Not really a surprise. Wonder what right-winger from a minority group (a double whammy since it gets Bushie points for being inclusive while still putting an ultra-Conservative on the Supreme Court) will get the nod? God help us! ;)

I work in DC now, but grew up in Buffalo, NY. Toronto is looking better and better, in spite of the sucky winters.

It'll take at least half that time to put someone new on the bench.

Let's all hope it takes twice as long as you're saying - maybe she'll have to stay on the bench until there's a better president.

The reason she gave wasn't her age. It was to spend more time with her ailing husband.

Although it begs the question, if Rehnquist can stay on while he's ailing rather than spend more time with his family, why can't she?

Cancer patients don't require constant supervision the way someone suffering from Alzheimer's does. Rehnquist isn't going to forget his family or colleagues, and has a chance (however slim given his age) of recovery; O'Connor's husband will lose his memory, and as yet there is no cure for his illness.

My grandfather has Alzheimer's, so I sympathize with her reasons, and I'm trying very hard not to get too defensive. I'm terrified that W now has a chance to leave his mark on SCOTUS, do not mistake me on this. But I can understand if she feels like this is the right time and the right reasons for her to step down.

Ah - I spoke too quickly. I didn't realize Alzheimer's was the issue.

Speaking as the daughter of one parent with Alzheimer's and another who had dementia, I do indeed understand her decision.

Doesn't mean I'm any less afraid of what's going to happen next though.

Someone I loved had Alzheimer's too, so I can sympathize with her. However, she doesn't have a normal job. She is one of the most powerful people in the country, someone whose retirement at this juncture is going to send shock waves throughout our legal system, our rights as individuals, and our future. Some things, the course of an entire nation, for instance, are more important than one's personal concerns, no matter how poignant.

I must respectfully disagree, simply because no one IS their job. At the end of the day, she's still just another human being, even if one who does have a powerful position. She's an older woman who wants to spend her time with her husband before he dies. As I said earlier, I'm crushed and terrified by what her replacement could mean for the rest of us. If there were evidence that she's been pushed out because of politics, I could be angry at her; but if it honestly is about her husband (and at this point I don't know of any evidence to the contrary)...her current position is not something you can do half-heartedly.

I'm scared, but I will not blame Bush's idiocy on her.

I've been battling with this all day and I have to say, I agree.

With great power comes great responsibility. I admire her for stepping down for her family but at the same time, she MUST know that her decision is going to affect millions of people. Women, minorities, etc.

I'm not in her shoes but if I was, I'd seriously think I'd stick out 3 more years.

Yeah, it sucks but at the same time, it's not entirely unexpected (to see a resignation in Bush's term).

Time for the Democrats to get their act together.

P.S. Did you still want that Cheetah Girls' song? Let me know if I can e-mail it to you. :)
