Jan. 16th, 2005 09:47 amSO many thanks for
inthesewalls for working with a dozen other FAPers to compile the List of Oft-Recommended Fics, Post-OOTP Edition, which you can now find at FA Park's Help! I'm Looking For... forum. It was, he says, a birthday present for me, and I am thrilled to have it as it's a great resource! And because he says it'll be updated again before the release of Book Six. Again, wheeee.
Also, I know I'm late to the party, but I had to rec an advertisement for Harry Potter by
hesychasm. Whatever any of us thought of the plotting or the ending of OotP, she's right - this is intense, rich, multilayered source material, and it is worth enjoying. On the flip side, I was very amused by
violet_quill's Good Omens-ish take on the LJ downtime situation. As I've been rereading Good Omens this week (I got a new reading copy as my old one was a US first edition which Teh Neil signed back in Sept. 03), it was a special thrill to giggle at it this AM.
Lastly, for the morning, crossposted from what I just did on TLC:
So, which of you did searches for Harry Potter Fanfic on Yahoo yesterday? And can we find out if Google's numbers spiked, too?

Lastly, for the morning, crossposted from what I just did on TLC:
Yahoo's BUZZ reported yesterday that Harry Potter fanfic regularly pops up into the top searches list on Yahoo, but on January 14, it spiked 147% (this editor wonders if that was because of LiveJournal being down for much of Friday and Saturday).

Date: 2005-01-16 06:05 pm (UTC)I agree and the breakdown of LJ kinda proves the point. A lot of us were just lost without the fandom yesterday.
I think TLC should print that personally. I sent it to a friend of mine at WB and simply attached "JKR needs to see this".

Date: 2005-01-16 09:34 pm (UTC)And I know I might be over-reaching here, but if I were you, I wouldn't worry about your NC17 stuff on your LJ as long as it's behind cuts from the front page. JKR's lawyers' position on NC17 stuff has been that it needs to be unGoogleable, and it should be password protected, but in over three years of rampant LJ use for posting NC17 content, they haven't complained once yet, and if they were reading anything, it would be the Daily Snitch, IMHO (and that's just my speculation and not based on anything I've ever actually been told by anyone at WB).
A few years ago, a guy - let's cal lhim Jay - sent Sugarquill a threat that if they didn't start lying about the husband of an author who'd been hosted on their site (in other words, stop telling the truth about him), he'd report them to WB for hosting fanfic & fanart. Back when this happened, I was so nervous about it - what would his reporting do to the fandom? But as it turned out, there were no ramifications - and we're at the point now where there never will be for anything R-rated or less, which is a relief, as a fandom, and a sensation that I think Buffy fans and Star Trek fans haven't really been able to enjoy. We're lucky. But I definitely respect the concern of those who write NC17 fics and create NC17 art - although again, I think we're lucky that for TPTB, as long as people are sensible, it's not a danger zone. Posting NC17 fics on the boards on harrypotter.com? Well, yeah - but anyone who does that with their own fics, IMHO, deserves what they get. Call it another expression of the Darwin Awards.
