No one is suggesting that mayors or governors in the afflicted areas, nor the federal government, should be able to stop hurricanes. Lord knows, no one is suggesting that we should ever prioritize levee improvement for a below-sea-level city, ahead of $454 million worth of trophy bridges for the politicians of Alaska.

But, nationally, these are leaders who won re-election last year largely by portraying their opponents as incapable of keeping the country safe. These are leaders who regularly pressure the news media in this country to report the reopening of a school or a power station in Iraq, and defies its citizens not to stand up and cheer. Yet they couldn't even keep one school or power station from being devastated by infrastructure collapse in New Orleans — even though the government had heard all the "chatter" from the scientists and city planners and hurricane centers and some group whose purposes the government couldn't quite discern... a group called The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

- Keith Olberman, September 5, 2005

Now, contrast that with this:
What I’m hearing is they all want to stay in Texas. Everyone is so overwhelmed with the hospitality.

And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway so this (she chuckled)--this is working very well for them.

- Barbara Bush, September 5, 2005

And then remember where the buck stops:
[President Bush] directed the development of a new National Response Plan (NRP) to align Federal coordination structures, capabilities, and resources into a unified, all discipline, and all-hazards approach to domestic incident management. . . .The end result is vastly improved coordination among Federal, State, local, and tribal organizations to help save lives and protect America's communities by increasing the speed, effectiveness, and efficiency of incident management.

National Response Plan for Dept. Homeland Security, created in December of 2004, effective as of April, 2005 (it's a PDF and if you don't have a PDF reader, or don't want to download the whole thing, an excerpt can be found here

I'm sorry, but the summary of that national response plan sounds like the most obfuscatory bullshit I've ever read.

I must assume that Barbara Bush has never seen the shelters. Surely, if she had seen the shelters, she would not be so horrid as to actually think that these people are happy living in places that were only intended to hold large crowds for a few hours.

I sure would like to know where Barbara buys her rose-coloured glasses. I could use a pair.

Well, it's true that local interviews in Austin, anyway, feature people saying things like "We love it here. The people in Austin are treating us like royalty."

Still, Mrs. Bush's phrasing, particularly that chuckle, seems grotesque.

It's no wonder Dubya is so badly fucked up, confused, and inarticulate. Imagine what you'd be like, if your mother looked like George Washington and talked like George III.

I'd really love to bitch-slap Barbara Bush right now...

I'm watching Shepard Smith on Letterman right now, talking about "thousands of people coming out of the sewage with no place to go"...You can tell his eyes have been opened by Katrina...

Thanks for the link to [livejournal.com profile] katrinaskeepers. I'm planning to make a Hermione hat/mittens set to auction, and that seems as good a place as any.
