I was wondering, given all the speculation about HBP, is there any death that people would find more troubling than Sirius's in OotP, so I decided to take some speculations - no actual spoilers, there's nothing in here that hasn't been part of speculation over the last two years. It's behind a cut because it's kind of long, not because there are spoilers, but it's possible there may be spoilers in the comments, so if you want to take the poll without seeing the comments, click on the "post a comment" link rather than the number of comments link.

I needed ticky-boxes! There were a couple of choices that made me go, "Oh no!" (erm, the death of Lupin and Snape being irrevocably evil) but Grawp/Hermione made me want to gouge my eyes out with a spoon and was extremely troubling, so I went with that. ;)

I don't think anything could possibly break my heart more than the thought of Lupin dying. If he dies, I'm probably leaving the fandom. I'll still read Book 7, but I would lose all joy in ficcing if Lupin died. :S

I would be equally devastated by Ron dying and by Ron or Ginny turning Evil (especially Ron), and I would be distressed-but-not-crushed about R/S shagging women. I do not want to EVER see Umbridge again.

I expect Dumbledore to die before the series is over, so although it will be upsetting, it won't be an OMG NOOO moment, either.

Oh, and I would be crushed if Lupin died - far worse than when Sirius died - but on the grand scale, Ron dying would be the worst.

Yeah me too. Not because Ron's my favorite character, (though he is) but because to me, Evil!Ron would make no kind of sense in the plot. :\

The only thing worse than the death of Sirius would be the death of Harry.

I just can't even think about that.

Ron dying kind of makes me say OMG NOOO, but mainly because it would seem a little *too* well-designed to make Harry miserable. But it wouldn't be unbearable. No death in the Potter-verse would really, really upset me except for Harry's. He's the character on which the universe hinges, for me, and if he goes, so goes the whole universe.

I voted Ginny being evil, though I think it's more likely that she'll die outright. I'll be a mess (again) if that happens.

You didn't give us an option for Harry dying. Of course, Harry dying even at the end of book 7 would probably kill me. I don't want Harry to be some tragic hero who has no chance for happiness. The poor boy has suffered enough, Jo. KTHXBYE.

Though I must say One Big Happy Weasley Family would piss me off too :))

When (not if as I'm certain it's going to happen at some point before the end of Book 7 *sigh*) my beloved Snape dies, I am going into mourning. Weeds and wailing and all.

And then I'm going to dust myself off, pull myself together, give Jo a great big raspberry and blithely skip into canon-denial AUverse, clutchingSeverus's hand tightly, despite his cursing me up one side and down the other...until he shuts up because he realises that a) he's still alive in my head and b) he gets Draco booty...

Practically any death will make me sad (well... not Grap and Coyle... any death of a well loved/hated character), but Umbridge coming back would be even worse for me, as it would ruin the entire book. She's one of the 'things' (for want of better word) I dislike most about OotP. I don't want her back - ever.

It's also Crabbe, not Grabbe... I was trying to make a joke... Grabbe and Coyle instead of Crabbe and Goyle.... *sigh* Such a shame when jokes have to be explained - it takes all the fun out of them.

While having one of the kids generation turn evil would be horrible, having Snape be and always have been EVIL would not only destroy the only redeemed character in the books it would shatter whatever remnants of image of Dumbledore being 'infallible'. The repercussions of that would completely rewrite the context of just about everything that has come before in the books.

None of those made me go "Oh NOES!", apart from the ROn Dying option, which made me shiver when I thought about it. Blimey, I've never realised before now just how attached I've got to him. It's weird.

I chose Ron, because I think it would be the worst overall – I don't think I would ever have the heart to read any of the books again if that happened. For HBP, though, I fear the death of Dumbledore – it would be really sad, considering that (it looks like) he and Harry will be working together against Voldemort in this book.

Ron dying with Ron turning evil coming in a close second. As long as the weasley's are left untouched I'll be fine actually.

Need ticky boxes. There are a fair number of things up there that would make me go "Oh no!" so I went with the one I thought was most possible.

Of course, if you added "All of the Weasleys but Percy dying!" that would have changed my vote.

I chose Sirius falling through the veil, and here's why. Lupin dying would, of course, kill me and make me weep uncontrollably, but with Sirius already dead, I'd have the 'comfort' that they were at least 'together' in death, if you know what I mean.

And as far as finding out they've been shagging women... well, I already live in Denial, so what's one more thing? ;)

There's canon, there's fanon, and there's AU's. I look at Remus and Sirius as the greatest love story never told, not because of 'embraced like a brother lover' or joint Christmas presents, but because when i read (and re-read) the books, that is what I see and interpret behind the scenes now. (I didn't at first - at all) These books aren't about the adults - they're about Harry. Fandom, for me, is about interpreting the books, yes, but it's also about the backstory that we don't see or know, and exploring the possibilities of JKR's created world. If I were solely interested in authorial intent, I'd never read or write fanfiction, nor would I be as involved in fandom as I am. Yes, I'm a stickler with regard to characterizations within fanfiction, but I'm more about the internal consistency within a story. Make me believe it. To me, that's what fanfic is about. And that's what makes fandom as much fun as it is for me.

Ticky boxes are your friends!!

I voted for "Remus and Sirius shagging women" because it was the one that actually made me say NOOOOOOO out loud.

Being serious though, if Ron or Lupin died, a part of my soul would go with them.

An interesting question! I'd be gutted if the people you mentioned turned out to be irrevocably evil, and I will personally be heartbroken if Snape or Lupin dies, but for Harry, I think Sirius falling through the Veil is the worst thing that could possibly happen. That's why I was so gutted when I read it, and why I'm still gutted now. As I said at the time, I'd rather it had been almost anyone else (except Harry, Ron or Hermione) who died in OotP.

Haven't read the other comments for fear of spoilers, so apologies if you've read this kind of thing ten times already today!

Of the items on the list that I take seriously, I voted for Draco being irrevocably evil - but that's slightly different from Sirius dying, for me. It's not that I'm so attached to the character that I'd howl if I saw something happen to him that I don't want, but that if he's that shallow it will sour my impression of the books as a whole. That would make me feel bereft.

And I certainly won't be happy if Lucius dies.
