Was it Karkaroff who went into the Goblet room, or Barty polyjuiced into Karkaroff?

A very good question. If it wasn't Barty polyjuiced into him, I fail to see the point of that scene. What the heck would Karkaroff have been doing in there otherwise? Stealing the Hogwarts silverware?!

OMG!! THAT'S IT! *DOH* I wondered where that random scene came from!! I thought, jeez, if anything should have been cut, that's one scene I wouldn't have missed, but, but, now it makes sense!

But, I wonder how many other viewers (aka not rabid fans like me) would have gotten that bit; it did go buy very quickly.

OMG you are BRILLIANT.

You have shed light on one of the things that confused the living daylights out of me!

That's got to be it!

That never crossed my mind, but that's a good explanation for the scene. I just figured it was a red herring sort of thing.

Also, we still on for Friday?

I just thought it was another random and kind of pointless Newell Scene (tm).

Maybe he's trying to make sure no one's sneaking into the Goblet room?

But no, it would make more sense if it were Barty going to put the slip of paper in. If it was, though, Barty Jr. should have confessed it at the end. ::is so confused::

I thought it was there attempt to make Karkaroff look guilty.

Second that. But it was poorly done. There was Sirius's assertion that he was a Death Eater and then the Pensieve scene too, but Karkaroff was very seldom actually seen by HARRY and so the red herring thing with Karkaroff never really worked, IMO. It just seemed extraneous and pointless.

Yep, wondered myself what was up with Barty. But the your dea has merit. To bad no one but us Potterheads would get it.

I wondered what that was all about myself. It seems pretty pointless otherwise.

Might be wrong, but didn't they mention that Barty had turned into someone else besides Moody or Karkaroff? Flashed by and I've only seen it once, but there was a comment about polyjuice and it didn't refer to Barty --> Moody....

I thought it was to make the audience (the ones who hadn't read the book, of course) suspect that it was Karkaroff who had it in for Harry, especially after Sirius warned Harry about him.

Though I thought the hints about Moody were too broad, but if I hadn't read the book I'd probably be like 'wtf?' now anyway.

I don't think it was Barty pretending to be Karkaroff...Moody would have had just as much right (and opportunity) - if not more - to hang out near the Goblet of Fire than Karkaroff would, right?

I think it was a (bad) red herring. Karkaroff is a much stronger character in the book, and he worked as a sort of decoy. Especially as there was virtually no clue that Moody wasn't really Moody (that I can think of) off hand. Here, though, Karkaroff was rather like a plastic action figure in the movie - he had to be physically present, because Durmstrang couldn't be without a headmaster, but otherwise, he didn't contribute one single thing to the movie as a whole.

There were two scenes that were "important", but neither were well-explained via movie-canon. First, Snape re: the Dark Mark had no point if they didn't portray Karkaroff as a coward who runs from Voldemort's return, and second, as an ex-Death Eater who sold out his partners-in-crime to get out of Azkaban, wouldn't you think Barty Jr would have some sort of vendetta against Karkaroff? Hrm...

Anyway, what I'm really trying to say is CAUTION: Plot Hole. Try not to fall in!
