Jun. 17th, 2005 05:14 pmI've been trying since last night to come up with words for how amazing I thought Batman Begins was, and all I keep coming back to is "I love Gary Oldman, I love Christian Bale, I love Michael Caine, I love Liam Neeson, I love Morgan Freeman, I love love love whoever it was that played Crane and I don't quite get why Katie Holmes was doing a Drew Barrymore impersonation but perhaps it's because it would've been weird, continuity-wise, for Drew to actually have played that part because she was Sugar in Movie #3, which, coincidentally, also starred Nicolle Kidman, but the meta of that was a little too much for me.
I've seen a lot of Gary Oldman movies while up in the wee hours of the night with Cate - Sid & Nancy, Prick Up Your Ears, Dracula, Immortal Beloved - even Fifth Element, which I have always enjoyed, and seeing him in a role where he's just a normal, good guy, just reminds me of how damned good he is. And, of course, how woeful I am going to be trying to sit through OotP. Weirdly enough, I'm not really looking forward to GoF with any all-consuming passion, the way I was about PoA. But even though I didn't love OotP as a book as much as PoA or even GoF, I really think that it has tremendous potential as a film, if they don't screw it up.
And, o la, only there was a sequal to Batman which also incorporated Smallville and an Evil Lex because it's so clear to me now that Bruce is Clark's Replacement!Lex.
Seriously, I think that Christian merits consideration for Best Actor - why is it that every year, there's another film which takes comic book mythos and makes it more than what we are seemingly supposed to consider "just a comic book film." This year, it's BB. Last year, Spiderman 2. The year before that, X-Men 2.
Hopefully, next summer, it'll continue with X-Men 3, which is being directed by my high school-mate Brett Ratner, who is thankfully a bit of a comic book geek, and should give it the right feeling. I'm not a huge fan of Brett's Rush Hour or Bad Boys work, but I think this just might work well. Plus, he's a really nice guy, so I like it when he does well...

Date: 2005-06-17 07:27 pm (UTC)Cillian Murphy - wasn't he just creepy and great?
Your Six Degrees of Tom Cruise made my head fall off.
I think I agree with your assessment. I need to see the movie again, because I spent my first viewing explaining to my eager son what the heck was going on, but you've tagged the things that still managed to stand out for me: how perfect the actors were, and how the movie seemed much more than a comic book movie. To me the movie seemed to do what myths used to do for us: show us what the world really looks like through imagery and allegory and dream. Pretty cool.

Date: 2005-06-18 02:14 am (UTC)I'm also looking forward to seeing this cast (sans Holmes) play off each other. I could honestly give a flip about Katie Holmes. I personally don't think she has enough talent to deserve screen time with these people. Course part of my issue with her is that I can't watch the news without seeing her all over it. She doesn't deserve time on my tv just because she scrawging Tom bloody Cruise. If he's not doing another movie as Lestat, I don't care if he falls off the planet.
wow...I rambled on a bit there. I'll go now..
