A state senate candidate in Hawaii supports the execution of gays. Actually, let me rephrase that. He actually only said that he supports the execution of people who have been convicted of engaging in homosexual activity. Well, there a difference for you.

No, I am not implying that all Republicans think that the execution is a fitting punishment for engaging in homosexual activity. But this one guy believes that, and it makes me wonder whether there are other people in this country who agree with him, and if so, how can I make sure that none of them ever get into positions of power?

The candidate doesn't believe in gay people, just people who commit gay acts.

There is a fair sized lunatic fringe who favor the Cure/Quarentine/Kill solution to the Gay Problem. They'd prefer the first, which leaves them as employed tax payers.

And who knows how many are already in some level of power? I assume the 90% of people who are straight are at best indifferent, at worst actively supporting these folks.

Yup, it means not only would Teh Gays get the axe, so would anyone who had an "experimentation" in college.

Well, at least he's not for the execution of people who think about gay sex and masturbate at the same time.

Holy fuck.

Well, Hawai is solidly Democrat, so there's little chance the guy will be elected (and I shudder at the notion that I am writing this...)

And in what universe???

The nonreality based one, I guess. Or the one where SW Ep 1 was a nuanced character exploration?

Don't know if you guys are "friends", but your posts were following each other on my flist. [livejournal.com profile] calliope14 just posted about how single, pregnant women should NOT be teachers (er, that's not her thoughts, but someone elses) There's a link to the article on her lj.

A little too much of a coincidence for my comfort!

Oddly enough I found that tidbit from the article Heidi posted here. The phrase 'DeMint's gay and single mother teachers' made me go wtf? so I googled it, and lo and behond, there it was. How I missed that I don't know - I guess because I don't watch TV and half the time don't have time for the newspaper. :)

Of course, people who believe in tripe like this aren't the only problem. The more prevalent problem is candidates and politicians who feel it necessary to pander to people who believe things like this in order to get their votes. If there's one thing worse than a person who believes in nutty or dangerous things it's someone whose "beliefs" are up for sale to the highest bidder, and anything goes if it gets them into office.

Well, the president came out as supporting civil unions, so one can assume that he wouldn't be supporting the current Ohio amendment on the ballot.

You're right, this goes far beyond what Bush says.

We have civil unions in France - partners have all the economic rights, including inheritance, tax, civil service perks like transfer of "spouse" to the area where the other is posted, etc. that married people have. It does very well here, especially as marriage numbers altogether are going down.

Have you seen the fracas today as the Europarliament prepares to refuse to ratify the new Commission since the proposed new Justice coimmissioner called homosexuality a sin? That's the most fun I've seen out of Brussels in years.

Yeah, I was going to say before I made sure to reread your post that I saw a news report a couple of months ago about civil unions in France and how they were becoming more populare among heterosexuals then marraige.

I'm saddened but not surprised that the Republicans would field a candidate like this. Just recently, Alan Keyes suggested that children of gay parents are more likely to commit incest than children of hetero parents. Whatever.

Hey hey hey, not all Republicans are like that. =D

But yes, I am soooooooo ashamed of my party right now. As [livejournal.com profile] psychic_serpent said, the Republican party (NOT, I emphasize, all Republicans) "feel[s] it necessary to pander to people who believe things like this in order to get their votes."

Sigh. And once upon a time we were the party of Lincoln.

Wow...that is unbelievably twisted...and terribly saddening that anyone could possibly believe that.

As for making sure none of them get into positions of power...um...we could all vote democrat? And campaign a lot? And unearth terrible, career-destroying scandals for anyone who does get that far? Really, I think people just have to make it clear that they won't stand for that sort of thing- politicians who are blatantly racist sometimes lose their jobs or are forced to resign; we just need to hold up the same standards for sexism and homophobia.

Having just had my 10-year HS reunion, and coming from a place where a) most folks never move beyond a 15 mile radius and b) they only hear about homosexuals from the KKK, I can assure you that this guy is not the exception to the rule.

You know Republicans love to cater to fear and ignorance, and they're never going to stop hatemongering as long as they can keep people ignorant and scared of gay people.

In the recent Australian election, a candidate apparently said that lesbians should be burned at the stake. (No comment was made in relation to gay men or bisexuals. Just lesbians...) The individual's party distanced themselves from the comment, but the party still got a disturbing number of votes, and a senate seat or two.

What about?

"Coburn is going to be taking his message to the state. ... Tom Coburn is the only consistent conservative in the race. Brad Carson is just too liberal for Oklahoma," Coburn spokesman John Hart said.

There is one candidate in Oklahoma who believes:

1) Supports the 2nd Amendment
2) Wants to make Bush's Tax Cuts Permanent

and that's the Democrat....

Coburn wants to sign legislation to make providing abortions a Capital offense...

Glad my Dad left Okiehoma as a kid....
