They showed a clip of dick cheney on meet the press in 2003 saying that success in iraq would incorporate striking a blow against the heart of those who attacked on 9/11.

So I guess that bit where Cheney said he never linked 9/11 and Iraq was a lie?

Updated with a bit from Newsweek:

There’s just one problem with confident delivery and correcting your opponent: you’d better get your own facts straight. Cheney castigated Edwards for saying there was no connection between the 9/11 attacks and Iraq. "The senator has got his facts wrong," Cheney declared. "I have not suggested there's a connection between Iraq and 9/11." That would be fine if Cheney hadn’t appeared on "Meet the Press" a year ago to describe that very connection. The war, he said, was "a major blow right at the heart of the base, if you will, the geographic base of the terrorists who have had us under assault now for many years, but most especially on 9/11." Cheney also lambasted Edwards for failing to show up at the Senate, saying: "The first time I ever met you was when you walked on the stage tonight." One small problem for vice presidents is the ready availability of transcripts and news reports. Those awkward pieces of information prove the two men met in and out of the Senate, not least when Edwards escorted the new senator for North Carolina, Elizabeth Dole, as she was sworn in by Cheney just last year.

Emphasis mine. As soon as the debate was over, I pointed out to my husband that this was going to be won or lost on the factchecking, and, as I said elsewhere here, I don't necessarily mean at FactCheck.com.

:-(

I am disappointed with the debate. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either.

It makes me mad that the layout was able to make Cheney's inability to lock eyes with anyone into looking thoughtful, instead of evil. Edwards would have done better if they had been standing. He was barreling along there for a while, but ran out of steam at the end. I'd call it a draw, not because I agree with Cheney, but in terms of delivery and such.

I hope Edwards is better tomorrow. I did get special tickets at YD tonight to stand up front, so that is a plus. Something to look forward to, at least.

I dunno, I just expected something different from what we got. Maybe there was too much hype. Either way, I feel empty now . . .

I'll quit spamming, I promise!

And to actually answer your comment, I agree. The Bush administration has no clue what the truth is on who attacked who. It's really getting on my nerves :-(

I truly wish someone would confront him with that clip.

And you were saying, Mr. Vice President?

"We have removed an ally of al-Qaida"
- G.W.B. Mission Accomplished Speech

"We never had enough troops on the ground"
- Paul Bremer October 5, 2004

"This campaign is a baseless and malevolent concoction of the Democrat party," said House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, a Texas Republican. "It has one purpose -- to spread fear."
- Tom DeLay speaking about House Bill proposing a draft... October 5, 2004 (funniest thing I've ever heard).

"The senator has got his facts wrong. I have not suggested there's a connection between Iraq and 9/11, but there's clearly an established Iraqi track record with terror."
- Dick Cheney, October 5, 2004 - debate w/ Edwards

Now, is there a connection between the Iraqi government and the original World Trade Center bombing in ’93? We know, as I say, that one of the perpetrators of that act did, in fact, receive support from the Iraqi government after the fact. With respect to 9/11, of course, we’ve had the story that’s been public out there. The Czechs alleged that Mohamed Atta, the lead attacker, met in Prague with a senior Iraqi intelligence official five months before the attack, but we’ve never been able to develop anymore of that yet either in terms of confirming it or discrediting it. We just don’t know." (Huh?)
- Dick Cheney, September 14, 2003

"We will be greeted as liberators"
- Dick Cheney, Pre-Iraq War

Bush received a classified National Intelligence Estimate in late July which "spells out a dark assessment of prospects for Iraq." The three possibilities outlined in the estimate paint a grim picture for Iraq through the end of 2005, 'with the worst case being developments that could lead to civil war, the officials said.

Finally, I haven't heard a lot of info about the firing of Carl Cameron for his mistakes on Fox News not the producer who took the 'Communists for Kerry' (a pro-Bush group) seriously??? Wonder what happened to the liberal bias in the media? :-)

Amazed!

Online Polls...see how these numbers change but...

Who won the debate?

FoxNews.com

Edwards: 52%
Cheney: 47%

MSNBC

Edwards: 68%
Cheney: 32%

Cheney just isn't likable... :-)

Oh and this: (they learn nothing...)

Oct. 5 - President Bush today distanced himself from his administration’s quiet effort to push through a law that would make it easier to send captured terror suspects to countries where torture is used. The proposed law, recently tacked onto a much larger bill despite the fallout from last spring’s interrogation scandal, is seen as an attempt to counter a recent Supreme Court decision that would free some terror detainees being held without trial.

Websites like the Democratic Underground asked its readers to vote in online polls. (http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=974046&mesg_id=974046)

I'd wait until Gallup, Zogby, and so on do some offline polling.

That's where my "see how these numbers change" came from :-)

It seems unlikely that Fox News viewers could imagine Edwards winning the debate. Just wouldn't fit into their view of the world. :)

My only question: Who's running for President???

It's not very unlikely when the Underground readership comes out en masse to rack up the polls. Even AOL's polls were targeted, which kind of surprises me.

Hey, I wish Cheney were president instead of Bush. Suffice to say, I think Cheney passes the "one heartbeat away" test with flying colors.

I don't know...he still didn't answer why he was mistaken about how the War in Iraq would go nor his investments with Halliburton. I think he is an excellent politician, but I'm not sure that he is someone who I would choose to represent me. He is just not likable.
