That is some scary shit. However, the FBI/Secret Service investigates everything like that reported to them. In other words, it's not just the Bushies. Just, with the Bushies, you never know since they don't take to kindly to those civil liber-whatchamacallits.

Actually, what I find most scary about this whole situation is that someone went and reported it to the FBI. Shades of 1984...

I just can't believe that someone would rat her out like that. I mean.. you don't mess around with people like the Secret Service... I mean.. anybody with the power and the authority like that just scares the effing crap out of me. I've heard snippets of stories of what they do in the army from my boyfriend. It's not pretty. Of course, that's what war is all about, but jeesus... still scares me.

Yeah, that's what got to me, too. The FBI is very good at their job, and does go and investigate everything. But reporting that brings back shades of McCarthyism that frighten me.

And the no-fly list is new under the bush administration, which is an additional impact of such an investigation.

...and that does indeed make the situation a hell of a lot more scary.

I have a feeling Bush is going to be gone come next week. I think the polls are seriously underestimating the sheer number of new voters and young voters voting in this election.

It should never be taboo to speak out regardless of who you support. There are people on both sides have taken things too far. It's one thing to argue, it's another to blantanly ruin someone's life because they don't support your political views. It's wrong.

That person needs to seriously get a life and learn to recognize political satire. (This is Alyeska by the way)

My husband (back before he was my husband and after he was out of the military) was jokingly discussing the lack of security at a military base he was once stationed on and it somehow got reported and the FBI had little chats with us. Of course, this was before the whole Homeland Security thing but it was still rather frightening that a benign conversation with the wrong person led to that and that was during the Clinton administration. I suppose it's going to be worse now.

I just read that post -- I can't believe it! Someone can be just joking around, say the "wrong thing" in jest, and end up with an FBI file and on the no-fly list...and the worst part is that it was most likely someone on LJ that reported it.

shades of 1984 indeed!
