In a gesture of semi-perverse hope, BestBuy's Geek Squad has created a template for absentee excuse notes for work and school for use on/regarding May 19, 2005.
I sent that off to several friends.. tho I think they've already managed to use vacation time for it.
I feel like I'm getting excited by proxy to them.. I like the original trilogy, but have been fairly let down by the episode 1 and 2. The trailer for 3 looks kickass, but not enough for me to camp out. :)
I've never had a full day off for a movie, but we had more than one office-sanctioned (and PAID-FOR) trip to the movies -- I think we paid for The Matrix: Revolutions and HP ourselves, but the Lord of the Rings office treks down to the Cinerama were paid for by our department bosses. And then I got to see PotC and The Incredibles on the company tab, too. It was, on occasion, a very good place to work. ;)
(In the old days, we actually had our all-company meetings at the movie theater down the hill. We'd have the meeting, then watch a movie. I missed the Shakespeare in Love meeting because I was still an intern, but went for Austin Powers....)
When I interviewed for this job, I included writing samples - one of which was a press release I'd created for a Star Trek club. Jeff read it through from beginning to end then started talking about trek. Turned out that the week before he started working here there was a TNG marathon on some cable channel. He spent the entire week glued to the tube. *g*
We talked at least five minutes about trek. I found out later from the agency that sent me there that mine was the longest interview they'd arranged. I wouldn't be surprised if having trek in common was the determining factor for me getting the job.
The great thing about my boss...she's a HUGE Star Wars geek and has already told me she doesn't expect to see me in early on the 19th.
I told her "Seeing that we're both going to the same theater at midnight for the movie, yeah, it would be hard for me to call in with 'I've got a really sore throat this morning. I'll be late.'"
AAAAND same with Harry Potter. A great boss is one that shares your obsessions.
Does this memo work for those who goto the midnight show and then sit in IHOP all night with their equally geeky friends discussing what-went-wrong/how-cool-it-was/I-can't-believe-there'll-never-be-another-SW-Movie-and-I'm-soooooo-depressed type of thoughts?
