 school year (August, 2006 - July, 2007) are studying towards a degree at the undergraduate or graduate level, or the equivalent thereof.

Award: One $500 Katie O'Brien Memorial Scholarship for Community Service award for one year only.

Criteria

This award is to be made on the basis of community service, character and leadership qualities.
Describe up to three of the most significant unpaid volunteer activities you have participated in by the date of your application. Community service projects may end after the program deadline as long as you started the community service prior to the program deadline. Include a discussion of your specific duties and responsibilities in each activity as well as your specific accomplishments or the results you achieved. Attending meetings of organizations does not qualify as community service, nor do activities completed for your family or relatives (babysitting for siblings, for example).
Your Submission must fit on no more than four typewritten, single-sided, single-spaced pages, with no smaller than 11 point type and must measure 8-1/2 x 11" with 3/4" margins.
Applicants will be evaluated, and the winners chosen, by FictionAlley administrators and a judge to be named in the Spring of 2006.

The application page is here, and if you're still interested in helping the fund, you can donate or order a wristband here. We're fully funded for 2006, 2007 and 2008, but we hope to keep the scholarship awards going into the future, so donations and wristband purchases will go a long way to making that happen.

The winners can't be residents of countries to which the US has trade embargos. Otherwise, no restriction.
