It's quiet here now, but the line is amazingly long.

When I arrived, along with another lawyer from the campaign, they wouldn't let us in - some issue about them not having our names on the lst that had been submitted two weeks ago - and the clerk threatened to call the police if I was upset. Not a nice or sane thing to say to pregnant!woman. She also threatened to have us removed if we spoke to the people in line. Two voters waiting in line whipped out their cellphones to call the cops to have us arrested, as well, which was very scary. Finally, at about 710, 45 minutes after I'd arrived, the clerk came back and said we could go in - she'd gotten our names confirmed with someone who had a clue at the supervisor's office. The first person she'd spoken to was an idiot.

So now I'm inside with my cashews & water bottle, and I don't think I'm going to end the day in jail. The line is long but people are patient and the room itself is a nice temperature.

Wishing you all the best of the day - good weather, no harrassment and an easy experience.

More later if anything is interesting.

Okay. Where are you, and WHY would two other people try to have you arrested? Sounds to me like pure stupidity. Hope things go better. *hugs*

Wow. One of the points I keep seeing again and again on my friends list is "don't be intimidated: go vote". It had never occurred to me that the simple act of going to vote - something I've done in two separate countries without any fuss or hassle whatsoever - could be so potentially threatening. I understand it's a serious business, but arrest you!?

Well, I'm not voting. I'm working as a poll attorney - I voted last week. But the presence of a poll attorney was threateneing to these poeple and they said it upset them that I offered to help anyone who was at the wrong polling place.

Okay, the only reason it should be upsetting that you offered to help people who were in the wrong place would be if saidpeople didn't want them to vote. Urgh. Best of luck down there. I'm about to go vote here soon in about 30 minutes myself.

People are *way* too paranoid if they want to have an obviously pregnant woman arrested. I'm glad everything settled down and you're okay.

That's gotta be scary.

btw, if it's a boy are you going to name him "John John" or "Kerry Edward" after our new pres and veep?

D'oh! :::smacks self for forgetting:::

Okay - so Kerry Edward or Edward Kerry if it's a boy?

And Teresa Elizabeth or Elizabeth Teresa if it's a girl!

(Actually, Kerry would work for a boy or a girl..... Kerry Edith?)

colour me uninformed, but what else do you do as a poll attorney?

I'm bummed & I am mad at myself for not changing my registration in time to prevent purging from my old poll place...and then I couldn't sign up to be a poll worker/volunteer b/c I'm not registered!! geez, I've worked polls since I was 18!

I would do "unofficial" volunteering, but it seems I can't walk two feet without getting exposed to the early flu, and my flu shot didn't take effect quick enough, so I've been home in bed (well, up at the computer for short bits), for three days now.

holy run-on sentence batgirl!!

hope for an uneventful day for you and a decisive victory for us all tonite :D

It's a beautiful day here in DC, and even though our votes count for precisely DICK?

THere were 200+ people in line before me. One and a half hours spent with people wanting to do their civic duty, representation or no.

I love this country.

....yeah, but you couldn't have KNOWN that before last night, when I finally sucked it up and said that if I didn't vote for the Dem. ticket just because of ONE issue, I'd be as bad as all the other one-issue voters.

Satan himself could be the Democratic nominee and he'd get our electoral votes.

GEORGE W. BUSH could be the Democratic nominee and he'd get our electoral votes.

DC is something like 88% registered Democrats.

It's just assumed that the 3 electoral votes we have will only and always go to the DNC nominee. No matter who that is.

Don't blame me, I voted for Kodos.

For an optimistic look on things, a tidbit that I'm sure you've heard, but I'll pass along, as I thought of you when I heard it.

Since at least the 1930s, if the Washington Redskins lose their game the Sunday before a Presidential election, the incumbant also loses the Presidency. The 'Skins lost on Sunday, so it looks as though Bush's time is up...

I was in Wisconsin stumping for Kerry on Sunday. We had firm orders *not* to knock on doors during the Packers/Redskins game. *g*

They didn't want to lose a single vote from people getting annoyed by being interrupted.

There was much rejoicing when the Redskins lost!

Kerry in a landslide!

Heidi,

That all sounds like rather an unpleasant experience to me - and so different to the very lethargic response which is all I've ever got.

But I've never lived in a marginal constituency which could change history. I've never had to queue, and I've never had to vote in the election that the BBC today said was *the* most important election for decades (I think they said 1960).

I hope it all goes well today and there is no more intimidation.

Good Luck!

I cannot believe people can be so anal! Those people in line calling the police--really! People need to calm down and chill out.
