Drive-by sidekicking
Feb. 23rd, 2005 08:37 amNo desktop/laptop computer access for me thru thursday, sigh. YM is still wiggy but I'm on AIM at travelingheidi a bit.
Interesting article on The Clash, London Calling, Train In Vain, the Beatles, the Stones and class stratification in the UK. I'm especially interested in the take on the class issue by Brits...

I am wary of journalists that canonise one band and in the same breath condemn a not that dissimilar one. The journalist makes two fairly valid points - the British class system has become much more rigid since 1979 and Jones/Strummer came from different social classes - just like McCartney/Lennon.
And then he proceeds to eulogise rock 'n' roll on the basis of that. It's a bit hasty, to be honest. The gentle downfall of rock from its "rock rules the world" monopoly has many reasons - one of them being the rise of rap, hip-hop and electronic music - and I suspect that none of them have anything to do with this writer insinuations that only duos of middle-class/working class boys are capable of writing good rock songs.
Just IMO.

Date: 2005-02-24 06:03 pm (UTC)Hello, (sorry to contact you here, but wasn't sure of other forms)
I am part of The Crunch newspaper, which is run by a group of Altrincham Girls grammar school pupils (England). I was wondering, would you possibly have time to answer so question for a 60 second interview regarding you and Fictionalley. If you (or I) have more time, perhaps I could write an in depth feature on the site, as I know that a lot of our girls enjoy it very much.
This current issue of the paper will be entered for a national newspaper competition, www.newsday.co.uk, if that is of any importance what so ever...
Yours, Esma (Coffee at Fictionally)
