We have left our house and headed to a hotel here on Miami Beach, because the threat of a month without power, including hot water, makes us have the colliwobbles. And it's not like it is when 50% of the city doesn't have it so you can go to a friend's to do the laundry or take a shower - as of this afternoon NINETY per cent of the city doesn't have power, and it's the same in the county to the north. Plus we have a boil water order for the city, which means we can't even really let the kids into the tub or shower in case it gets into their mouths. So, no. And FP&L has restored power for most of the keys - it seems that they were *prepared* for restoration there, but not so much prepared for most of dade & broward ALSO being very impacted by this Category Three hurricane, so they're not very set to FIX things here. Not sure what's up in Naples, though.
Not sure what's the plan for the rest of the week - we have no school through October 31, so I am trying to talk my mom into coming with me back up to Disney, but Aaron has to be back in the office tomorrow - his Ft Lauderdale office lost about 20 windows on the two floors, so that is closed for the rest of the month, as are the courts, but his office itself is actually open. The parks are all full of trees, the museums are closed for a few more days, so there's just not so much to *do* here. Will see. But internet is happening, yay, and the movie thing in the hotel has Hitch Hiker's Guide *and* Star Wars, so at least we can be amused within the room.
All in all, we're glad to be safe and sound - we're just hoping that FP&L gets their act together, and SOON!

My mother said she is praying that a FP&L executive lives in her neighborhood. hahahaha

Thinking of you, boo. Hug the kidlets for me. :D

Mom just called me... she's fine, car got dented again but at least a TREE didn't fall on it like last time. She and the bf were driving, trying to find anywhere for him to purchase a suit because he has an interview on Thursday (at the hospital, so presumably it will still happen), and they are nearly to Orlando without finding anyplace with power.

Oh no - I mailed Catie's books on Saturday!!! CRAP. I hope they'll come back to me if they can't deliver to you...

Good to hear they're ok - and man, I would like to drive to Orlando. Disney is open! And you know I like it there!

I was so relieved to hear you are all well, although POOH to being without power and water! I hope that you and the kidlets stay amused in the hotel.

MSNBC was just showing pictures of the schools in Ft. Lauderdale and they are really terrible looking. Windows blown out and venetian blinds hanging out like ribs.

The irony is, Harry's school has power. And all its windows.

WOW! Well, that is good! It would be horrible if they had lots of repairs and had to be closed for a month.

hope the good movies continue at the hotel!

You know, if you have a chance, I was about to email you, Catherine and Connie - we're trying to clear out the queue to launch the new system... If you can help, just go back onto the FACoders list for the next week-10 days...

I'll do what I can. Can you or someone else reapprove me for FAC? I can get someone else to change my user status. Is there anything else I can help with while you're recovering from Wilma?

Here's hoping that their estimate of how long it takes is too long. A month! Ack!

I have your CDs ripped and I'll hang onto them until you're back in your home.

Sounds like a great time for a trip, if Aaron can swing the time. California is always nice.

Oh, thank you SO much! Your CD isn't done, because, well, I have no power. But I wil lfinish it when we do! And yes, I am at the Flamingo address. Technically.

Glad to hear you're all okay. My sister has escaped Boca Raton with her two little ones to live with my brother in Jax Beach. I really hope things are repaired for you faster than expected.

Yay for hotel movies! Hang in there.

Oh, yay, you have power! I don't know where the blazes you did, but good for you. :D

NBC was saying they've restored about 60K in Dade already, but about 200 substations were damaged - that's more the root of the problem.

Fled to a hotel. Too dangerous to try and bathe kids at home with a boil water order, IMO. Plus, Aaron has to be back in the office tomorrow, hence why we didn't fleeeeeeeeeee to Disney again. I posted on your LJ with my contact info, then deleted it to keep said info private. Did you get it?

Glad to hear you guys are alright, though the lack of power and all the other mess can't be any fun at all.

I don't blame you for not wanting to do the no eckeltricity and boiling water thing. Not good.

Oh, and I've just friended you, btw. Hope that's okay.

Oh..I feel for you with three kids in a hotel room...eeeep, but as you said...better than a house with no power or water. We got some wind and rain and lost power momentarily about 10 times, but otherwise faired much better than you all. I'd invite you all up here, but we'd be in school and work and all. Disney sounds like a great option.

Good luck, and stay safe. Wallace and Gromit is a great movie...but I guess the theaters don't have power...urgh...anyway. I'm thinking of you.

Thinking of you and yours, dear. Friend J has sourced a rental car from Hertz and will be making the trip to Naples tomorrow -- many thanks for the offers of help! A neighbour checked out her house and there's not too much damage from the outside, at least, which is a plus. Keep smiling, and let us know if you need anything!

Lovely. Saw that they were fast at work with repairs and handing out food and water in the keys. Huh? Wasn't there a mandatory evacuation? Have they opened the highway for people to come back? Not gonna make 'em leave next time if the people who stayed behind think of a Cat 3 hurricane as a slight inconvienence. *snarky on illegal activity* :)

Glad to hear that you're all ok and sorry about no power. As I said earlier, glad that it's not 90 degrees though. And Yay for Star Wars!!!

If you think FP and L is bad, you should try Lee Co. Elec. Co-op. I haven't seen a truck anywhere yet! Cape Coral isn't bad but of course, I'm in the bad part but I guess the inland parts of the county really got it. And naturally, I'm on well water so having no electricity means no water.

*sigh* The price of life in Florida.

Just glad you're safe but it seems like the worst part of a hurricane is the aftermath and trying to get back to "normal"! Too bad you can't flee to Disney. How bad was Wilma, as far as experiencing it?

Do you have any idea how long you'll be without power for? Are they serious about it being a month???
